The original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy with the original cast slaps. I forgot how good those films were until I rewatched them over lockdowns but they all hold up super well. So, any one of those movies.

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

Yeah all of the other are great but Pirates of the caribean is by far the best movie about pirates.

You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

"Have you ever considered piracy? You'd make a wonderful Dread Pirate Roberts."

Oh yeah I totaly forgot about that movie, now the memories come flooding in.

That was back in the days when you had brutal kids movie. Caption killing his crew, I think they tortured a few muppets etc.. But it has fun songs so it was all good.

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 49 points 1 year ago (4 children)

I’m going to go with Hook.

It’s not as seminal to pirate movie lore as the 1950 Treasure Island or the Pirates Of The Caribbean series, but it’s just a great funny, touching movie.

Well now that song’s stuck in my head

I still say "Rufio! Rufio!" almost every time I see a picture or mention of Dante Brasco, which is more frequently than you might think since ATLA is one of my comfort/background shows.

Somehow nobody has mentioned Pirates of the Caribbean yet, so I will. They’re stupid movies, but they’re also incredibly entertaining, and the special effects (2 + 3 especially) hold up incredibly well.

[–] Pfnic@feddit.ch 24 points 1 year ago

Also the soundtrack is just amazing

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I still regularly watch the first three as a dumb fun action trilogy.

Also, yes; Davy Jones is the best CGI to be put onscreen since probably ever.

[–] narwhalperson@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agreed. Also, I think it was quite the power move to have a character so evil that they cut out their own heart, then made the actual villain a tiny British man who embodies capitalism.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think it was that he was so evil, he was so hurt and betrayed by Calypso.

I actually kinda like Cutler Beckett as the true villain. He represents the world at large and the turn of the century, the literal end of the age of piracy. And you have this ragtag group of murderers and miscreants trying to stand up for their way of life.

It's all framed as a heroic last stand, of course.

[–] narwhalperson@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

No, I agree. I liked the decision to not have Davy jones be entirely villainous. Although I did take issue with the inconsistency of the story later on. Like, if Jones can stand in a bucket of sea water to go on land, then can’t he just fill some sealed shoes with water and walk on land? It’s all rather ambiguous.

People have said the pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. I want to specifically call out the first movie. It was a pure love letter to old pirate movies, and you get to see Jack sparrow actually be clever and serious, before he was flanderized into funny dirt jar man. The two sequels are fun, but each one took a notable drop in character writing for cheap gags.

[–] amki@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's basically the same thing that happened to Homer Simpson. The original did dumb things but never intended for things to fail or to be evil. Of course it is easier to write cheap gags if you throw all of that out of the window.

[–] ours@lemmy.film 8 points 1 year ago

"Flanderize" refers directly to a Simpsons character (Ned Flander).

There was a movie that was just called 'Pirates,' don't know if it was any good though..

[–] Chef_Boyargee@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That may be the porn/softcore flick by Digital Playground and Adam & Eve, circa 2005. Was a solid renter at the video store I ran. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477457/

Captain Phillips

[–] Spendrill@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. As with The Matrix it's a pity that they never made any sequels.

If you like a pirate {and what right thinking person doesn't?) then you should click this link to the Internet Archive to watch Captain Kidd with Charles Laughton having any amount of fun as magnificent bastard William Kidd.

[–] baronvonj@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Some good responses in here, so I'll add The Pirate Movie.

[–] AngryHumanoid@reddthat.com 3 points 1 year ago

I know it will get a lot of laughs now, but I unironically love the final song.

[–] burningmatches@feddit.uk 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yellowbeard. Starring Peter Cook, most of Monty Python, Cheech and Chong, Marty Feldman, Spike Milligan… what’s not to love?
