Bad Omens - Like a Villian

Not a huge metal person, but coming from a rock background, I've really been into Bad Omens lately. They have a kinda alternative sound to them imo.

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I've been on a Spiritbox kick for a while. Chelsea Wolfe scratches an itch I didn't know was there, folk metal, like coffeehouse with the espresso machine grinding out the melody.

I'm going to show my age with this list, and metal is such a large genre I don't always know what counts. Hopefully there's new ones for some folks that you'll enjoy as much as I do.

Noora Louhimo is a goddess. What a voice! (The singer of Battle Beast).

I've seen her live and I tell you, she somehow sounds even better?!

As an atheist living in an incredibly conservative Christian area, it's fun wearing band shirts for acts like you've listed. Lamb of God, Cannibal Corpse, Mayhem...

Sleep Token

These guys have an incredible range and mix up different styles in a way that is quite unique. I'm not normally someone who pays that much attention to drums but their drummer really is amazing. The singer can do both clean and 'dirty' vocals.

First time in ages I've been excited about a new band!

Chokehold

The Summoning

Take Me Back To Eden

Hypnosis

The Offering

Vore

Some sick Pacific Northwest metal/hardcore to checkout:

There’s SO MUCH good modern hardcore music here right now that I’m barely scratching the surface, but hopefully at least one of these does something for you!

  1. alien weaponry. Kiwi band that have a lot of Maori (nz indigenous people/language) in their music.

  2. red. Christian metal band, but still good for non Christians since it's just based on Christian values not directly worship.

Try out some Botanist.

Two instrument black metal. Drums, and hammer dulcimer. Sometimes has Bass guitar. Very atmospheric. Interesting vibes.

here is their upcoming album which has some good singles

here is my favorite release

Hamferð is also pretty slick.

Their new album Men guðs hond er sterk is an absolute banger. Absolutely crushing death-doom. Their previous album, Tàmsins likam was probably my favorite album of the year.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 4 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

I'm listening to Botanist.

Fucking weird, but fucking good.

Hamfero is pretty solid.

In exchange I offer Devil

Cauldron

Panopticon

And Warmoon Lord

Mandroid Echostar - Catchy prog metal with clean vocals

Anaal Nathrakh - Grind/black metal with industrial influences

The Arcane Order - Long-form melodic death metal

Arcania - Kinda like a thrashier Gojira

Rivers of Nihil - Proggy death metal

Unfathomable Ruination - Brutal tech death

Thantifaxath - Dissonant black metal

We Lost the Sea - Post-metal. I need to give some context for this one:

Departure Songs is inspired by failed, yet epic and honourable journeys or events throughout history where people have done extraordinary things for the greater good of those around them, and the progress of the human race itself. This is a celebration and a tribute. Each song has it’s own story and is a soundtrack to that story.

This is our 3rd album and our first instrumental album. We’re exploring new ground and exploring ourselves in the past 2 and a bit years since Chris went on his own journey. It’s slightly bleak with shimmers of hope and layers of emotion. It’s a tribute and a catharsis of emotion and honesty.

I.e., their vocalist died and this was their way of grieving. Incredibly deep cut IMO.

Alpinist - "heavylowfastslowdark hardcore"

I recently discovered Fit for a King and I really like them! Actually got to see them live earlier this year :3c

[–] peteypete420@sh.itjust.works 4 points 7 months ago (5 children)

I think this is considered prog metal, not sure. But the band Animals as Companions. I think they are fucking awesome. Combat Cartography (iirc) is a awesome track check out.

I'm not into rock/metal enough to know all the genres that well, but alot of the heavier stuff has singers that just ruin it for me. Animals deals with that in Mt favorite way, no singer.

I love Jesters Dance by In Flames, but that seems to be one of the few they have without singing.

Kardashev - Snow Sleep

"Kardashev is a progressive death metal band hailing from Tempe, AZ, whose lyrics focus on the advancement of the human race through themes of technology, selflessness, love, and altruism. Given their positive take on death metal, their style has been jokingly referred to as “life metal,” and they also embrace the genre tag “deathgaze” (death metal + shoegaze) which perfectly describes their ambient death metal approach. Some of recommendations I did not already see, that are not-that-well-known; all of these are various flavors of melodic death metal:

Parasite Inc. - Once and for All

Avatar - Bloody Angel

The Agonist - Panophobia (unfortunately, the band is now defunct)

It’s prog but Angra with Kiko as lead guitarist is still the greatest of all time for me. Kiko left the band for Megadeth a little while back, their new guitarist is solid but just not on the same level. Rebirth, Fireworks and Temple of Shadows are probably my top 3 favorite albums.

Mechina - Siege. Take a metal band with industrial influences. Release an album. Take that album. Add tons of atmospherics and electronica. Release that version as well. Now take that, and add angelic votes, and some harsh and release that as well. You can buy whichever version you prefer. All great for the different reasons

Wayfarer – American Gothic. The jangly guitar alternate 1890s death/black metal band you didn’t know you needed.

Sermon - on golden verse. proggy anthemic melodeath with fantastic clean vocals.
