In 1950s americans were teaching Germany how to be anti-fascist and pro democracy... 75 years later they are a fascist country themselves, did a whole 180 degree turn around basically almost completely siding with Putin ideologies and are angry at the world for not understanding and for being surprised lmao ... Welp

And it’s not just that it’s awful. Fascism is awful everywhere.

It’s that it’s just so goddamn tacky.

Dr. Phil should stay in Texas with the other racists.

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Just remember, this guy could win an election the next time.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Is that… a thing? Like is he shooting for the presidency?

I apologize, I got my shitty tv "doctors" mixed up. I was thinking of Dr. Oz who ran in PA but lost.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah well “Dr” Oz is running Medicare and Medicaid now.

We let them win even when they lose.

Fascism is also tacky

Fuck that, they'll have to kill me before I leave my home.

Waco or bust baby!

Or do the world a favor after living in comfort at their expense for decades, grow a pair, and fight.

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I see this sentiment posted a lot on here, and while I don't disagree with the position, I'm not sure I understand what exactly is meant. When you say Americans should "grow a pair and fight", what are you envisioning? Should I drive to my state capital and shoot the governor in the head?

Not everyone is capable of organizing. Not everyone is capable of violence. And humans will always prioritize themselves and their loved ones over strangers. Migration is often seen as the only way to have a future at all.

Of course, when you live under an oppressive extractive hegemon you at least want to live where the resources are flowing to rather than from.

That doesn't have to mean you live in the imperial core, the periphery might be tolerable, but not the bad lands nor the borderlands.

Organized resistance overcoming more powerful enemies. You know, that thing the US always claims they're known for. Although I suppose an honest look at the past would reveal that America has always been slow (putting it lightly) to organize on the right side of history.

I'm not suggesting violence, necessarily, but I think America's protests have been relatively toothless and misguided compared to their ancestors. During the first guilded age people protested outside John D. Rockefeller's house for months._ Can you imagine people protesting outside of Musk's, Bezos's, Zuck's, or Gate's houses?

The Montgomery Bus boycott lasted an entire year. Headed by people that had no other means of transportation. Can you imagine people depriving themselves of an essential service, like, say, the internet, for an entire year?

I just don't know that people are prepared to do what, historically speaking, it takes to get better living conditions. Not violence, but the patience and persistence it take to truly change society.

I'm even here writing this long comment instead of doing something in real life.

How did they even survive?

Without the internet I could not work, not keep a roof over my head, not eat, no shower, no electricity. I would physically die in the winter.

[–] Buske@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This is filming is the beginning of that show they mentioned a few months ago where people win citizenship. We are fucked.

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (4 children)

Win? Like a fucking gameshow? That's absolutely fucked.

Edit:

For anyone that happens to find this comment, the reality show was pitched to DHS. There's no evidence it went past the point of someone going "Hey DHS I have this horrible idea I want to make money off of". It's kind of like getting a spam call about your car's extended warranty and then CNN reporting "Wizardbeard making plans to extend car warranty". You can find this in the CNN report linked below about it.

Separately, Dr. Phil has been traveling with ICE, officially to get first hand experience for reporting on the situation for the right wing "news" channel he's part of now.

These could be related, but there's no evidence so far that they actually are. ICE and DHS are so distressingly awful that we don't need to speculate and stretch to find extra things to be disgusted about.

Imagine hunger games where failure is "an helicopter ride"

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

It's fucking awful. It's unconscionable.

like a

Not like a game show; no.

Trump treats citizenship as a commodity. He's literally selling it to rich white south Africans.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago

He treats everything like a commodity.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 2 points 2 days ago

I’m equally confused.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I decided in 2021 that if the election went to shit, I was moving to New Zealand. I even took a phone interview with a possible employer in Aukland. However, between 2021 and now, I ended up in a relationship with a refugee. She can't move with me or she loses her protected status.

After the election happened, I spent a lot of time thinking carefully about what I would do. Ultimately, the risks (like getting tied to a shitty job with a bad boss and not being able to switch because they were sponsoring my green card or whatever, plus being sad and lonely without a support network) outweighed the benefit (not being attached to the USA's shittier states). I remain stateside.

On the plus side, you could be refugees together pretty soon! Wouldn't that be cool?

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Here's hoping for you, me, and everybody else to stay safe out here.
