every day I yearn for a Magneto movie where he is just straight up right about everything.

[–] darkcalling@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago

Under communism this will be the only allowed format of super hero cape-shit movie. Just a series of movies where Magneto is right and vindicated and eventually wins in the series with the help of his human communist comrades and a broad group of mutants. And it ends with him visiting his friend Professor X in a comfortable low security re-education facility (actually located in the professor's mansion for some reason) and playing chess with him in a chefs-kiss homage to the old movies where Magneto is imprisoned and Xavier visits him to play chess. Then as the credits roll Magneto appears for a short message to remind the audience that in real life hundreds of thousands of ordinary people risked it all, sacrificed greatly and gave their lives to overthrow capitalism and that they are the true super heroes.

MAGNETO WANTS TO KILL EVERYONE! NOOOOO

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 46 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I've only seen some of the movies, so forgive me if my understanding of the story is wrong.

That being said, I think it's a little harsh to call Xavier a sellout. He's providing shelter and education to young people who've been kicked out of their homes, who probably wouldn't survive for long on their own. The fact he's managed to make it financially solvent should be seen as laudable. And... more than that, Magneto wouldn't be able to cultivate members for his own movement without Xavier doing this! They're really not diametric opposites, so much as mutually dependent.

The relationship between Xavier and Magneto is both dialectical and homoerotic

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 45 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Not exactly a sellout, just a lib

In the 2023 Hellfire Gala storyline, Charles Xavier mind controlled a unified mutant nation at the height of their power into peacefully surrendering to Orchis (an intergovernmental org formed by every major world government to exterminate mutants). They told him to force every mutant on earth to walk through portals that would “exile them off planet” or they’d execute random humans and blame mutants to prevent Xavier from realizing his dream of being accepted by polite society. Xavier agreed and tried to mind control every mutant on earth to walk into these portals against their will. To the surprise of absolutely no one, the portals were intended to kill any mutant that walked through them and effectively culled like 90% of the mutant population from Marvel continuity. Orchis then killed a bunch of humans and blamed it on mutants anyway just to spite Xavier.

Calling Xavier a sellout is putting it kindly.

"fell for it again despite my godlike psychic powers" award

[–] porcupine@lemmygrad.ml 20 points 2 weeks ago

Literally pages before this happened Jean Grey was about to telepathically pluck the racism out of every human’s mind with her godlike psychic powers, but thank goodness Charles was there to show everyone a better way

This is the third time they've played that card? My God marvel, just do a reset on the main canon. There's a reason why Ultimate sold as well as it did, DC does it every 20 years or so.

Don't worry, they retconned/baited us with this mutant genocide and everybody was fine, thus justifying Xavier's decisions...once again. Getting really tired of Charles ngl. Also really wish they'd just let a Genosha or Krakoa be a permanent or at least long-lasting fixture instead of doing yet another genocide plot.

I didn’t find “actually every mutant who ever died is in a secret pocket dimension disconnected from the rest of reality where you can pretend they’re all off having a good time while we never mention them again,” to be a particularly satisfying resolution to 5 years of world building and character growth.

hey that's where my childhood cat is

[–] DefinitelyNotAPhone@hexbear.net 42 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Xavier is the well-meaning lib with money who sets up a shelter for gay teens, Magneto is Huey Newton.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 27 points 2 weeks ago

Magneto is Marcus Garvey

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 36 points 2 weeks ago

My biggest problem with Xavier is that he seems to be obsessed with respectability politics.

Even as a kid I thought Magnetos crew had a point

The reply is only someone screenshotting the tags from the post and posting them as an image, so https://bauliya.tumblr.com/post/653058755961962496/i-love-the-x-men-so-much-because-thats-just-what will have the same effect and doesn’t require login as well as being more accessible with the tags being text instead of an image.

I kinda feel like reading X-Men from the beginning to now, where would be a good place to do that

[–] wolfinthewoods@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I'd recommend Giant-Size X-Men #1, which started the Claremont era and is responsible for most of what we would think of as the X-Men today. I recently got Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1 on loan from the library, which collects the first 30 or so issues. It's pretty expensive (and rare, I believe) so you might want to look into going through your local library as well. Mine got it through the inter-library loan system, which is nationwide, your library might have inter-library service as well if you ask them about it.

It's a bit hokey, with some mid-70s cheese, but it's fun to see the start of what defines the X-Men even to this day, arguably (I don't think many would object, really) more so than the Lee/Kirby originals. Although, I have been meaning to go back to the beginning when I get the chance, only because it's my least read version of the X-Men (ironic, I know).

Also, there are less...legal means, if you don't mind those avenues: Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1-3 Download
