Please do, or kick them out. It is fair to expect some level of alignment as requirement for membership

I don't want to hear that they're "considering" it, actually do it.

They 'consider' it, Hungary backs down, 1 week later Hungary blocks another decision involving the Ukraine. Repeat ad infinitum

Don't consider it...just fucking do it! Ffs, with all this 'may', 'might', and 'consider' bullshit.
Organ orban is obviously a puppet.

That's the issue. Too much threatening, too little going forward with it.

No one wants unnecessary conflict. We all want to get along. But when you have people acting in bad faith, who know you're bluffing, they'll take advantage of you everytime.

Because they know you'll complain but that's the extent of it. If they act in bad faith apply consequences, don't hold back. When they complain or throw a pity party don't waver. They knew it was coming, they were warned.

With the US adding fuel to the fire we're at a crossroads in history. Russia wants to buy time, and excessive bureocracy and empty threats only aid them and their cronies.

Better late than never

[Orban argues that] epidemics would spread due to insufficient vaccination rates among Ukrainians

I was expecting all other vile, baseless attack from that swine, but this one I didn't see coming...

Just being devil's advocate, but what's the point of a voting system when those in power can strip voting rights from a country when their votes are inconvenient.

I'm not supporting Orban here, because he's a Putin puppet that. However if your system can't handle a single country disagreeing without needing to cheat the system, you might want to question your system.

There should be checks and balances on everything, including determining when member states have gone rogue.

@Reddfugee42 @wewbull Any system without checks and balances has already gone rogue. Hungary is an example, and soon the US will be as well.

They have consistently moved away from our ideals to the benefit of our enemies while defrauding out coffers. We need mechanisms to halt this. I would prefer to see them removed completely, they have not made enough of an effort to remain a member.

I agree, but it appears to be the weakness of all multi-national organisations. The UN security council is paralyzed by the fact that the US and Russia have veto powers. The League of Nations was similarly paralyzed before it. NATO can't do anything unless the US is involved, and the EU is hamstring by one nation out of 27.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Why have a system with veto powers at all. One country should not be able to stop something.

[–] rockerface@lemm.ee 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's not cheating the system tho, it's part of the system. Blocking a country's veto power is not something they can just pull out of their ass, there's a process.

And Hungary has earned it after 3 years of downright hostile positions to further Russia

[–] riodoro1@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

They considered it and decided not to.
