Wait... Shrek came out 24 years ago? Not five?

Welp, looks like I got more than one foot in the grave.

Well, the years start comin' and they don't stop comin'

[–] Digit@lemmy.wtf 19 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Shrek...?

Really?

That's what you mark 2001 by???

[–] Draedron@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

What else would they use? Tomb Raider?

[–] Digit@lemmy.wtf 8 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

How about September 10th, when 2.3 Trillion dollars were announced missing...

... Or what happened the very next day.

[–] beernutz@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

I thought that was more of an issue with bad accounting software, not simply "missing" money.

[–] Digit@lemmy.wtf 1 points 2 hours ago

Easy to suspect it neither.

[–] Bgugi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

They were also not announced on the tenth, they were mentioned on the tenth, after being announced in February 2020

That movie crashed box office records and left a giant crater where Disney princess movies used to be. What else that year could be more impactful?

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 16 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

The release of super smash Bros melee.

[–] Nangijala@feddit.dk 10 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

For me it is trippy to know that all the little kids I looked after when I was 20 are now 20 themselves.

[–] burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 hours ago

Yeah, kids that I taught in kindergarten have now graduated. It's definitely strange.

I did my first babysitting gigs at age 13, in 2002.

I vividly remember playing dolls with my neighbor’s daughter. She just had her first baby about a month ago.

Sometimes I forget how old I am. Then I do something like “going too long without eating,” or “sleeping on the same side for too long” and it’s like my body full-on revolts against me. Sigh.

I feel you. I'm born in '87, but I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

That is such a perfect metaphor, I may have to steal it.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Ha, guess you're not a LotR fan then. It's one of the phrases from the book that folks quote often, I think mainly tongue in cheek, because it's phrased a little funny. But it definitely carries meaning for sure.

Wait till our descendants will refer to 90s as ancient times of the Internet.

[–] zipsglacier@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

My 11yo asked me if I was born in "the nineteen's"... Yes child, some of the people from that era are still alive today.

Vampire spotted. 🙃

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Pfft that was barely 10 years ago

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago

The new grads at work already do this. Bunch of gen zs who categorize themselves by who was both in the 90 vs 00s

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 33 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

Kid at work doesn't know what a collect call is.

[–] hash@slrpnk.net 10 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Bruh I barely do and I'm a 25 year old techy. I'm sorry, you're old.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

I'm sorry I'm old, too

[–] PlexSheep@infosec.pub 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I'm 22, no idea what it is

[–] frog_brawler@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Once upon a time, instead of putting a quarter into a payphone you could dial 1-800-collect (there were many options) and after that call someone else and make them pay for the call instead.

The kids might not know what a “payphone” is either.

“Would you like to accept a collect call from HEY MOM CAN YOU COME PICK ME UP”

I only know it from American movies, because it was never a thing were I live.
