The Niagara Movement was a civil rights group organized by W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter in 1905. After being denied admittance to hotels in Buffalo, New York, the group of twenty-nine business owners, teachers, and clergy who comprised the initial meeting gathered at Niagara Falls, Ontario (Canada) from which the group’s name derives.

The principles behind the Niagara Movement were largely in opposition to Booker T. Washington’s philosophy of Accommodationism. Trotter, editor of the Boston Guardian, had publicly reprimanded Washington at a Boston, Massachusetts meeting in 1903. In The Souls of Black Folk (1903), Du Bois had also condemned Washington for his lowered expectations for African Americans. The Niagara Movement drafted a “Declaration of Principles,” part of which stated: “We refuse to allow the impression to remain that the Negro-American assents to inferiority, is submissive under oppression and apologetic before insults.”

The Niagara Movement attempted to bring about legal change, addressing the issues of crime, economics, religion, health, and education. The movement stood apart from other black organizations at the time because of its powerful, unequivocal demand for equal rights. The Niagara Movement forcefully demanded equal economic and educational opportunity as well as the vote for black men and women. Members of the Niagara Movement sent a powerful message to the entire country through their condemnation of racial discrimination and their call for an end to segregation.

While the movement had grown to include to 170 members in 34 states by 1906, it also encountered difficulties. W.E.B. Du Bois supported the inclusion of women in the Niagara Movement, William Monroe Trotter did not. Trotter left the movement in 1908 to start his own group, the Negro-American Political League.

The Niagara Movement met annually until 1908. In that year a major race riot broke out in Springfield, Illinois. Eight blacks were killed and over 2,000 African Americans fled the city. Symbolically important because it was the first northern race riot in four decades and because it was in the hometown of Abraham Lincoln, black and white activists, including members of the Niagara Movement, felt a new more powerful, interracial organization was now needed to combat racism. Out of this concern, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was formed. The Niagara Movement was considered the precursor to the NAACP and many of its members, such as W.E.B. Du Bois, were among the new organization’s founders.

Comments of a french documentary about the DPRK in the Kim Jong Ill era.

When you're having a bad time in life simply watch this kind of documentary to make yourself remember how good of a life you have still compared to this.

Masses, Elites, and Rebels being proven more right and correct every waking day.

The first swim in a lake this summer. Took me a long ass time to get out of my winter fur this year as it's been so chilly, but today it definitely wasn't so we went for an evening swim.

It's just so nice and relaxing. wholesome

If at any point you, or your comrades, feel compelled to write a manifesto on cancel culture = bad, i have some advice for you

  • 1 do not
  • 2 reconsider who you spend your time with
  • 3 touch grass

/ rant

If anything cancel culture doesnt exist or ineffective overall, like Chris Brown is still making packed numbers, Ronaldo is still one of the most popular athlete of all time, Diddy has fans pouring out baby oil outside of the courtroom to celebrate his acquittal. The entire UK government exists now to appease JK Rowling. Most "cancelled" people I guess is Notch but even then he lives in a fucking mansion infinite free time to play every video game in the earth, meanwhile non-cancelled young people just have to accept they will not ever get a stable job unless they are willing to become a slave/"intern" I guess.

I've always said this whenever people start talking about cancel culture. The only people who ever seem to "fall" to cancel culture are people that were never really that popular to begin with. Its why I fucking hate hearing about "people are trying to cancel such and such major celebrity" especially if its coming out of the mouth of said celebrity. No, you aren't being cancelled. I still see your fucking face all over the place.

I do feel like the other side of this is that forgiveness is not really something westerners do, especially in social media spaces. Even if it's something small compared to bigotry, people are quick to banish people forever. I dont think either side are often mature enough to discuss this.

Exclusive offer for Hexbear users. Invest in my startup:

Our b2c product will use AI and Big Data to precisely answer the question, "Who farted?".

Our patented new technology uses microphones that are always listening for flatulence. We use audio fingerprinting to identify the offending person, and a speaker announces their name. You will no longer need to have smelt it to know who dealt it!

On our roadmap we expect in Q3 to develop scent fingerprinting for those pesky "silent but deadly" farts.

Get in on the ground floor of my new tech company today and never be blamed for someone else's stinker!

I was listening to NPR in the car, and they had a pro Mamdani Democrat strategist on, and he was responding to an accusation that Mamdani’s policies are “college dorm politics”, and he said something like, “I don’t think they’re college dorm policies, when x% of people can’t afford to live, etc etc… it’s the material cond… material reality”. Dude almost said the thing. Made me laugh.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

he's lucky he didn't finish that word, they'd have banned him from the network.

Watching people who thought contrapoints was ever anything but a disgusting liberal figure that shit out in real time is a bit amusing ngl

I can understand not participating in queer discourse and therefore not knowing about the enbyphobia or who Buck Angel is but the collabs with Clinton wasn't a hint to people?

I've been a bum for the past couple weeks and haven't been riding my bike. Got back on the horse today and worked up a good sweat. Also found the time to clean my rims and scrub them with emery paper. My breaks went from sounding like a neglected public transit bus to silence.

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Okay fine, I'll ride my poor neglected bike

The combat system in Stellaris is so ass. The post-battle screen gives you hundreds of numbers but none of them are useful. I have 500 hours in the game and I understand all of its systems but I don't for the life of me understand the Ship Designer and what is effective against what. It's completely random as far as I'm concerned.

[–] makotech222@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm entirely reliant on the calculated military score/value on determining if my fleet will win against another. I've never designed a ship once lol.

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

Unfortunately completely unreliable.

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago

I admittedly only played a couple of dozen hours but I assumed the different ship classes did a sort of complicated rock paper scissors thing…? That’s how it works in ck2 sorta (which i have played much more of)

I have a petulant and childish animosity towards using any of the little nicknames the university has given things. Same for any municipal building. If it's on a sign it's no longer cute.

Master schemer characters are fun and all, but petty schemers are just so much better. If you need a successful schemer in your story, please make them very lucky instead of some mastermind.

Man I so hate the fact that I searched for a new place for three years, found one that was cheap and had seemingly chill roommates and now I just feel more sad and lonely than I ever felt at the old shitty place. Like sure the last place was shittier and more expensive and I kinda hated my roommates, but at least there I didn't want to hang out with them and I had a cat to cuddle with. Here is hurts that my roommates seemingly just aren't interested at all in doing stuff and I just feel like a total fucking loser for wanting to do stuff with them but I so don't feel like having to beg to hang out and feeling like everything gets initiated by me.
