Karl Marx, born on this day in 1818, was a foundational political theorist and journalist associated with the philosophy of Marxism.

Among Marx's best-known texts are the "The Communist Manifesto" and the three-volume "Das Kapital", in which he set out to define and explain the behavior of the capitalist mode of production.

Marx's political and philosophical thought have had enormous influence on subsequent intellectual, economic and political history, and his name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a school of social theory.

Marx's critical theories about society, economics and politics - collectively understood as Marxism - hold that human societies develop through class conflict. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production, and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages.

Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx concluded that, like previous socio-economic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system known as socialism.

I've been trying to figure out the core belief of civility libs

My current guess is something like misanthropy or subconscious classism. I think they're scared of mass insurrection because they look down on the mass public. I feel like I often hear them voice sweeping negative opinions about human nature, like "people are stupid," "people are gullible," "people are greedy." My hunch is that this sentiment can be challenged and corrected, if their personality isn't too malignant and they don't have some innate need to feel better than other people.

The old guy in physio keeps asking me to come over to his beach house to watch the last samurai with him because his wife came over from England and is making sushi. I just met the guy but he really likes me for some reason. My gf really likes sushi and said it would be nice and I don’t want to disappoint her

Happy Mother's Day to all you motherhexers out there who observe it. It was a too lovely morning, sitting in the sun and I was watching a male bird feeding a young one on a tree branch. I like to think it was giving the mama bird the day off owl-wink

Just learned about operation CHASE (Cut Holes And Sink Em), US sank 3 ships with chemical weapons on them and more ships with conventional weapons as a way if disposing of them, not caring or knowing how that would effect the ecosystem

Other countries also did this and sometimes fishermen come in contact with the chemical weapons and die and some fish in areas where there were dumps have higher levels of arsenic πŸ‘

Disney must really be paying for a marketing blitz for their new marvel movie, because my twitter timeline is full of it.

I don't watch marvel movies, I don't much like them, I don't interact with posts about them. If I do, it's usually accounts I follow making fun of whatever the latest Marvel slop is. The recent Captain America movie they did, Deadpool & Wolverine, Doctor Strange, etc. I really only see posts mocking these films. When a marvel movie is (comparatively) well-received I really don't see much about it. I heard the latest Guardians of the Galaxy movie was well liked, I didn't see a single post about that film. The last time I can remember there being serious activity on my TL is either when everyone was making fun of the Scarlet Witch show or when everyone was making fun of Eternals.

But this new Thunderbolts movie, I swear every other post is about it. Not from accounts I follow, either. Not making fun of the movie, but excitedly buying into its marketing gimmicks. Every post is Taskermaster this, New Avengers that, Florence Pugh is slayying in this one queen. I hate it. I'm not interacting with this posts, I demand they go away.

One more sign I should stop using social media, but do I ever learn?

I never watched "Ahh real monsters" as a child because it was 2 spooky 4 me. I have just learned the art and the direction of the show was from soviet artists after the situation and that is why it hit so much harder than the slop I was used to.

I was never a huge fan of Coke, Fanta or McDonald's, but since I started boycotting them I have realized how much I don't like them. I don't miss them at all, and I don't know what keeps drawing people back to that crap

Hoping to do a 100 mile bike ride this year. I think I can legitimately reach my goal by Fall, even if currently I can do maybe 15-20 miles on bike and a 2 mile run in a day.

Always wanted to do this trail, but back when I was biking 30 miles a day for school/work, I didn't exactly have the ability to take a 4-day weekend so casually.

I don't mind grafitti but I really wish they would do something besides writing their tags 90 times.

Edit: Grafitti is art. And it can therefore be critiqued as bad art.

I know that it's slop-brained but I want to see a superhero story with actual realism for once. Superpowers exist for reasons xyz, it ultimately doesn't matter I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for the magic bullshit. How did powers come into being? What effects did it have on the development of society if nuclear level threats are something humanity has had to deal with for potentially hundreds of years? How is damage from kaijus dealt with? I want to see the ways society would fundamentally alter if this shit actually happened and it was actually taken seriously. Fuck it, take different countries and see how different reactions and actions shape how their society handles it. I'm sure stories like it exist but they always end up full of brainworms or they just never take thoughts to any actual conclusions and I want the writer to be cool for once

I have a little old baby truck for supposedly making my life easier with projects, but I went like 7 months without starting it and driving it around (a long story), so the less than 1 year old battery died. like full drain. I spent the entire morning looking up the various hardware I can buy/use to remedy this specific situation (multi stage charger, 10A) as well as prevent it in the future (2-3A maintainer).

my current place doesn't have a garage or a car port or even a goddamn outlet on the porch, so I guess I'm charging this thing inside the house now that I've pulled the battery out. if I keep the windows open, that's well ventilated right?

this is so America car brained, but one day I just want to have a really simple shed that has like 3 bays worth of space, all my tools neatly organized, power outlets, wifi, a little dumpy computer I can easily watch videos on, and all the bullshit so I can just mostly fix my own dumbass problems without turning my living space into a chaos dungeon.

Is anyone else familiar with the experience of having people around you who love to hear you talk but don't actually give a shit about what you're saying?

It's the most infantilising thing. They'll go through the active listening motions but I can tell from their tone that they've checked out. Why the fuck did you ask me about the book I'm reading, or ask me for my take on world events, if you're just going to mhmm your way through the conversation and start folding laundry or whatever? Sometimes I just trail off midsentence and they don't even notice - they just respond with an, "...interesting!" a second later.

I put a lot of work into a tech political project recently, and in the early stages I had scraped a pile of politician's speeches in order to do some word analysis. I described it to a political friend who also works in tech and was met with, "I don't really get the point but it's really cool to see you so excited about something!"

Sometimes I find talking to strangers so much more validating because they have nothing to respond to except what I say.

Hearing the late Jessica Walter in my head "Do you want ants? Thats how you get ants!" I spilled coffee everywhere last night, basically smacked that cup down. Still cleaning up the splatter!
