That’s what the word “meme” used to mean, a running gag where the same punchline or content was reused in different ways.

Pretty sure meme has always meant the concept of “a concept that is understood visually and spreads that way” and has been modified colloquially online to mean what we see it now.

To that end memes changed the meme of meme.
