Then who are you? Do you even know who you are as a person if you don't have the ethics to make a stand? Do you just meh all over your morals? Just give up on everything you believe? Or is it that you don't have morals, and you're just making excuses?

[–] Goldmage263@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh yeah. Here I'm just a silly little installation wizard who contributes here attempting to be meaningful and provide conversation nuggets. In real life I'm playing that balancing act between ethics, my resources/influence, and trying to not burn out.

I've done plenty of things based off of morals without it being the "smart" or most personally beneficial decision. AirBnB just isn't one of those due to how much I can save and put towards local restaurants, bars, and tipping when I finally vacation. I also don't trust hotel corps to use my money ethically, and have used an AirBnB maybe once a year on average. I'm hoping I can have another actual vacation soon since it has been 4 years.

Also, I strongly believe that my responsibility is taking care of my wife and family first, then community/political contribution.

What about you? Where do you stay when traveling where there aren't friends or family?

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I don't travel. Like, at all. The most I travel is the 20 miles it takes to get my kid from his mom's house. I don't need the luxury of burning CO2 and ruining the housing market to have a good time.

[–] Goldmage263@sh.itjust.works 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Neat! I'm glad you are comfortable within your bubble.

On a different tonal note, it's very impressive you have the resources to single-handedly ruin the housing market, but choose not to. /s

I'm satisfied being well below average in CO2 contribution. I need to see new places in person, and that need serves me much better than putting all my efforts into lowering the CO2 average consumption by another -0.002 kg/year.

Who TF is comfortable? Definitely not me. You don't have a need to travel, you just don't give AF about anybody but yourself. Tell people in low-lying island nations why you "just can't help yourself" but to flood their homes because you can't sit still.

[–] Goldmage263@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, that doesn't happen because of me. You can keep trying to shame me as an outlet for your anger from the ultra-wealthy and large businesses if that makes you feel better.

Unprofessional opinion tho, trying to make yourself feel more morally correct because you have different needs or can't access them isn't the healthiest way to express these feelings.

The average Joe is not accountable for any meaningful amount of pollution until after the private jets are prohibited. My city does what it can with local ordinance, and I do what I can to contribute to carbon neutral initiatives. Reduce has been the big focus this year. I'm thankful to have a place to bring my own bottles for soap, shampoo, laudry detergent, deodrant bars, and such.

You judge people before trying to know them and ask questions. Your assumptions hold you back.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You're right in that the average Joe isn't the most accountable, but the average Joe can hurt the companies and people who ARE most accountable. That means not indulging them, and definitely not giving them money.

And so you have beef with my habits because... I don't know. I'm still trying to connect how me using an AirBnB maybe once a year within the USA not in Tourism cities is related to giving non-citizen landowners of foreign properties money.

Are you saying because I use AirBnB at all it is benefiting that group of scalpers? That sounds like saying using ebay helps scalpers and you shouldn't ever use ebay because of that. I don't see/agree with that connection.

Have you never chosen to boycott a company before? I won't go to Chick-fil-A for any reason. It doesn't matter if the franchisee holds the exact same level of hatred for lgbtq+. The fact that it isn't a disqualifier is enough for me. Not all MAGAts are pedophiles but the fact that they can excuse it for other reasons in their head means I don't fucking talk to those people. So yeah, you giving money to horrible people makes me think of you a certain way.

That's a fine conclusion, I don't expect us to agree after all. I think I better understand where you are at after all this conversation. Thank you for having it with me. You are going for abstaining. My big focus has been reduction. I do need to travel or my mental state just gets bad. It doesn't help that I'm stuck living in this state via a multi-year contract.

And as for boycotting, only a few places completely; Chick-fil-A, Hobby Lobby, and many other places. The rest is significant reduction. WalMart, Amazon, McDonalds, etc I will use rarely (maybe twice a year) and have been funneling a lot more of my finances to the local grocery Co-Op that primarily stocks local farm goods, Etsy, and locally owned restaurants. Similar to not adopting veganism, but eating a lot less beef, adding in vegetarian meals, and mostly going with fish for protein.

I support as much local as I can afford to, and that is more than I can ask for from others. Intentions matter more to me than the rest, because it can be worked with. Hope you have a great day!

That's fair I often go a little too hardcore in my boycotts, and realize I'm left with little to no options in picking up something I need. No Walmart, no Menards, no amazon, and try to avoid target, luckily I've found a few small shops around town that I didn't know existed, simply cause I had to find some things for the house.

Once while driving through the middle of nowhere I found myself getting hungry and all they had was a McDonald's and a dumpy looking gas station. So I passed on and wound up regretting it cause the next town of any significant size was nearly 80 miles away and I found myself getting lightheaded and my vision started getting hazy. Luckily I passed a town with a clean looking gas station before I got to the bigger town and I discovered the magic that is Casey's pizza.

[–] Goldmage263@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The correct answer isn't left for us to easily choose, but Casey's pizza is one of those cboices. I'd reccomend trying the breakfast pizza with gravy sauce if you have an opportunity sometime.

Keep fighting your fight, and I'll keep pushing on mine. I'm getting close to helping some coworkers see how the economy they voted for is getting worse. I wish I could make basic human rights be more important to them, but The Machine is built to counter that specifically. I'll take what I can get.

I've been doing that at work as well. Older Gen x types that don't follow the news much. Right leaning but not far right are usually the highest success ratio for me. "Hey did you see they're doing _______, crazy"
