Bella Ciao is one of the most well-known protest songs around the world. Not knowing it is on the same level as not knowing, idk, Which Side Are You On, or The Battle Hymn Of The Republic. I have been going to protests for decades and have never heard it. I don't think it's as widespread as you are assuming.
I've seen videos of protests in England that featured it, my Iranian friend showed me student protest footage that had it, and I've heard it in person.
