Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Regardless of all other considerations, Israel should be removed given the highly suspicious voting that got Israel to first place. In the public vote and second place overall. Israel's song was mediocre and barely registered during the contest, got mediocre scores from the professional judges, and it was not a commercial success before or after the contest, and yet somehow it won the popular vote.

If Israel had won it would have done permanent damage to the Eirovision song contest as there is strong suspicion the vote was rigged. People can vote up to 20 times so it is feasible to manipulate the vote at relatively low cost if focused in a few countries.

While I agree with removing Israel, purely political voting is nothing new for the ESC. Ukraine winning in 2022 wasn't because of the song either.

Political voting is not new but the votes Israel got were weird. Spain is very critical of Israel. They had a massive protest right before or after ESC, and then somehow the popular vote gave Israel 12 points? Spain is the only one I remember from the top of my head but there were something like 4-5 countries in a similar scenario, where the people don't like Israel but somehow end up giving either 12 or 10 points to Isreal.

This happening with one country could be viewed as just a coincidence but when the same thing happens to multiple countries?

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It doesn't need a majority of people supporting Israel, just enough people who feel strongly about the topic. Even in countries where a majority of people are against Israel, millions do still support them and they may feel even stronger about it if their government is against them.

Supporters of Israel had a way to express their support on the ESC, while supporters of Palestine didn't, as Palestine didn't participate in the contest. So you only got political votes from one side of the conflict, while the remaining votes were spread out over any of the other countries. No conspiracy needed, although I will admit it's possible.

[–] Goodeye8@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And in your opinion how much of the population percentage-wise would be "enough people who feel strongly about the topic" for Israel to get the most points?

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I couldn't tell you an exact number but I'd say that taking these polls, the 12% who say Israel was justified in everything they did would well be enough.

[–] Goodeye8@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And with 12% every voter would've had to vote at least twice with a portion needing to vote at least thrice for Israel to get first place. Do you think all of them are so devoted they'd all vote multiple times? The Spanish broadcast didn't think so which is why they asked for a full breakdown and they weren't given that.

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And with 12% every voter would’ve had to vote at least twice with a portion needing to vote at least thrice for Israel to get first place.

Only if there were an even proportion of ESC-voters across Spain's population, which I see no reason to assume. People with a political motive are more motivated to vote than everyone else who might not have cared for any of the songs and thus not voted at all.

[–] Goodeye8@piefed.social -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I see no reason to assume the proportions would somehow be different. Or am I supposed to assume that politically motivated people are more likely to vote in Eurovision? I would argue it's been taken into consideration by the assumption that 100% of that 12% would vote. And just to reiterate, for Israel to get maximum points 100% of the 12% had to vote at least twice or more than 24% (and that's the low end of what Israel would have to get to be first) of all the votes had to go to Israel.

And finally, Eurovision could've easily silenced all skeptics by releasing the full breakdown of votes. I'll leave it up to you to decide why they didn't release the full breakdown (and no, it's not because it's a secret because Italy reveals their voting percentages).

If that's what you want to assume, ok. I think we're past the point of useful discussion here, as neither of us can back up our assumptions.

An austrian dude supporting fascim and genocide. Seems familiar...

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Did he also fail to get admitted to an art school?

He was more than good enough for the Eurovision.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

No but his Pinterest boards never get the recognition they deserve

[–] MBM@lemmings.world 3 points 1 week ago

Hey now, it's not just Austria. Germany's chancellor made the same statement

An Austrian leader, even...

[–] 20cello@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

Israel must fuck off, regardless of any consequences

[–] sabreW4K3@lazysoci.al 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They're not even in Europe, kicking them out shouldn't be controversial normally, let alone when they've been committing genocide and are breaking ceasefires.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

This is a classic comment for this discussion. The eurovision is not a contest among european countries. It is a contest among the members of the EBU. ~~Any~~ Many countries (outside of Europe) can become a member of that if they want

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago (4 children)

One beneficial way to avoid controversy and raise IQ levels across Europe would be to cancel Eurovision altogether.

How dare people have fun, amirite folks?

[–] Samskara@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You’re advocating for canceling the most mainstream and biggest queer friendly event in Europe?

[–] TheEntity@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (3 children)

It can be both queer friendly and pure brainrot at the same time, these are not mutually exclusive.

[–] Denjin@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago

Just because you don't like the music, doesn't make it brain rot.

You say brainrot like it's something bad.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

Oh shit if it's queer friendly it's obviously good!

[–] qevlarr@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Let people enjoy things?

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Although that is not likelly, I think that something along those lines may be the approach they chose to solve this. Find a way to have Israel excluded, but not directly say it is because of the war and genocide.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 10 points 1 week ago

Yes, wouldn’t want to make people upset. About genocide. And purposely killing children.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 3 points 1 week ago

Russia was banned for a war. Israel should be banned for a genocide.

[–] RockBottom@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why? The mid east could make their own contest.

[–] genau@europe.pub 3 points 1 week ago

That would be fun to watch.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

Austrian leader

Haha, I see what you did there, dpa!

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Just don't do anything with those fuckers. Don't let them participate, stop buying their shit (yesterday I saw israeli grapefruit in a shop). Same as you wouldn't do any business with the other, old time nazis.
