I think it could be productive to not think of him as dumb, but as being taken advantage of by people with their own interests in mind. We are all humans and it's easy to see the other as different, but I think we are way more similar than we are distinct and as a relative, coming at it with empathy and maybe humor could bring the heat of the conversation down a couple of notches.
