just to avoid misunderstandings, I assume the final >french accent lemmy wont show< in your code is lemmy code and you forgot to type the >french accent lemmy wont show< at the beginning of the command, right? because the one without the >french accent lemmy wont show< returns -bash: update-initramfs: command not found

incidentally, another member suggested I run sudo dpkg-reconfigure initramfs-tools

it returns:

update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated) Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.148.3) ... update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.12.41+deb13-amd64 zstd: error 70 : Write error : cannot write block : No space left on device E: mkinitramfs failure cpio 141 E: mkinitramfs failure zstd -q -9 -T0 70 update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-6.12.41+deb13-amd64 with 1. dpkg: error processing package initramfs-tools (--configure): installed initramfs-tools package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: initramfs-tools

but this is something I don't understand. I deleted 6 old kernels already. There are only 3 left.

After checking KDE Partition Manager for /boot and /boot/efi both have free space left:

/boot size: 488 MiB

/boot used: 396.26 MiB

/boot/efi size: 512 MiB

/boot/efi used: 10.52 MiB

sorry, typed that wrong, debian 12.11

[–] arsus5478@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I listed all installed kernels:

dpkg -l | grep linux-image | awk '{print$2}'

then removed several old kernels:

sudo apt remove --purge linux-image-XXX

then updated grub:

sudo update-grub2

thanks. I did all that. Is it safe to reboot? don't want to ruin the machine

[–] arsus5478@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

if by fresh install you mean nuking the old partitions and installing brand new 13.0 from an usb stick no, this is not a fresh install, fresh as in just now installed

I am running trixie

in /etc/apt/sources.list.d there is only one txt file named debian.sources, as explained in debian's instructions page. Is that wyat you mean?

I also updated grub after freeing some boot space: sudo update-grub2

upgraded from 12.11 to 13.0. I just deleted some old kernels and freed some space in the boot partition. Could this be the reason? not enough free boot space?

[–] arsus5478@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago (7 children)

would you help the noob here and explain how to do that?

per my previous post I completed the upgrade to 13.0, including the 900 files I didn't get to download and install after using sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

I now have a working internet connection using a lan cable.

More important than this wlan/lan issue is this new one: each time I try to update/upgrade with either sudo apt --fix-broken install , sudo apt full-upgrade , sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y I get:

`Summary:

[–] arsus5478@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

nmcli returns command not found

sudo systemctl status NetworkManager.service returns: unit NetworkManager.service could not be found.

Seems I dont have that one either

I edited the new debian.sources file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d according to debian instructions, started to upgrade and successfuly upgraded to 13.0, at least core debian (can use mpv, vlc, thunar, libreoffice...)

Problem is, this notebook with debian 13.0 doesnt have a working network manager and there are still 900 packages that need upgrading.

The command I entered in the terminal: sudo systemctl status NetworkManager.service returns: unit NetworkManager.service could not be found.

I have an android phone I thought I could use as a network hotspot or maybe tether, but debian 13.0 doesnt recognize it, so I really dont know what to do

Lan cable didnt work either.

Help appreciated

ETA: THANK YOU GUYS FOR YOUR AWESOME HELP!!!

special thanks to InnerScientist and stuner for their approach but what worked was what IHave69XiBucks proposed.
