I have a startling revelation. Upon closer inspection it was a piece of wood.

I have lied to you all.

That's a matter of perspective, I suppose. We've been doing it for about ten years so our vibe, sound, and structure have improved in that time. Not to mention equipment upgrades.

I'd say pick a topic you enjoy and start there, but I don't think there's a wrong route. But if it's super early and we sound bad maybe give a newer show a shot lol

We talk about what we've been playing that week and retro relevant news stuff. We put the timestamp in for those that want to get right to the point.

You don't have to, you can just look at this one. It's a visual experience.

[–] bluelander@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 months ago

Yeah I'm not sure that would fit under my tv either lol

[–] bluelander@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 months ago

A million times this. Retro games aren't just still good, they're better than they've ever been thanks to modern tools and emulation.

I have an i5 with a 1660Ti hooked up to this same tv. And an i9/4080RTX laptop that I do I lot of gaming on. Also a Steam Deck to the right of the Xbox.

I just thought it was cute and fun :)

Yeah, it's not perfect. But it's cute and adds some flair and I'm enjoying it regardless of the exactness of its historical accuracy. Still nicer than another black rectangle under my tv. From 12+ feet away it looks identifiably like "sort of like an old PC case," which is enough for how cheap it was.

REMINISCENCE across the bottom kills me 😆

Device itself look okay, but I struggle to pick anything up until I know for a fact that the CFW scene is going to be robust and worthwhile. Once I know what kind of firmware I'll be rocking and that it'll be supported by the community I'm a thousand times more likely to grab one. Until then it's just the waiting game.

I'm guilty of tossing plenty of stuff out over the years. So many boxes full of boxes, eventually the downsizing bug bites and I need to separate wheat from chaff.

But the idea that people pretend to have no idea that those things adds to the value confuses me as well. I'm also perpetually confused that people don't understand the difference between something being listed for an amount and something selling for an amount. Anyone can list anything they want for any amount, but that doesn't mean other people are buying it! I could list my copy of Low G Man for 10 billion dollars if I want to, but it's sure as heck not worth that.

Just wanted to share my old retro game cart I built several years ago in my old house. I eventually moved to (mostly) emulation for convenience and because the cart didn't get used enough to justify the effort and space that it required. But for a few glorious years there it was pretty cool!

Anyone built out a movable gaming cart like this for your retro stuff?

So I've run my own show for just about ten years now. We've never had ads or sponsorships of any kind other than a Patreon plug at the very end.

When I go out into the world and listen to other podcasts I'm perpetually annoyed at the lengthy, frequent ad-breaks. I don't mind being reminded to engage or click on their link or go to a show's Ko-Fi page, but a two minute dollar shave club or AG1 ad is just too much. And, honestly, the amount of advertising dollars some shows take makes me question their integrity just a bit. I know it might be a bit old-fashioned to think that, but I can't help it.

What are you favorite sponsorship-free, ad-free podcasts?

CLARIFICATION EDIT: So, to clarify because it keeps coming up: I'm looking for shows with no ads and that are not on platforms that serve ads during the show in question. To me, in my mind, a podcast is an MP3, which is how I listen to them. They get downloaded and put onto an MP3 player.

I don't watch podcasts on YouTube, and generally try to limit my time on platforms like that in general (although I find it nearly impossible to do so fully). I'm aware that some shows have ad-free versions if you access them via paid fees or behind other subscriptions models, but I'm looking for truly ad-free MP3 audio experiences. Thanks for all the recs so far! I've already compiled quite a list, so keep 'em coming!

Taken with my Nikon Coolpix S51 (in pink).

Anbernic RGP35XXSP on the left sporting MuOS. Fits just fine in my original GBA case!

On the right is my Miyoo Mini+ in a 3D printed hard case (from Etsy) running OnionOS.

The Anbernic is quickly becoming my go-to due to the RTC, which makes Pokemon games easier to enjoy. And being able to just flip the lid shut to sleep and power off after ten minutes is very nice. But I still vastly prefer the UI of OnionOS on the MM+.

What's everyone else carrying these days?

Hope self-promotion is allowed. This is the latest episode of my podcast! We don't have ads or sponsorships of any kid so you can keep the thumb off that 10-second skip button :)

Any WonderSwan fans here?
