Literal NPCs, and what's even the purpose?
Sounds like something that would be described in Das Kapital or Bullshit Jobs.
Metas new strategy is to join the game late and do the worst job possible
That's been their strategy for at least a decade
I can tell you from first-hand experience who this appeals to: Rich capitalists who are obsessed with any tech that looks remotely futuristic but do not have the slightest clue how anything works or what it actually does.
This, like 99% of AI services, is not made to appeal to consumers, it's made to grift investors. It's made to blow confetti into their eyes and go "Ooooh look, it's just like a human, it's the future!"
The tech industry does not want to admit that progress is slowing down, so they've pivoted to selling tech that doesn't exist yet. And again, I can tell you from first-hand experience that it's working perfectly. Rich capitalists are falling for this dumb charade hook, line and sinker. They fell for it during the crypto/NFT mania, they fell for it during the metaverse hype and oh my god are they falling for every AI snake oil salesman.
You know how these niche groups found each other thanks to the internet? What happens if you can't find other people like you? They invent them. So now your social media bubble isn't so lonely.
Wondering if their metrics are showing massive user dropoff and this is to fake engagement so people think it's worth it to keep posting.
