Degeneracy is the lifeblood of a healthy online space, and furries are the canaries of enshittification. If the furries are gone or too well behaved, it's a sign of a dying platform.

Honestly not even bad life advice...

You might not get somebody's POV, you might think it's weird or bizarre, hell you might have no fucking clue how they got there, but the end of the day, as long as they're not harming other people in the process, does it matter how they view the world?

Being exposed to all different walks of life is a good thing, no matter whether it's Tumblr fetishes or real-world diversity. There's a reason that higher education leads people to be less bigoted, and this is a big part of it.

Edit: Just adding on. I know myself I used to be a lot more close-minded than I am now, and I credit going to university with that - as said above, it opened my mind to different POVs and walks of life. Albeit I'm still not quite ready for whatever fetish pooltoys involves haha

[–] pimeys@lemmy.nauk.io 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This. I keep following many kinks in the fediverse, but I'm just a quite normie gay cis man myself. It's important to understand how different people are, and be ok with that.

It’s important to understand how different people are, and be ok with that.

You don't even need to understand, just respect.

Weird opinion of mine; of the major varieties of porn, furry porn is significantly less objectionable.

  • Live Action: major sex trafficking issues, "revenge porn"
  • Hentai: its drawn and actual people arent harmed, but what the actual fuck is with Japans r@pe and child fetishes?!
  • Furry porn: it's drawn; you get some of the same awful stuff as hentai but it's heavily frowned upon by the community and much easier to filter out.

Apologies to any furries, or other kin who might be reading and feel hurt, but I genuinely don't get how you feel the way you do. BUT

I also don't HAVE to "get it" to know it's who you are, it's part of your identity, and even if I wanted to change it I couldn't.

Be as "weird" or "normal" or "kinky" or "reserved" as you want to be. It's none of my business. It's none of anyone's business except yours.

All the bullshit fear mongering hatred is so fucking stupid. "oh look they are wearing something that helps them feel closer to who they are, that makes me angry!" like Bruh.... There are much more important things to worry about. Like how the country is going to implode in the next 4 years because half the US is bigoted pieces of shit who want a bigoted piece of shit in charge, and they LITERALLY want to wipe out people like this.....

Fuck outta here with bullshit divisive hatred over something as trivial as "they're a furry/something not cishetero/whatever"

Be a furry. Be ungovernable. Be whatever you are. To hell with republican hangups.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm a big fan of the maxim that how people talk about furries tells you a LOT about how deep their progressive ideals actually run.

There are way too many self proclaimed leftists who either want to or feel compelled to reflexively shit on furries, because they're the designated punching bags that it's OK to mock. This, despite the fact that furries aren't harming anyone.

I don't get furry kinks. I don't get spending thousands of dollars on a fursuit. I don't get the fursona thing. I do know enough to know that for most furries it's not a kink, furry porn is only consumed by a very small subset of the community, and a lot of self-identified furries probably can't afford a fursuit.

But most of all, I know they're not hurting anyone. So who the fuck cares what they do with their time and money, or how they get off, or fucking whatever? It's none of my god damn business.

I hope every furry is having a good time, and I hope you all get an abundance of head pats.

And I wish that the so-called leftists who keep punching down on them would find someone actually worth shitting on to be mean to instead.

Like Nazis. It's always good to be mean to Nazis.

Every time I hear about a kink I don't know, I am compelled to look it up. I have to know, I'm hungry for this knowledge

[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 24 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

Here, the pool toy furs are kinda cute. I'm personally not into it as a kink, but they're cute

Edit: ~~add "order:score" or "order:favcount" to the search terms (for an example, "pool_toy rating:safe order:score") if you want to sort by total score or number of times favorited.~~ replaced e621 link with e926 so you can't accidentally disable the SFW filter (just replace e926 with e621 in the URL if you want the naughty pics). Also added "animate_inanimate" and "order:favcount". The latter can be replaced with "order:score" if you'd prefer to filter by user score.

[–] nicknonya@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

few words of advice:
e621 has a sister site called e926.net that's basically just e621 with a hardcoded rating:safe filter,
and you should always add either order:score or order:favcount at the end of the search because by default it's sorted from newest post to last and new posts can have mistakes including missing solely needed tags or having the wrong rating.

[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Good point. I don't tend to have order:(whatever) because I like seeing whatever new pops up. I forgot about e926.

Edit: forgot a word.

[–] nicknonya@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago

[–] mossy_@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Mossy, don't take this the wrong day, but I'm laughing at the idea of you first looking at this post and thinking "I know someone is going to have questions about this and goddamnit I have the answers"

Thank you for your service

[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

That is exactly what was going through my head, Mossy! Well, kinda. The other part is being like, "look, this may be a kink or fetish, but there's plenty of sfw stuff; you don't have to think it's weird just because sex makes you uncomfy". It sucks when people assume something you're into is purely sexual because then social taboos kick in and you can't talk about it anymore.

Imagine if you really liked plushies, enough so that you have a "plushsona". You're not into the sexual side of it, you just really, really like plushies, and you like telling people about the different names and personalities of your plushies. At some point someone gets it into their head that you're actually aroused by your plushies and that you might even fuck them at night. Now everyone thinks it's a fetish and no one wants to talk about your """perverted interests""" anymore.

That's why. That kinda shit sucks.

Edit: it feels kinda weird to admit this, but I honestly, unironically like furry porn for the artistic aspect of it. Sure, it makes me horny, but that's not why I like it. If I wanted something to just get off to, AI has gotten good enough that I'm sure I could generate something that'd strike my fancy.

But that's not why I enjoy it. I like the fact that you can see that, while cartoonish, stylized and hand-drawn, these are pictures of real people sharing real moments of intimacy with each other. The emotions, interactions, and so forth feel way more candid and vivid than anything else I've seen. You can tell that these characters all have their own back stories based on their designs, the way they carry themselves, the way they interact with one another, the words they use, the clothes they wear (or don't wear), and so forth. They're more real.

I don't get that feeling from traditional pornography, hentai or rule34 stuff. It just doesn't have the same... something.

That's also why I don't think furry artists need to be concerned with generative AI either. I've seen enough of both, and even though a lot of the AI stuff I've seen is probably good enough to fool 90% of skeptics while also being more photorealistic than most artists are probably capable of, yet I still vastly prefer ~~human~~ furry-made stuff. AI's just eye-candy. It doesn't have the same level of love and care put into it as most non-ai stuff.

[–] mossy_@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Some people on the internet seem to think passion = sexual arousal, I see it all the time with special interests.

You can obviously be passionate about pokemon, for example, without having carnal desires towards them, but the fact that they're popular in certain kinds of art causes people to judge a huge community by its horniest creators.

That's not to say the horny art is bad or anything (although I have a particular gripe with fantasies that wouldn't pass the Harkness test), but it seems to always draw the wrong sort of attention.

My reaction to Sounding was "this is just like a different flavour of pegging, this makes sense to exist"

My first reaction was "Ouch". My second reaction was "yeah of course that's a thing"

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

My reaction was "this is deeply unsettling and probably a good way to get a UTI, but whatever"

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago

My reaction was "not my dick, not my problem".

[–] TheSlad@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 weeks ago

20 years of sounding, never had a UTI.

[–] pmc@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

As long as you sterilize your equipment and use proper sterile medical lubricant, not much risk for UTIs actually

[–] TheSlad@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

I don't remember what my first reaction was. I think I was around 7 or 8 and bored... now I have a life-long kink of stuffing rods in my penis... 🤷🏼‍♂️

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 28 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The most pragmatic view is “how does this affect me? It doesn’t? Who cares.”

[–] ShareMySims@sh.itjust.works 43 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Something doesn't have to affect you personally for it to be evil and need to be stopped, that's how allyship works.

A better way to look at it would be "is this harming anyone? It isn't? Who cares." (with the clear understanding that fighting back against oppression is self defence, not initiating harm)

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

100% agree. My comment was more about how much easier it would be for someone who isn’t moved by compassion to just not be a gaping asshole by going “not my issue.”

My personal feelings are that there are people I care about who have aspects to them I don’t understand and that doesn’t keep me from caring about them or believing they have the same rights as anyone else to live their lives in a way that expresses their complete selves. Attempts to harm them because of who they are are wrong and I will always fight against those who want to keep people from being their true selves.

[–] ShareMySims@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh, I definitely get where you were coming from, and I agree, it seems like even the bare minimum is too big of an ask from some people, mine was more of a reminder that we really should be aiming for more (and not an implication that you don't, sorry if it came across that way).

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

All good, I didn’t take it that way. We should be expecting more than the bare minimum, but even the bare minimum would mean people I care about having safer lives.

[–] TheSlad@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Or you can just BE the weird horny furry. Everyone else will feel so normal and tame compared to the degen shit you beat your meat too!

[–] EmptySlime@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

I think the weird ones with the horns are usually called Scalies. Wait no I suppose goats exist... Carry on.

Jokes aside this comment made me laugh so hard because before I figured out I was ace and was still forcing myself to keep up a "normal" sex drive for my ex the only porn that did it for me was the super degenerate kind. So for the longest time I thought I had just a bunch of weird fetishes but in reality I was just so asexual that it was indistinguishable from a severe porn addiction like some Degenerate Horseshoe Theory.

So I guess the point is just: Become Ungovernable. Beat your meat to Furry Porn

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 17 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Should I Google otherkin? I don't mind learning about other people's kinks, but I recently saw the pictures of the dude who finished in a shoe box every time, and now I'm more careful with what I search all willy nilly.

[–] Cornflake@pawb.social 26 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Otherkin, or therians, are not a kink. They're folks that believe themselves on a spiritual level to have the spirit of something else (animal spirits).

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 27 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Therian here: It's like dysphoria about your species.

[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

How does that even happen? I know exactly the feelings you're talking about, I think; but just... how did our brains decide being human just wasn't who we are? Like, what the fuck lol.

Edit: also, why are so many therians foxes, dogs or wolves? I'm not sure I've ever seen bird, feline, lizard or other therians.

[–] shani66@ani.social 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Because those animals are cool. You see the others you mentioned too, but you don't see animals no one likes. It's less soul searching and finding you are something else and more finding something cool and wanting to be like it.

Which, don't get me wrong, i totally get. I'm a transhumanist, i understand being just human is a negative.

[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

Because those animals are cool. You see the others you mentioned too, but you don't see animals no one likes. It's less soul searching and finding you are something else and more finding something cool and wanting to be like it.

I suppose. I mean, I think it goes a bit deeper than that; I legit feel incomplete if I think about my lack of tail or snout. It's no where near as bad as gender dysphoria, I only notice it if I think about it (as opposed to a constant "buzz" in the back of my head like dysphoria) but it's there. Like, some part of my brain decided that I'm supposed to have a tail and snout. Maybe it's some crazy-ancient leftover that never got totally filtered out from when we did have tails and snouts?

I'm a transhumanist, i understand being just human is a negative.

I tend to self-id as a transhumanist more often than a therian. It depends on the crowd, but it seems easier to explain that I'm into the idea of body modification for the purpose of augmenting/extending existing abilities, granting new abilities, or changing appearance based on personal taste; than the fact that my brain swings between seeing myself as an extinct theropod (an androgynous, feathered troodontid of mysterious gender with mossy-looking feathers; aka "Mossy Feathers") to a wholly mythological creature (a very obviously fem dragon/dragon-hybrid who's appearance I'm still trying to work out).

[–] nicknonya@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

otherkins and therians aren't a kink, they're ~~people*~~ individuals who like to think of themselves as non-human, usually animals but it's possible for them to be robots or AIs too.

also safe search is pretty good nowdays, save for some unpredictable algorithmic fuckup the days of looking up blue waffles and getting hit with diseased vaginas are over

~* Some may object over being called people but i can't think of any other word that wouldn't have me repeating myself~

Not a furry, but I do have a TF fetish. Using furry websites exposed me to the good and bad sides of furries and ultimately has, I believe, led me to more critically think about the nature of online rhetoric when it comes to repressed identities and over-expressed identities.

I'm given to believe that a big draw of fursuiting, for example, is that they can be whoever they want in public. They can bear the whips and arrows of scorn because they're in a silly badger costume and don't give a single fuck about anyone else's opinion about what they do with their time and money and bodies legally in public.

I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't some kernel of resentment against the ability to be who you want to be without fear of societal pressure that can cause a kind of overcorrection on other end that just pushes people into blind rage.

"Ha'ak! How can you even look at it! You let her," and Vimes had seldom heard a word sprayed with so much venom, "her flaunt herself, here! And it's happening everywhere because people have not been firm, not obeyed, have let the old ways slide! Everywhere there are reports. They're eating away at everything dwarfish with their... their soft clothes and paint and beastly ways. How can you be King and allow this? Everywhere they are doing it and you do nothing! Why should they be allowed to do this?" Now [they were] sobbing. "I can't!"

specifically characters that are pooltoys, as in made of air-filled smooth squeaky plastics

[–] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Pool toy transformation is a whole thing. I don't quite see the appeal either, although I can see it as a hybrid between latex kink (via the shiny and smooth "skin") and doll kink (which in turn is related to D/s). It seems to be mostly a furry thing.

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why pool toys in particular? Is it just because they're human sized? Is Helen Parr once again responsible?

[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 19 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

No, they're usually "furry", so animals or animal people. I understand it in the same way I understand people into plushie transformation. Imagine being a soft creature with no worries or cares that people hug and cuddle for comfort. The worst imaginable thing that could happen to you is if you split a seam. Alternatively, imagine being a buoyant creature who's only job is to float, bob up and down on the water, and occasionally carry a person (or more, if you're big enough). No worries, not a care in the world except for maybe the occasional air leak. No thoughts, head empty.

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] MossyFeathers@pawb.social 10 points 2 weeks ago

Basically that, lol. That said, the general vibe I've gotten from seeing plushie or pool toy art is that it's less about mindless sex (compared to drone or doll transformation) and more about filling some other emotional need in a mindless manner; like mindless comfort or relaxation. I mean, there absolutely is a sex side to it (I've seen that art too), but my impression is that they aren't centered around it.

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Pool toys, like inflatables? I guess that's one way to practice safe sex

[–] nicknonya@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

no no the character is themselves a pool toy

[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Standard furniture kink, just in water? Sounds like fun. I'm curious about buoyancy though.
