I've seen lots of posts about the ad, but not the ad itself. Here it is.

streisand effect

[–] MyDogLovesMe@lemmy.world 31 points 1 week ago (5 children)

It wasn’t about the ad. If you beliece that, you’re falling into Trumps trap.

Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs only hours before on GM and another auto company.

Trump heard that and made up the butt-hurt over the Reagan ad as an excuse to get upset that the victim (again) was fighting back rather than submitting, which Canada will NEVER do.

The ad is simply a diversion. He knew of the ad days before his idiotic post. But his post was in response to those decisions to retaliate against Trumps agression.

He’s upset that Canada is not playing his game, so he keeps knocking stuff over to try and put Canada off-balance.

To the republicans, Reagan is kind of a god. Reagan saying those things really could wake up a lot of his base. That's why there was a tantrum about this.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

This theory holds no water. Earlier this year the child rapist president complained about our tariffs and escalated based on that, why would he "hide the real reason" now and what difference does his excuse for a tantrum make?

[–] sbv@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Now that Ford pulled the ads, we'll see what happens.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Trump will just whine about some other random complaint and make up lies to "justify" doing whatever he wants to do.

[–] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's how he 'negotiates'. He bullies his opponent then throws a toddler tantrum when they stand up to his demands. When they back down he makes a new demand.

He does it because IT WORKS. Every time he he throws himself on the floor and kicks his legs someone backs down and teaches him that it's an effective way to negotiate. Every single person who has backed down to him is responsible for teaching him. And then they're surprised when he does it again.

Anyone familiar with early childhood development can tell you why it's a bad idea to give in to a baby like him. But no world leaders, apparently.

The only difference is that this particular tantrum toddler has a live grenade in his hands.

Our government has done a lot of submitting. A few months into the start of this Carney said the time to fight was over.

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 2 points 1 week ago

I disagree. I think he is very worried that the Supreme Court will tell him his tariffs are illegal and he freaked out because this ad is the sort of thing that might sway some of the conservatives on the court.

[–] sixpaque@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I don't know why Trump is whining; that ad was heard by millions of U.S. citizens years ago. Today it's only an expensive rerun but on by the Ontario government. What's the problem?

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Have you watched Trump, at all, ever? He is a big baby. He makes 12-year-old 4chan edgelords look reasonable and mature.

If he behaves like a child it explains why he is attracted to them.

Why is OK for the government to be wasting tax payer dollars on ads?

[–] Knoxvomica@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)
[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

The money goes to US corporations, the only saving grace it has was stopping trade talks but that wasn’t the intent.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl -2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

The government literally owns their own connunciation platforms. They can dissiminate the information they want for free.

Why give money to a US corporation?

[–] Knoxvomica@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

TVO I mean... Yes? I'm guessing it played on there but almost no one watches it. Are you talking about CBC?

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The state literally can just put any message anywhere in any city. It's the State. They can nationalize any company and use their physical and digital infrastructure to send information to their citizens.

[–] Knoxvomica@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Right, do you think that will work for a Canadian province to get the message out to an American audience on American owned TV stations?

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why would the CA gov be paying ads to US companies to influence US citizens? That's fucked.

[–] Knoxvomica@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

ONTARIO GOVERNMENT, NOT CANADIAN.

[–] fancy-straw-simple@piefed.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's about trying to get Americans to put pressure on their politicans to open the trade border. It seems to be working.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 0 points 1 week ago

That's pretty fucked up, if true

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 21 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Ronald Reagan was an extremist dipshit and his neoliberal right wing turn set the stage for the hyper-neoliberal era of Trumpism. If our own political leadership in the 90ies hadn't followed along with the thatcherite bullshit politics and hadn't tightly integrated with the US, we wouldn't be in the situation we're in now.

That we're reduced to extolling the pontifications of that moron from the '80s is just proof of the incredibly bad situation we're in.

[–] KindnessIsPunk@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Correct, Ronald Reagan is the poster child for neoliberal policy. I think that's why it was chosen because when he calls out tariffs for conservatives the call is coming from inside the house.

Exactly. I didn't view this as a "Regan was great" message, but more of a "look what your own idol said about it" message.

The worst person you know just made a great point and then grovelled for forgiveness when the fascist got mad at him about it

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world -3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

What sucks bout the left is that clearly we all know how much this ad infuriates him. The left can't be bothered to share stuff that bothers trump. Like they'll window watch. Barely give an upvote. Definitely not spread it though. I looked on Reddit and this was at 2k upvotes. Like the lefts online engagement is weaker than their punches. If you can't even muster the courage to gut punch donny online when it takes no effort, you sure as fuck ain't ever going to punch any Nazis in real life. This is why nobody on the right is scared or concerned of the left. They can't even seize on these layups. 2k people bothered to upvote a video on a platform of millions. There was 7 million in the streets the other week. Where'd they go?

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What in God's name are you on about?

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world -2 points 1 week ago

Yea I know. You have no idea. That's exactly what I'm talking about.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What sucks about the right is, spreads arms widely. They're nazis.

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Right, so stop letting them steam roll the left FFS. Stop being lazy. Go back to the offensive position and stop allowing nazis to spread their ideas. This generation of leftist are the most ineffective they've ever been. 7 million people willing to drive to a nearest city to stand in a street but they can't muster half that energy to actually confront these Nazis either online or in person. It's pathetic.

I bet most people have close family that can tell them about cat litter in classrooms and transgendered bathrooms but zero people in your family that can tell you why we need a social safety net or why Charlie Kirk was a racist. You people need to wake the fuck up and realize why that is
