Are you sure? I would expect AMD to have their own download & install instructions that could be used on any distro

Oh you don't have to do anything like that for everything else, because it is just in the kernel and in mesa... This "pro" driver comes with some custom stuff like apparently their proprietary encoders, but I read multiple times that it has just terrible performance for everything else so don't bother...

By rips, do you mean your source media is already in a container, like a .mkv or .mp4 file?

yes mkv files

you might take a look at MVKToolNix

I will :)

HandBrake supports AMD VCN hardware video encoding

yes, but that is not viable as the amdgpu-pro drivers are only available on LTS releases and on a few selected distros

You haven't said what source material you're encoding

Mostly BluRay rips, so movies and TV-Shows

Are you aware of Vulkan Video?

I actually was not. Is it any good? But Handbrake does not support that either, does it?

you might consider investing some time in learning ffmpeg commands.

I am, but for anything involving multiple audio and subtitle streams and stream selection in general it is not an option for me...

[–] BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de 1 points 3 weeks ago

Never heard of it, but it looks very intimidating 😅

With handling all the subtitles and audio streams I really prefer a GUI especially since it is not a one size fits all with the files I am dealing with

I recently switched to an AMD GPU and VA-API is the only option for hardware acceleration on linux that is viable. But Handbrake does not support it and it doesn't seem like it will in the foreseeable future, so I am looking for an alternative. Ideally it is just an ffmpeg GUI, but I did not find any that are:

  • actually compatible with linux
  • updated in the last 5 years
  • have an option vor h264_vaapi or hevc_vaapi video codecs

Another workflow I thought about that is not working is transcoding the video, but copy all audio and subtitles and let handbrake handle that, however Handbrake has no option to just copy the video stream...

So far I have tried:

  • ffmpeg_batch: wouldn't use my local version of ffmpeg, because of some path error, only works through wine
  • qwinff: got it building, but no VA-API codec, and no mkv output support (over 10 years old)
  • Shutter Encoder: only works through wine, font problems, no va-api support
  • Avidemux: takes forever to open a video clip, more of a video editor, no va-api support
  • Hybrid: know it from my windows days, clunky UI, no va-api support, but best candidate for me right now as I could use it to just copy video and handle audio and subtitles in here
  • StaxRip: the .7z file could not be extracted, I just got an error

Any ideas or suggestions?

I had a similar, but not as bad situation with my power button (it was just stuck sometimes, causing restarts and what not). I regularly waited 2-4 weeks for a reply... So yeah customer service is really bad at the moment... Still love the product, though

they are already actively working with e/OS and iodéOS. Don't know if e/OS already supports Android 15 like iodé does, but they could just focus on that next release...

[–] BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I own a FP4 and I've been on Android 15 for a while now, as I run iodéOS ... To me it is astonishing how a thrid party OS can have better support than the first party one 😅

After thinking about it I think this has actually nothing to do with Firefox (yet), but with the ad platform they bought. Might absolutely end up in Firefox in some way, but this blog post is not about that...

[–] BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Why do they continue to want to shove ads down their users throat? I use FF so uBlock Origin works and can block everything that annoys me...

[–] BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de 4 points 2 months ago

I used to use OnlyOffice, but switched to Nextcloud office because I like the UI and the documentserver better. Easier administering and the official solution

[–] BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de 8 points 3 months ago

I fullheartedly agree... My mbin servers have been targeted multiple times by stupid AI scraper bots and even google didn't adhere to the request limit set in the robots.txt...

[–] BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de 5 points 3 months ago

Didn't know that, but it seems like they have not posted anything since May 2023

Critics said the new terms implied Mozilla was asking users for the rights to whatever data they input or upload through Firefox.

I have been using the "Teams For Linux" flathub app for a few days and at first I celebrated, because I could finally use teams without major workarounds and so that it just works. However today it decided to crash my audio device after about 20 minutes and it did so consistently... It crashes it so hard, that I need to restart my system every time it occurrs...

Things that do not work to get my audio back up and running:

  • restarting pipewire service with systemctl --user restart pipewire.service
  • restarting pipewire-pulse with systemctl --user restart pipewire-pulse.service
  • restarting alsa with sudo alsactl -F restore
  • relogging
  • unplugging USB

I am using Fedora 41 and my audio interface is the Motu M2

As far as I can tell the audio is just broken beyond repair and I have no idea why. I've always had audio problems on linux, but never to this degree. Maybe I have to try another distro, but I actually don't really want to. It is just super annoying and if anyone has an idea how to fix this mess I will try it and hope that it works :D

Is there a fediverse review platform for movies, booksbooks and the like? Could be very cool imo

The biggest surprise for me was the https://hexbear.net count, an instance I hardly interact with.

I recently tried to implement push notifications, but it does not seem like fennec is supporting them. The same code works fine on vanilla firefox on mobile, Librewolf and Firefox on desktop.

Does anyone know whether Fennec should support push notifications?

I've been thinking of getting that game, though I am not sure on the development pace and state it is currently in.

Generally I love city builders of any kind and the game looks super interesting to me (and it is currently on sale :D ). What are your thoughts?

I am running Fedora 39 right now and the last time I did a distro upgrade my graphics drivers were a huge PITA. Did your upgrade to 40 went smooth?

Hello everyone, I have a weird problem with my mouse: when I switch the window focus, e.g. by alt tabbing to another window, or by closing a window, and the newly focused window is on my other monitor my mouse will jump to that monitor without me doing anything. It is not a deal breaker or something, but it is very annoying...

I am using Fedora 39 with Gnome 45 with xorg, nvidia 2070 super, running the nvidia drivers and a Ryzen 3600.

I looked in my control center for mouse options, but they are very much limited

Mozilla Firefox should gear up as an excellent option for power users and productivity enthusiasts with this feature.

I would be so happy if this feature makes it into Firefox this year

I am thinking of extending my storage and I don't know if I should buy a JBOD (my current solution) or a RAID capable enclosure.

My "server" is just a small intel nuc with an 8th gen i3. I am happy with the performance, but that might be impacted by a bigger software RAID setup. My current storage setup is a 4-bay JBOD with 4TB drives in RAID 5. And I am thinking of going to 6 x 8TB drives with RAID 6 which will probably be more work for my little CPU
