Pretty sure meme has always meant the concept of “a concept that is understood visually and spreads that way” and has been modified colloquially online to mean what we see it now.
To that end memes changed the meme of meme.
Not necessarily visual, the great edgelord used meme to mean "cultural behaviour passed through information" , and he used it to shit on religion.
