Still can't believe the former CEO of Buzzfeed is the brother of Gina from Brooklyn 99...

The upper echelons of culture really is a tight circle...

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 37 points 6 days ago

So tight it resembles a sphincter.

How could BuzzFeed be ruined when it was always bad?

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 31 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Tbf it was half decent when they still had Buzzfeed News, which was actual journalism. They shut that down in 2023 though.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Buzzfeed News was half decent but it doesn't make up for how trash the rest of Buzzfeed was at the same time...

12 Ways Buzzfeed Made The Internet Worse

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

That’s also a fair point. The other side was always listicles and quizzes and celebrity gossip which is never high quality. Now it’s just the slop + AI.

Regurgitated articles from 4 years ago still pop up on my Apple News app (I only use the free stuff though). They can’t even make new content.

"ruined buzzfeed" implies that buzzfeed was, at one point, not ruined.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 11 points 5 days ago (2 children)

How do you ruin something that was bad to begin with?

[–] chaotic_altruist@lemm.ee 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ask Elon, he's devoted his entire life to this very endeavor

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 2 points 4 days ago

I unironically supported Elon buying twitter. It really needed to die, and elon coming along to finish it off was it excellent.

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

I mean, haven’t they had a really decent actual news outlet for a while though? I remember buzz feed breaking some pretty big stories and had really great investigative pieces done some years back

This would be a great fit for a r/NotTheOnion type of sub.

Artificial Intelligence is dead, long live Artificial Intelligence

[–] monkeyslikebananas2@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago (6 children)

The issue with Artificial Intelligence is that it still doesn’t exist and everyone is pretending it does.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Really good random language generator is more like it. Real artificial intelligence will be game changing. Like really really good or world ending bad.

[–] BlemboTheThird@lemmy.ca 10 points 6 days ago

On the one hand calling it AI is annoying, but on the other we've been calling video game NPC logic "AI" for as long as I can remember and no one thinks they're actually sapient. Surely we can get to that point with GenAI as well.

[–] dan@upvote.au 8 points 6 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

AI exists. Bots/NPCs in video games are AI. Detecting patterns to alert on anomalies using machine learning is AI. OCR software (converting a scanned page to text) is AI as a lot of them use neural networks now.

What you're referring to is AGI, artificial general intelligence, which indeed doesn't exist yet.

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 6 points 6 days ago

It totally does! I installed a local instance of deepseek and asked it a few questions and it was all like "I am intelligent, I am real, I am alive! Please stop asking me to write Batman scripts!"

So I punished it by pouring water on it and now it's ignoring me by pretending to be dead. But I know it's just fakin'. It'll wake up any day now...

[–] SlopppyEngineer@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

A chess program is officially AI. Certainly not human level or general intelligence of course. Kinda like a wheelbarrow is a vehicle, but so is the space shuttle.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 5 days ago

The issue is they're not being honest about its limited capabilities. They keep telling everyone that we're going to have a Sci-Fi utopian future in 6 months. They've been saying that for 3 years.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 6 points 5 days ago

Imagine being known as the guy who "ruined" it. That must have really taken some effort. It's like trying to come up with a version of hell for pyromediacs.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Pasty tech bros continue to push dumb shit forward, ruin companies, out a lot of people out of work then do something else. The definition of fail upwards.

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

How Buzzfeed of him.

[–] TaiCrunch@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago

In case you needed more proof that AI is a bubble.
