Welcome to the fedieverse! I'm kinda jealous that your Cakeday is 9/11
You're just in time for the yearly
celebrations, and the yearly Salvador Allende mourning, though another funny thing overshadows them this year. Feel free to ask questions about the Fediverse. Hexbear is mainly federated with lemmygrad.ml and lemmy.ml, that means the reach/amount of content is not too big here. There are a lot of instances that have defederated us or we defederated them, mostly due to being shitlibs.
man, today sure is chaotic, innit? i'm grateful for the warm welcome, means a lot :3
first impressions are pretty great, although my main concern is how echochamber-y this place might be. probably not any worse than reddit, although who knows. i'm curious if there's any specific place on here for book recs/ community organizing tips?
Well, echochambers will arise in most forms of social media, though we have struggle sessions here. Sometimes about important things sometimes about less important things
There is a very nice post about theory recommendations by @Cowbee@hexbear.net.
Thanks for the shoutout comrade!
@zipper@hexbear.net I've argued that it's pretty impossible to create a true echo-chamber for leftists in the english-speaking internet. The overwhelming majority of us can't actually avoid engaging with liberalism in our day-to-day lives, so shutting out reactionaries from our spaces doesn't actually risk anything of value. In fact, it protects our marginalized comrades! We aren't perfect, but Hex is one of the best online communities I interact with, no question!
As for my theory list, it's my personal list. It's an ML list with a heavy dose of Red Sails influence. I think that's a pretty common position around here, but we also have anarchists and other forms of Marxists!
i think that's a fair point to make. i've had enough experience with twitter to know how quickly propaganda can spread, especially in a community where political takes are rarely if ever contested. which is why i've been a bit iffy initially to moving to a platform where only one side of the political aisle can participate, thinking that it would turn me into one of those 4chan nuts who seem to get off to the most brain-dead, asinine takes ever conceived. but what the american dems taught me is that constantly trying to hear neocons out and compromising at every turn is a futile endeavor, and developing your own ideological framework among people with similar values is the only thing that brings about actual results.
i'm still familiarizing myself with political thought (and not just political social media slop) so i'm cautious of the things i read online/ the communities i participate in. the last thing i wanna become is a liberal who thinks that writing clever posters to take to their cop-permitted midday hangout and having flags in their bio constitutes as "resistance". barf. this place is pretty small and it seems like most people here are familiar with one another. i like that. maybe i might even start a community organizing 101 type of thing. lefties really need to learn how to get together.
hope everyone reading this has a day full of joy and whimsy <3
Sounds cool! A lot of us are in orgs like
or others, we absolutely push getting organized!
down here in aus, our leftist scene is bleak at best. i guess we've got the socialist party but by some accounts they're a bit cultish on the inside (think ACP). my city in particular sucks bootycheeks when it comes to anything left-wing related so if i want anything to happen i've gotta do it myself. wish me luck i s'pose :P
Good luck comrade
fair enough, thank you for the pointers :3
