I really hope we can all just collectively agree that we as a nation will never convict anyone by jury for crimes against ICE, no matter what they are. Trump is weaponizing the pardon, we can weaponize the jury trial right back at him.

If I were a juror I’d nullify, and then subsequently consider suing the state for involving me in a frivolous lawsuit that financial harmed me.

[–] SacralPlexus@lemmy.world 45 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I’m just noticing that the media doesn’t have to use the passive voice about criminal allegations when it decides not to.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Ooh lemme try my hand at this

"Investigation opened after government agent allegedly struck by flying culinary shrapnel, motive unknown"

[–] Rekhyt@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't think it's a question whether or not he threw the sandwich, just whether or not that's assault...

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

And pepper too. If you’re feeling especially spicy, throw in some oregano.

[–] DBT@lemmy.world 49 points 3 days ago (4 children)

A jury trial for throwing a sandwich?

If they’re gonna overreact maybe make sure you’re getting your money’s worth, huh?

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 36 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Exactly. They’re gonna put this guy on trial, and it’s just gonna remind everyone how cool he is and what clowns the feds are.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 16 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Lawyer: And then what did you do?

Defendant on stand: And then I threw my sandwich at him.

Jury: fuck yeah

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Jury: fuck yeah

Followed by a few fist pumps.

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

He looked hungry; I was trying to feed him so he could continue using his hands to molest and assault innocent people.

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 28 points 3 days ago

Remember that they tried indicting him with a felony and grand juries refused to indict him multiple times. Now they are trying to use this misdemeanor trial to make an example out of him but I have a feeling it will backfire spectacularly.

[–] regedit@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They went through like 3 grand juries before finding any that would indict.

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 13 points 3 days ago

Hell yes a jury trial. I assume the defendant requested it. After all, they couldn't convince a grand jury to indict him so there's every chance a petite jury will let him off too. But they are desperate to get some sort of conviction so they are wasting pile of money on this.

Jury nullification

[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So if throwing a sandwich at a police officer is a serious crime, there must be a backlog in the courts from all the shit nurses have to put up with on a regular shift for half the pay, eh? Police and ICE are the biggest, softest little crybabies there are in this world. And I'm including actual babies in that stat.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Well to be fair to the babies, they are like 1/100th the volume of these guys.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

Oh, I'd so love to be on that jury. Jury nullification, BABY.

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 29 points 3 days ago (6 children)

What is he charged with? Assault with a tasty weapon?

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 14 points 3 days ago

Yeeting a succulent sandwich!

[–] mister_flibble@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Assault with a breadly weapon

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Assault with a deli weapon.

[–] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 days ago

I think it was Subway, so tasty isn't how I would personally describe it.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Aggravated butthurt.

K-19, the Sandwich maker?

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 21 points 3 days ago

Prosecutors hit Dunn with a misdemeanor assault charge in August. That came a day after U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office failed to persuade a grand jury to indict Dunn on felony charges — a sub -optimal result for prosecutors.

We the jury find the defendant guilty of wasting a perfectly good sandwich, when samples of dog poop were readily available for throwing at fascists.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Such a waste

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 15 points 3 days ago

Let's compare that to those "tourist" on Jan 6.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 days ago

What is the charge? Sharing a meal? A succulent salami meal?

[–] IamSparticles@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Federal prosecutors opposed Dunn’s lawyers’ motion to dismiss the charge, writing that Dunn was “recorded throwing a sandwich at a federal officer at point-blank range.”

As we all know, the damage fall-off for a comestible projectile is pretty drastic, so the fact that it was "point-blank range" is a really meaningful detail, and definitely not meant to just be inflammatory.

Oh, also:

Since then, “sandwich guy” has become a bread-and-butter part of D.C.’s resistance to the president.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I should buy some salami sandwiches. To share.

New lunch special - salami sub, "soup for my family", and a twisted tea

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I thought the grand jury refused to indict like 3 times.

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You're remembering correctly, but grand jury indictments are only required for felony charges not misdemeanors. Way less serious charge than they were trying for originally, but if he's unlucky enough to get 12 scumbags on his jury he could still end up being fined or doing a few months in jail.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 3 points 2 days ago

Ah, good to know that they didn't manage to force through felony charges.

[–] 1985MustangCobra@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

what a waste of a panino.
