The Poor People's Campaign was a march on Washington D.C. to gain economic justice for poor people in the United States that began on this day in 1968, just one month after the assassination of one of its key organizers, MLK Jr.

The protest was also organized by Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and carried out under the leadership of Ralph Abernathy in the wake of King's assassination.

After presenting an organized set of demands to Congress and executive agencies, participants set up a 3,000-person protest camp on the Washington Mall, where they stayed for six weeks in the spring of 1968.

Among those demands was a proposal for an "economic bill of rights" that included a commitment to full employment, a guaranteed annual income measure, and more low-income housing for poor Americans of all races.

"I think it is necessary for us to realize that we have moved from the era of civil rights to the era of human rights…

When we see that there must be a radical redistribution of economic and political power, then we see that for the last twelve years we have been in a reform movement…

That after Selma and the Voting Rights Bill, we moved into a new era, which must be an era of revolution…"

-MLK Jr., in a 1967 planning meeting

andor question, episode 3, minor spoilers

spoileri guess that petty bourgeois farmer guy did betray brasso? like, idk, brasso just kinda like comes at them and then gets caught, and then starts going all DON'T PRETEND YOU DIDN'T TELL THEM, BETRAYER at the farmer guy, and then later there's a short like, look and a nod between them? I guess like him being like "yeah i did" or something? because I thought it was like some signal to do something but then nothing was ever done

I'm finishing Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins. I don't know how to feel about the world. I've read enough to know about all of these things in bits and pieces. Listened to Blow Back. But I continue to feel likeAmerican collapse is the only deserved and moral outcome.

My most lent out to libs books I have are that, Shock Doctrine and Killing Hope.

can someone give me a quick rundown on the revcoms

what's their deal

[–] Bolshechick@hexbear.net 4 points 11 hours ago

Formerly Maoist, were a member of the RIM (Revolutionary Internationalist Movement), a now defunct Maoist international. For some reason they had a very large ideological influence in this org, despite the fact that most of the other parties were actually engaged in waging people's war (like the TKP-ML, the Shining Path, Indian Maoists, Nepalese Maoists, etc.), and the revcoms obviously weren't.

Then chairman Bob Avakian came up with "the New Synthesis", and they are now just a weird cult dedicated to him; apparently the greatest Marxist theorist ever.

I hear Sting got his name as a teenager because he wore a sweater with black and yellow stripes. But that's absolute bullshit. Nobody in Newcastle would have given him a cool nickname. They probably called him "The Twat in the Bumblebee Jumper" or some shit.

Plasma center went pretty good today, thought for sure I'd be there forever but make it pretty early in the morning and there weren't any lines. My blood flowed pretty well and didn't feel any unusual pain so I'm pretty happy. Last time I went it was an 2 almost 3 hours to be pricked, guess with the new plasma clinic and new hours they doing things have speed up. Thought some woke thoughts as my plasma left me so hopefully the persons who get it get my brainworms.

We talked about what we'd all do if we won the lottery at work. A lot of people just want leisure and never to work, a couple wanted to open a Cafe, another person just wanted to paint for the rest of her life. I actually would probably still be doing the same job, it'd be nice to not worry about money anymore though!

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

If I came upon wealth, I would probably spend the first year just thinking about what to do with my life and with the wealth. Hopefully I would be strong enough to use a portion of it for good deeds, but the wealth might just corrupt me and turn me into a bad person

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 3 points 16 hours ago

I mean, some stuff, I'd pay my debts, buy a house, and probably get facial feminization surgery. But like, thats my big ticket items.

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 4 points 17 hours ago

Interestingly we had a similar discussion yesterday. Couple guys were like "I'd be too bored i would have to work just so i don't drink all day" and man am i glad i was born in the era of videogames because if I didn't have to work i would never run out of shit to do and if i didn't feel like doing anything i could pay games for 12 hours a day for a week if i wanted who cares.

In construction i think they've really had that "work until you literally can't anymore" mentality drilled in there deep

I want to guess you’re in academia, but then I’d be surprised everyone else didn’t have the same reply.

People complaining about AOC not endorsing Zohran in NYC mayor race are about to find out what its like to elect a supposedly progressive mayor with a weird fucking history (Chicago's Brandon Johnson)

Not that I stan AOC, but dude is weird and probably gives off bad vibes like hes just gonna fuck everything up.

[–] Grownbravy@hexbear.net 7 points 15 hours ago

can do any worse than Adams

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 3 points 15 hours ago

Is he even polling all that well? The only candidate in the primary that I ever hear about is Cuomo. Maybe Lander once in a blue moon.

Big things happening in Babs Labs

This will be a 3lb camlifter-hammersaw, kind of like if you jammed the two bots of Endpoint into one unholy monstrosity.

It starts by driving into the opponent and getting them on its flat little forks sticking out front. The servo rotates, and the linkages cause the forks to rotate 90 degrees, hopefully high-centering the opponent so it can't drive away.

That's when I rev up the hammersaw, and slam it into to the top of my enemy.

I probably made it too complicated and fragile, but we'll see when I actually finish it several months from now.

Does anyone else feel Tʜᴇ Rᴏᴛ^™^ setting in?

‎I don't know what it is, but I can definitely feel it and have named it appropriately.
spoiler Feels a step or two beyond enshittification, and farther reaching. Maybe capitalism is just showing it's ass extra hard or something

Or my depression has improved enough that I can actually feel things again and everything is just very off compared to the last time I could feel.

[–] LocalOaf@hexbear.net 10 points 20 hours ago

Yeah idk, I've got The Dread™ bad

like the whole world is a car dangling off the edge of a bridge that's broken in half that's just slowly swaying back and forth teetering off the edge but it won't fall

[–] peppersky@hexbear.net 3 points 16 hours ago

Just finished Andor, there's going to be a season 3 right?

Should I watch Rogue One now(haven't seen it before) or wait till after Andor has finished completely? I assume it tells the fate of some characters and the outcome of the BoY although I do already have a vague idea of that

EDIT: apparently there's not going to be a S3 :( guess I'll watch R1

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 2 points 12 hours ago

Rogue 1 is gonna be a letdown. It's alright but it's less Andor more normal stsr wars

Everything about academia is fucked up. wdym you need to be currently attending a university to access JSTOR. Why can't people be trusted with the largest resource for all of human knowledge without currently going to school. I think all workers regardless of education should be able to go on JSTOR. Also I should be able to go on JSTOR after I leave this fucking place. Yeah I know this is all pirateable but it's less convenient. Also I should be able to get a print subscription to The American Historical Review just because I think it would be cool without it costing 600 fucking dollars a year
