Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body.

If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include not just the twitter.com URL but also Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source (archive.today, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org). Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed.

Mass-tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken Markov chain bot will result in a comm ban.

Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.

Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned.

Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society.

Those who were around in the early days of the news megathread may remember Pedro Castillo, the left-leaning leader of Peru who was deposed in December 2022. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, the first woman to be President of Peru, who described herself as a progressive but afterwards routinely sided with Peruvian conservatives and American interests. To say she was unpopular is an understatement of titanic proportions - she descended to such lows that she was, at one point, the single most unpopular leader on the planet. As with most deeply unpopular leaders that side with the West, she kept power for a bafflingly long time.

However, on October 10th, after a period of protests against the government, she was impeached and removed by Peru's Congress in a unanimous vote. José Jerí was sworn in as the new President, who was previously the President of the Congress and is a member of a centrist Peruvian party. The government is trying the classic strategy: keep doing the same thing as before, and sacrifice an unpopular figure - here, Boluarte - in the hopes that this appeases the crowd.

Is this strategy working? It doesn't really seem to be - protests are not only continuing, but strengthening, as it is clear that neoliberalism will not reformed and the brutality by police will not stop (there was very recently a high-profile case in which a musician, Mauricio Ruiz, was murdered). Controversies surrounding Jerí, including allegations of SA, are already being reported. If Jerí is deposed, the next person in line to try their hand at ruling will be the former army general Roberto Chiabra, who would be the ninth President in less than a decade.

The rumors are getting louder about a Russian crossing of the Dnieper into Kherson city. Previously there were some unverified reports of Russian soldiers on Karantynnyy island (blue circle). Now they have grown to encompass Korabel island (red circle).

Famous Russian VDV Telegram channel HersonEnot is posting drone videos, claiming a "mop up" operation is underway, though to my knowledge there is no hard evidence of the presence of Russian troops, so their claims should be taken with a big grain of salt.

Edit: Well, now we have (CW: drone strikes) proof from the Ukrainians that Russia did indeed attack Karantynnyy island, which validates the story somewhat.

Trump's latest strategy when talking about provocative US actions and aggressive foreign policy: just call it fake news!

US targeting data for Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG cruise missile strikes in Russia? Fake news according to Trump. Today's B-1B bomber flight 80km from mainland Venezuela, and 9.6km from Los Testigos Islands (within Venezuela's sovereign airspace there) according to Flightradar24? Apparently that's also false, never happened.

Trump on the B-1B bomber mission:

“No, it’s not accurate. No, it’s false, but we’re not happy with Venezuela for a lot of reasons.”

General Motors’ announcement that production of the BrightDrop electric delivery van will cease at the CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll, Ontario is the latest casualty of the Trump administration’s dangerous and destabilizing auto policies.

GM has made no commitment on what comes next for the facility. CAMI remains a critical regional economic driver and was the centrepiece of a $1-billion retooling supported by federal and provincial investments.

German foreign minister postpones China trip amid tensions

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has postponed his planned visit to China after Beijing confirmed only one substantive meeting.

more

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has postponed a visit to China after Beijing confirmed only one meeting, a Foreign Office spokesperson said. "The Chinese side was ultimately able to confirm only the appointment with the Chinese foreign minister, and could not confirm any other additional appointments," the spokesperson said. The visit, originally scheduled for last week, would have marked the first by a German minister from Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative-led government, which took office in May.

"There are a number of issues that we would like to discuss with the Chinese side, especially at this time," the spokesperson said. While she did not specify which side canceled the trip, the spokeswoman said Germany regretted the development.

Is Germany's Taiwan stance behind the cancellation?

I mean, I don't see much point in meeting the foreign minister of a country which has no independent foreign policy - might as well talk to the Americans directly

Despite plans to depart on Sunday and hold meetings on Monday and Tuesday, China had confirmed only one meeting with Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Earlier on Friday a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson criticized Germany's position on Taiwan. According to the spokesman, calling for the status quo to be preserved without explicitly rejecting the island's independence amounts to supporting "Taiwan independence activities." Wadephul has repeatedly voiced criticism of China's efforts to unilaterally alter the status quo in the region, describing Beijing's Indo-Pacific policy as increasingly aggressive. However, it remains unclear whether China's decision to confirm only one meeting was directly linked to Germany's stance.

China’s new export controls on rare-earth tech have also disrupted EU industries, forcing some firms to halt production. Tensions rose after the Netherlands moved to take over Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia, prompting Beijing to ban some exports and sparking fears of chip shortages in Europe.

Venezuela has moved elements of a Buk-M2E/SA-17 Grizzly air defence battery (1x launcher and radar vehicle (TELAR) + 1x standalone launcher (TEL)) to the coastline in La Guaira state/province, in front of the capital city Caracas. A ZU-23 anti aircraft gun provides short range air defence. This is because if the battalion was located within Caracas itself, it's radars would struggle to see outside of the city due to the valleys and mountains.

Two B-1B bombers from the US are also airborne currently, which could explain the quick deployments and moving around of Buk batteries. The photographs were taken as the system was being deployed, with the removable red protective covers for the semi active radar seekers of the missiles still on some of the missiles, or even on the ground next to the system shortly after removal. These photos have been shared widely on social media already, so OPSEC is already compromised.

Components of S-125/SA-3 air defence systems are also on the move.

Statement from the Meeting of Palestinian Factions in Cairo on October 23-24, 2025:

At the invitation of the Arab Republic of Egypt, under the generous patronage of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and complementing the efforts of the brotherly mediators in Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey to stop the war on Gaza and address its repercussions—most recently the results of the "Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit" in October 2025—a number of Palestinian factions held a meeting in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. They gathered to discuss developments in the Palestinian cause and the second phase of President Trump's plan to stop the war on the Gaza Strip, in preparation for holding a comprehensive national dialogue to protect the national project and restore national unity.

The attendees began their meeting by extending greetings to the masses of the Palestinian people in the homeland and the diaspora, particularly our people in Gaza, and to the martyrs, prisoners, and the wounded, in appreciation of their steadfastness and sacrifices. They affirmed the necessity of completing all efforts to end the suffering and achieve a better future for our people and our national cause.

The attendees also renewed their appreciation for the Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, including those of President Trump, aimed at stopping the war on Gaza.

The Palestinian factions affirmed that the current stage demands a unified national position and a national political vision based on unity of word and destiny, and the rejection of all forms of annexation and displacement in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Al-Quds.

They condemned the occupation parliament's preliminary approval of the law to "Apply Israeli Sovereignty over the West Bank," considering it a dangerous aggression against Palestinian identity and existence. They valued President Trump's decision to halt this move and his promise that it would not be repeated. They also stressed that national unity is the decisive response to these policies and affirmed the necessity of taking all steps to achieve it.

Ecuador Frees Survivor of U.S. Attack on Alleged Drug ‘Submarine’ - Telesur English

Article

While Washington claims the vessel was carrying fentanyl, Quito says it had no grounds to detain the Ecuadorian national. On Monday, Ecuadorian authorities announced that Andres Tufiño Chila, the Ecuadorian who survived the U.S. attack on a “submarine” allegedly carrying drugs in the Caribbean Sea, was released after returning to his country.

The Interior Ministry confirmed that Tufiño Chila arrived in Ecuador on Saturday. After undergoing a medical examination, the National Police’s Anti-Narcotics Unit took him to a flagrancy unit so that the case could be reviewed by an on-duty prosecutor.

“Since there was no report of a crime presented to this institution that would indicate an offense committed in Ecuadorian territory, he could not be detained, as he also had no pending cases against him,” authorities said.

Hours earlier, however, U.S. President Donald Trump had announced that two survivors of the attack would be repatriated to their countries of origin. “Two of the terrorists died. At least 25,000 Americans would have died if I had allowed that submarine to reach land. The two surviving terrorists will be returned to their home countries, Ecuador and Colombia, for detention and prosecution,” he said.

The Republican also mentioned that U.S. intelligence had confirmed that the vessel targeted in the attack “was loaded mainly with fentanyl and other illegal narcotics.”

These were the first two arrests made by the U.S. during its “armed conflict” against drug trafficking. So far, U.S. forces have killed nearly 30 people in at least six attacks on small boats in Caribbean waters.

The attack on the alleged “narco-submarine” took place on Thursday, Oct. 16, according to Trump, who said that having such a vessel “made it clear that this was not an innocent group.”

The U.S. deployment in the Caribbean, which began in August under the justification of fighting drug trafficking, has caused growing tension between Washington and the government of President Nicolas Maduro, who sees the military operation as the prelude to a possible attack on Venezuela.

US axes website for reporting human rights abuses by US-armed foreign forces - BBC News

spoilerThe US State Department has removed an online portal for reporting alleged human rights violations by foreign military units supplied with American weapons.

The Human Rights Reporting Gateway (HRG) acted as a formal "tip line" to the US government.

It was the only publicly accessible channel of its kind for organisations or individuals to inform it directly of potentially serious abuses by US-armed foreign forces.

Its deletion has been condemned by human rights campaigners and by a senior congressional aide who drafted the law requiring it. The State Department insisted it was still abiding by the law.

The portal was established in 2022 following pressure on successive administrations to abide by updated provisions of the Leahy Law, named after former US Senator Patrick Leahy. These require the government to "facilitate receipt" of information on alleged gross violations of human rights by military units supplied by Washington.

Among the cases submitted via the HRG was the alleged excessive use of force by security forces during anti-government protests in Colombia, while several cases were due to be submitted relating to US-armed units of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the occupied West Bank, according to Amnesty International.

Tim Rieser, former senior aide to Senator Leahy who wrote the 2011 amendment mandating information gathering, told the BBC the gateway's removal meant the State Department was "clearly ignoring the law".

He added it was a further sign that "the entire human rights architecture" within the department was being "rendered largely ineffective".

"The United States will find itself supporting foreign security forces that commit heinous crimes even though nothing is done about it," said Mr Rieser. "As a result there will be less incentive for foreign governments to bring people who commit such crimes to justice."

In response, the US State Department insisted it was continuing to receive reports regarding gross violations of human rights and was engaging with "credible organisations" on a full spectrum of human rights concerns. It said: "The Department abides by its legal requirements".

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has overseen a sweeping reorganisation of the State Department involving widespread layoffs and eliminating some offices focused on human rights monitoring. The department this year released a slimmed-down annual human rights report which critics said omitted alleged crimes by US allies but included those by foreign leaders the Trump administration opposes.

The department has previously said its restructure made it leaner and more efficient and followed President Trump's "America First" foreign policy which sees some human rights promotion as ideologically driven.

Charles Blaha, former Director of the Office of Security and Human Rights at the State Department, said people in the field would now have "no established channel" for reporting gross violations of human rights by foreign security forces.

The government's ability to deter abuses was "severely weakened", said Mr Blaha who is now an adviser to the Washington-based think tank Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN).

The BBC learned during the summer that the HRG site was earmarked for deletion. Its removal was highlighted by DAWN in August but has not previously been acknowledged by the State Department. The BBC confirmed this week that officials phased out the reporting channel during the department's restructure.

Screengrabs of the portal taken by the BBC before its deletion show it asked for information on US-armed foreign military units involved in alleged abuses including extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, torture and rape. It required extensive details to ensure credible reporting including unit names, identities of alleged perpetrators, specific locations and dates.

Blaha had already voiced frustration that despite the HRG passing its pilot phase, the Biden administration had not done enough to publicise it, meaning the provision to "facilitate receipt" of information was still not being fully honoured before the Trump administration deleted the channel entirely.

The US is the world's biggest contributor of military aid to foreign countries, supplying funding, equipment, training and arms to more than 150 nations. Its vetting procedures to prevent arms going to units involved in breaches of international law have evolved over the years, with the 1997 legislation named after Senator Leahy being one its major pillars.

At the heart of the law is Congress sending a message to the administration that taxpayer funding cannot support human rights abuses abroad, says Amanda Klasing, who oversees government relations at Amnesty International USA.

"If I'm a member of Congress, my perspective is: 'I want to protect my constituents and their taxpayer funding from going to torturers or people that kill their own citizens for protesting," she told the BBC.

Klasing oversaw the compilation and submission of several reports to the Human Rights Reporting Gateway.

These included allegations that American arms were used by Colombian security forces during mass anti-government protests in 2021, in which at least 47 people were killed and many wounded according to the group. Amnesty says among the arms were US-supplied high-capacity launchers for stun and smoke grenades.

Klasing says she had also gathered evidence relating to the killing of 20 Palestinians during IDF raids in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank in October and November 2023. Amnesty was preparing to submit its report on these incidents to the HRG before its deletion.

Ever since they made sure that the Ukraine war would go on forever in late 2022 or so, I keep grasping my hands thinking about these weird Europeans, almost daily. Lately, I've been thinking about Poland a lot. You've heard all these super aggressive comments about the Nord Stream attacks coming from all these senior Polish politicians (no women there either, no Baerbock or Kallas, right?), and last week they set the prime Ukrainian suspect ("Volodymyr Z.") free, and Germany didn't even mention it. Yeah, I live in such a cucked country, it's pretty bleak.

But why is the Polish state acting in this way? Is it really smart to piss off Germany and Russia at the same time? I get that Poland is quite successful right now, as a country and economy. Probably in a better shape than 8% of the EU. But they're still... Poland, you know. The population is projected to shrink from 42 million to 37 over the next couple of decades. They're old. They can't fight Russia, they do not want to be next Ukraine, right? Didn't they kind of do the same thing in 1938, and did it not turn out real bad for them? Now I'm not saying that I want to see Germany invade Poland again - the Bundeswehr is joke army, and will always be, but you get my drift - why does Poland seem to be kind of prone to - as soon as they are doing sort of alright - piss ff their more powerful neighbors, and then having to suffer for a long time after? This seems odd.

Please tell me where my thinking is wrong here, thanks!
