That headline is rather confusing. Then I realised that "Nothing" is a fricking company.

Also branding his stuff as Nothing phone/OS/ear is hilarious. Hilariously bad.

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 31 points 3 months ago

totally agree. this guy couldnt market his way out of a paper bag... like naming a social media server 'moist'

[–] subignition@piefed.social 14 points 3 months ago

I think it's a bit of a stroke of genius on the article author's part, because it's a great double entendre the way it's written.

'This is a company for grown ups'

And yet you don't trust your employees to get their work done unless directly before your watchful eye? Get real, chump.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 55 points 3 months ago (1 children)

"People can't communicate as well remotely," the CEO, projecting their personal lack of communication skills on everyone else.

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 16 points 3 months ago

Unironically written by the CEO of a mobile phone company.

[–] snooggums@midwest.social 72 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

“I know this is a controversial decision that may not be a fit for everyone, and there are definitely companies out there that thrive in remote or hybrid setups,” he added. “But that’s not right for our type of business, and won’t help us fully realize our potential as a company.”

By comparison, Nothing’s demand for five-day office attendance may sting for employees who helped shape the company while embracing its founding work-from-home environment.

Besides calling people who want flexibility children, the company was founded as work from home even though that wasn't right for the type of company. Sounds like the CEO doesn't know how the company works.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei suggested that those unable to transition from remote working should leave the company and “find an environment where you thrive.”

Get completely fucked you dismissive shitbag.

Pei said in the email, telling employees who are worried about flexibility that “this is a company for grown ups.”

I'll say it again. Get completely…

I typically cheer device makers because I want competition to force my preferred device maker to compete on innovation. I had been on the side of Nothing. I now want it to fail. I want this dickfaced asshole executive to find out he ran his company into the ground by pissing off the talented people below him.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Most likely his company will slowly crumble over the coming decades as his top talent leaves due to mistreatment while he wonders helplessly and obliviously how it all went wrong

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

He will blame it on "the children who don't want to work".

[–] AlecSadler@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 months ago

Seriously. I won't buy Nothing-anything at this point over this move. Carl Pei can fuck right off.

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 56 points 3 months ago (1 children)

"Nothing is requiring employees to be in the office five days a week"

Yes, you're right. There isn't a thing that requires this. You shouldn't be required to do so.

The problem with naming a company an idiotic name like "Nothing" is that it's so easy to make who's-on-first jokes.

[–] huzzahunimpressively@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

theres nothing i hate more than nothing nothing keeps me up at night i toss and turn over nothing nothing can cause a great big fight

Yeah I was really confused when I read the title lol, I have to remember that there is a company named Nothing

[–] sasquash@sopuli.xyz 52 points 3 months ago (1 children)

how to get rid of your best and most talented workers

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 29 points 3 months ago (1 children)

How to do lay off people without having to fork out severance pay.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I've seen that theory a lot, but I just don't think it's actually all that common. Layoffs are layoffs, but the common thing about layoffs is they are usually calculated to cut the worst performing employees and go up from there.

A forced RTO policy is going to be unpredictable in who stays and who goes

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago

Even worse, mandatory RTO selects for employees who have no choice but to stay. The talent will bail out.

I'm assuming he made this declaration from his office, otherwise it would be hypocritical, and that's impossible. Surely.

[–] Seraph@fedia.io 25 points 3 months ago

Projection. Guys like this are admitting that they themselves are incapable of the discipline required for at home work and think no one else can either.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 24 points 3 months ago

Not that it matters but that would make me incompatible with the company.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 24 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I really liked the work Nothing was doing, what a bummer. "this is a company for grown ups" my ass, how condescending.

[–] warm@kbin.earth 23 points 3 months ago (2 children)

What work? They are just regular phones, with a bit more ego centric bs marketing showered over.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yeah their hardware was overpriced and I couldn't find any justification for their prices being higher than "well but we're independent and our hardware is aesthetically pleasing"

Like... I get why Teracube and Fairphone are expensive for their specs. But Nothing gave me cryptobro vibes

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Fairphone are expensive for their specs

ye, and its a price I gladly paid for my fairphone 5. I love that thing :D

The design and interface mostly. Nothing UI is actually pleasurable to use, but I'm a fan of minimalism.

[–] warm@kbin.earth 6 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Fair, but isn't it just pretty much just stock android? I guess it's nice to have another option out there for (almost) stock though.

Wait, a CEO that's a total sack of shit? I don't believe it!

/s

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

It's a requirement at this point. Evil is the only way up, or so they tell themselves.

[–] JakenVeina@lemm.ee 19 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This right here. This article title. This is why you don't name your company "Nothing".

[–] Red_October@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

And when I saw it I had initially thought "Wouldn't it be funny if someone named their company Nothing and was struggling to push a return to office?"

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 18 points 3 months ago

Why would we listen to this fucking tool? He's literally the CEO of nothing.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

“Remote work is not compatible with a high ambition level plus high speed,”

Because wasting time shipping squishy sacks of flesh through meatspace to push buttons is so much faster than having them push buttons at home. /s

But if you have as shitty a company name as "Nothing" then I guess you need all the ambition you can get.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 months ago

You forget, said shipping of fleshbags is done on UNPAID time. CEOs love unpaid time.

[–] hdnsmbt@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Pei said in the email, telling employees who are worried about flexibility that “this is a company for grown ups.”

During the next pandemic, do employees get to refuse working from home on the grounds of being grown ups?

Well, if I was ever going to consider buying any "Nothing" product, that's enough to say fuck that notion indefinitely.

Also makes me wonder about teenage engineering at this point and the company they keep... Nothing and the Rabbit - shit hype products from shit grifter companies run by shit people.

[–] shutz@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 months ago

The employees should just leave and found a new company. Call it "Something".

[–] HEXN3T@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

What a huge L. I thought this guy was cool.

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

It's only a matter of time in a position like that before they go full Elon.

[–] Gilles_D@feddit.org 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Ah, layoffs are coming to nothing soon. Well, sorry to hear that they are struggling.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 3 months ago

I mean, presumably they had to grab office space to make this move since they started during the pan, so maybe not.

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 12 points 3 months ago

Oh look, Carl pei is scum.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 11 points 3 months ago

What an asshole

More tech workers should unionize so they can say "fuck you" to this kind of idiocy.

[–] not_fond_of_reddit@lemm.ee 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Fair enough, I’ll show up at the office when they pay me for the time I just wasted commuting to the office. It’s my only ”asset” that is truly mine in this day and age.

If you're confused like me, the company is called Nothing.

My ~~company~~ employer, after covid said “we are considering moving back to a hybrid way of working”. I replied “Well I am considering resigning to go somewhere that is fully remote. I am not the only one”

And we never had a mandatory return to office mentioned again

factory worker, industrial production, security gaurd, janitor, HR cock sucker, upper mamagment boot licker, ...yes so many jobs require you to be in office and cant be done remotely but the problem is slavewaging 50 hrs a week (including commmuting and preparation for work) with minimum to no paid vaccation days a year

theres nothing i hate more than nothing nothing keeps me up at night i toss and turn over nothing nothing can cause a great big fight

[–] ElectroLisa@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (3 children)

Kinda predictable from a person who claimed their product (Phone 2a) has the best unboxing experience, despite bundling an USB cable to it only.
