I'm so happy we have Pixelfed.ca today! Now canadians have an easy drop-in replacement to Instagram!

I believe Fedecan's next project should be to set up a matrix instance to keep our comms secure within Canada.

[–] Noved@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Excellent! When pixelfed was growing I was going to join but abstained as there was no .ca instance yet. On and hoping to be active!

Find me @noveda for occasional bread/baking or dog content haha

[–] DannyBoy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm going to join this. I was disappointed there was no Canadian instance when I joined earlier. This is hosting started today?

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

We've been setting up for the past week or so, and we opened registration yesterday :)

[–] breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Maybe right after a Friendica server? πŸ˜‡

[–] LimpRimble@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Friendica

Would that make it Friendicaca?

I think we can both agree that the Peertube instance can come last as that would be the most difficult with the storage requirements.

[–] frostythesnowman@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

What are the second and third icons from the left representing?

Fedecan, ?, ?, CBC, Lemmy.ca

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The elephant is the mstdn.ca logo. Not sure about the mountains. It's familiar, but I can't place it.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That’s the Pixelfed.ca logo.

OP said something about a Canadian pixelfed instance so I assume that's one of them πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Am American. May I join?

As a Finnish-Canadian I’m all in on this trend. I’ve already switched out the majority of apps and subscriptions to European alternatives and have been buying European products for a while now, even chose the car with that as one of the criteria. I’d love to hear about good Canadian products that I could buy that are available in Europe.

Any ideas for a Google Photos replacement service?

[–] Routhinator@startrek.website 2 points 21 hours ago

Delpoy Nextcloud with the Memories app. It's a google photos clone that has the Nextcloud ecosystem behind it which means you can replace Drive, Notes, Reader, Podcasts, Hangouts and more.

[–] DannyBoy@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Self host Immich. It's a Google Photos clone and has the same look and functionality.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think it still leans on containers as a crutch. Having been in security and build too long, it's a no from me.

Why dont you like containers?

[–] LonelyLarynx@beehaw.org 5 points 2 days ago

Selfhost your own instance of Immich. It's an open source Google Photos clone, but with better features!

[–] CowsLookLikeMaps@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Nextcloud self hosted. Pikapods is European and super easy but someone else can chime in with Canadian options.

[–] rijom@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Its nice, but Memories app as part of Nextcloud is better and Nextcloud completes the rest of the Google suite (Drive, Calendar, Notes, Reader, Podcasts, Hangouts)

If you're going to put in the time, Nextcloud has more value.

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

I absolutely love this app. I dropped my iCloud Photos and moved to this self hosted via docker.

I paid the base license for this. I now they’ve changed the way they do things for the underlying license, but for me, it’s been great!

[–] xnx@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why is it impossible to find the price for the non self hosted version

[–] rijom@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 hours ago

Do they even offer a hosting service? I think the product is just the software.

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

I use Syncthing to keep various folders synced between my desktop, laptop, phone and tablet.

Most of the folders are just between laptop and desktop (writing, art, etc...) and my phone's camera folder is set up to share to the desktop so it syncs as soon as I take a picture.

[–] potter2010@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sync.com

While it's not an exact replacement in that it does all files, we have been happy with our recent switch. They have a desktop and mobile apps that handle all the syncing.

[–] Albbi@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Hey, that's a great suggestion! I was wondering if there was a Canadian service like this.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Is that an ocean train. Wut.

[–] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

you never saw the movie 2012? it's an ark

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No. Why is an ark shaped like an aerodynamic train?

[–] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

tbh, it's a Roland Emmerich disaster movie. they don't usually make a lot of sense

best watched with brain switched firmly off

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sounds like best not watched

[–] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It's got cool visuals and a lot of action.

It's not a complete waste of 2hrs 38mins

It's bad in an entertaining way

[–] x4740N@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

Does anyone know where lemm.ee is hosted ?

[–] sunaurus@lemm.ee 8 points 2 days ago

Our servers are currently in Finland, but this is subject to change if necessary for financial/technical reasons. We've also used German servers in the past for example. In general we're definitely staying in the EU, though.

[–] nyan@lemmy.cafe 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Well, ".ee" is the country TLD for Estonia. Doesn't guarantee it's hosted there, though, and I have no idea what the rules for .ee domain names are (whether they're restricted to residents or not). My guess would be "hosted somewhere in Europe".

[–] vaguerant@fedia.io 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Best I can find officially is "not the US".

Lemm.ee servers are not hosted in the US and therefore not subject to US jurisdiction.

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 2 points 2 days ago

everything behind cloudflare these days 😑
