Pope Palpatine was a meme day 1

“Everyone loves America right now, it’s the perfect time for an American pope!”

-The Vatican

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 5 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Because the Vatican should make its choices based on Secular politics and your fee fees instead of character.

It’s all made up fantasy and bullshit anyways, no need to get worked up over old men cosplaying, and it is actually based on secular politics and feelings, and money. that’s religion for ya.

[–] qjkxbmwvz@startrek.website 23 points 10 hours ago

Sounds like the opposite reasoning may have some truth:

"Cardinal George of Chicago, of happy memory, was one of my great mentors, and he said: 'Look, until America goes into political decline, there won't be an American pope.' And his point was, if America is kind of running the world politically, culturally, economically, they don't want America running the world religiously. So, I think there's some truth to that, that we're such a superpower and so dominant, they don't wanna give us, also, control over the church."

Perhaps they hope he can rein in American Catholics?

The church is on board with all the anti-abortion stuff, but the rest not so much

You know, if I had a nickel for every time a Pope looked like Palpatine, I'd have too nickels. It isn't much, but it's kinda strange that it happened twice.

Old man do be looking like old man.

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 21 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Benedict was more Emperor than Senator though.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago

His eggs were pretty lit though, ngl

[–] harmsy@lemmy.world 11 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

OMG I just realized I messed up too/two. I almost never do that. I should sleep more.

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

This isn’t Reddit. We understand what you were saying.

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 8 points 17 hours ago

Same dude though

[–] LavaPlanet@lemm.ee 8 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Different dimension, tho. In this timeline he's good.

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Oh yeah? Do you have videos of him using light side force powers?

[–] Brickhead92@lemmy.world 12 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

He only force chokes people with consent and who are into that

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

After all, the light side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be consensual

[–] beejboytyson@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I feel like Yoda NEEDS that to be true

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 19 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

We had the Palpatine Pope, now we get the Sheev Pope.

[–] raod_guitar@feddit.org 3 points 14 hours ago

And in between we had the high sparrow.

[–] ThisIsAManWhoKnowsHowToGling@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

You know, I really had fun in Rise of Skywalker purely because Palpatine returned. I didn't even mind the hand-wavey way he was brought back, because it meant Palpatine was about to Palpatine all over the place.

Yeah, that was my favorite part of the movie. I couldn't care less about the actual plot

[–] Mr_Fish@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago (1 children)
[–] random_character_a@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

Kinda.

Original plot was that a guy goes nuts and makes kebab out of kindergarten kids with his scifi insta-grill machete. It was a slasher movie.

Then the studio thought they went too far and forced them to make some political drama around it.

Then it was too boring, so studio ordered them to Tom Clancy it up, so they added some manly stuff.

After that the original slasher stuff didn't quite fit, so they just cut it off. Spielberg was allowed to keep his name in the movie anyway.

End result was a hodgepodge that didn't make sense. Just stuff glued together with shallow, non-believable character motivations.

I had the same color kippahs at my bar mitzvah.

[–] Kurious84@eviltoast.org 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

One of the few tolerable scenes.

I love Star Wars. My whole life. I couldn’t get through it.
