there is already a local two bit celebrity ready to lead lol. Can look into Rabi Lamichhane

Dude came straight from US (some talk about him fleeing US due to debt) and even managed to enter political. Even managed to become home minister (under Prachanda's) for a while but he really angered the establishment (KP Oli, Sher Bahadur) since he claimed to bring change, development, and every other buzz word. His would platform was the old system was corrupt and it needs to change.

He was 100% just an opportunistic that pissed off wrong people in wrong time. He is also neck deep in many many scandals and was in prison until yesterday. Now he would have been the perfect person with everyone's support behind him but ironically his greatest achievement of getting the Home Minister position has lead to suspicion and distrust, since it showed his willingness to coexist with thr establishment. Now people just want him back in jail since the charges all seems legit.

Also think he is suspicion af, maybe not related CIA but won't hesitate to sell out

So, like, about this Nepal shit, is the ban on social media thing because the platforms aren't following whatever law the government passed, like in brazil a few months ago?

something like that but the ban was just a part of series of event that made Nepal explode.

then fuck this whole movement?

well kind of, i dont know how to go about the movement. Its good in part where the ossified political establishment is purged, and bad because there was no real movement or purpose other that removing the political establishment. This not a revolutionary movement that should be cheered on or a color revolution to be condemned. People were angry, they have been angry and all the photo and videos of dead children made it so that no one came in their defense.

Literally these kids, myself included, could and should go without this shit

yeah they should, and if it was only about social media ban then people will just use VPNs until things got sorted out. They will be annoyed but not ready to die for it.

everything is mostly over now, the line between protesters and mob were blurred in the end hours when governmental building were targeted like supreme courts, National banks, etc

The rage had been specifically against the elite and their properties during the day so the sudden shift in target at the end was very suspicious. It was immediately condemned by the people with several conspiracies floating around about who was behind the attack. felt like mob were going after court, custom office, etc and destroying documents and other evidence deliberately. Currently the Maoist are being blamed for the destruction since they suffered the least damage. Some of it might be even true, just because they called themselves 'Maoist' doesn't mean they are in principle.

Luckily the chaos didn't last long. Nepal army was deployed at 10 pm and order was quickly restored. The suspicion of some foreign power suddenly hijacking the entire thing is entirety valid but don't think thats the case. The army patrolling the street might make it seem scary but they are just providing support. Their arrival made it so that people can sleep in peace.

Yeah just the ban on WhatsApp and messenger might not have been so bad since alternative chatapp like Viber still works but there wasn't a real alternative to YouTube, Reddit and Facebook like platform.

Even tho they aren't directly used for communication, most people are still dependent on them for news, information and entertainment

The two largest parties are no more and Maoist were the third largest have been mostly intact

[–] xarm@hexbear.net 1 points 7 hours ago

The Maoist had been a major power before but it slowly lost support due to its inability to really do anything.

It fell victim to the usual electoralism and political game.

Even though KP Oli is the chairman of United Marxist Leninist, he hasn't studied Marxism at all. The UML and Maoist had been merged to form Nepal Communist Party but was split after internal conflict.

More on the internal conflict

The mayor of Kathmandu is popular all over Nepal due to him acting on his promises. The major before him had all been affiliated with one party or another with nothing ever being done. The majority of his supporters are in Kathmandu and surrounding areas but his action has lead other metropolitan improving urban conditions.

There is an adjacent political party along with the major consisting of independent candidates called National Independence Party but its president is neck deep in controversies and was in prison until yesterday. Its very suspicious and isn't really trusted now.

Now him leading the interim government will be fine by people and perhaps will gain enough support in next election to form a proper base.

I know Maoist Centre is in opposition in the government. Do you think they're in a position to take advantage of this? Are they any good? I know Prachanda has been involved in a lot of controversies, is he still synonymous with the Maoist Centre?

Yeah Prachanda had been playing both NC and UML and managed to stay in power with his third largest party but it had big difference compared to first and second, that is until he started investigation upon the NC and UML parties elite plus other factors, after which he was sidelined and NC and UML formed a coalition government . He represent Maoist Centre but it is dangerous for him to appear right now. Even though he doesnt like it, he is a part of the establishment now and people do not like him anymore. really not his fault but he failed to really do anything. His party suffered the fewest damage, as only his house got burned down today i think. He also seems to be out the picture and with him the Maoist center.

yes thats exactly what happened. The left is removed from the National governance, even though it was present only in name. But its not all over, there are communist parties still around which had not managed to gain much support due to the sheer dominance of the former three big parties. Maybe now that the entire landscape is shifted, they will rise to the occasion. Well, that is what i hope. But even the concept of 'political party' has been frowned upon here and independent candidates were rising in recent time.

[–] xarm@hexbear.net 28 points 22 hours ago

It was ratified by Nepal’s then-Communist Party coalition led parliament (Maoist-Centre and United-Socialist) in 2022.

thank you for reminding that. I felt some pity on how Sher Bahadur, under whom MCC was accepted, was treated today but damn had forgotten how he fucked over all of us with that MCC. There was a huge protest organized by the left against that but then the government acted like it was not going to rectify that, then started a dance in a parliament and passed it anyway. The history of Nepali government just weathering through public anger but not giving any consideration is long one.

[–] xarm@hexbear.net 24 points 22 hours ago

it could go in either direction, no one knows

related to this

There will probably be an interim government headed by a 'populist' leader who is currently the mayor of Kathmandu Municipality. At least thats what people are demanding. 'populist' in a sense like someone running in platform of change and improvement, not related to current establishment and is an independent candidate. and has done a lot of good so is very popular in the capital city.

The government's top brass has all been purged with no one left to take power. What should we focus on to prevent the same cycle of liberal governance -> move to right -> revolution once again?

There was no organization and leadership in the current protest, everything was spontaneous so felt like it would be an easy target for bad actors to take over the current momentum.

so any advice and recommendation of materials on moment after 'revolution' ? also the problem, limitation and enemies we face. Only the political leadership has been over-thrown but the ruling class still control the economic power. I guess only their investment in the political candidates are down the drain.
