Those who were around in the early days of the news megathread may remember Pedro Castillo, the left-leaning leader of Peru who was deposed in December 2022. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, the first woman to be President of Peru, who described herself as a progressive but afterwards routinely sided with Peruvian conservatives and American interests. To say she was unpopular is an understatement of titanic proportions - she descended to such lows that she was, at one point, the single most unpopular leader on the planet. As with most deeply unpopular leaders that side with the West, she kept power for a bafflingly long time.
However, on October 10th, after a period of protests against the government, she was impeached and removed by Peru's Congress in a unanimous vote. José Jerí was sworn in as the new President, who was previously the President of the Congress and is a member of a centrist Peruvian party. The government is trying the classic strategy: keep doing the same thing as before, and sacrifice an unpopular figure - here, Boluarte - in the hopes that this appeases the crowd.
Is this strategy working? It doesn't really seem to be - protests are not only continuing, but strengthening, as it is clear that neoliberalism will not reformed and the brutality by police will not stop (there was very recently a high-profile case in which a musician, Mauricio Ruiz, was murdered). Controversies surrounding Jerí, including allegations of SA, are already being reported. If Jerí is deposed, the next person in line to try their hand at ruling will be the former army general Roberto Chiabra, who would be the ninth President in less than a decade.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Statement from the Meeting of Palestinian Factions in Cairo on October 23-24, 2025:
At the invitation of the Arab Republic of Egypt, under the generous patronage of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and complementing the efforts of the brotherly mediators in Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey to stop the war on Gaza and address its repercussions—most recently the results of the "Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit" in October 2025—a number of Palestinian factions held a meeting in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. They gathered to discuss developments in the Palestinian cause and the second phase of President Trump's plan to stop the war on the Gaza Strip, in preparation for holding a comprehensive national dialogue to protect the national project and restore national unity.
The attendees began their meeting by extending greetings to the masses of the Palestinian people in the homeland and the diaspora, particularly our people in Gaza, and to the martyrs, prisoners, and the wounded, in appreciation of their steadfastness and sacrifices. They affirmed the necessity of completing all efforts to end the suffering and achieve a better future for our people and our national cause.
The attendees also renewed their appreciation for the Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, including those of President Trump, aimed at stopping the war on Gaza.
The Palestinian factions affirmed that the current stage demands a unified national position and a national political vision based on unity of word and destiny, and the rejection of all forms of annexation and displacement in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Al-Quds.
They condemned the occupation parliament's preliminary approval of the law to "Apply Israeli Sovereignty over the West Bank," considering it a dangerous aggression against Palestinian identity and existence. They valued President Trump's decision to halt this move and his promise that it would not be repeated. They also stressed that national unity is the decisive response to these policies and affirmed the necessity of taking all steps to achieve it.
doesn't anyone know what "technocrat" means here? In all other contexts, "technocrat" is a slur. But Palestinians constantly calling for technocrat rule.
Is it a translation confusion, a concept not quite existing in english, or something else?
For the resistance, my interpretation is that it means a government of experts drawn from all factions and groups, to give it greater legitimacy among Palestinians than if it was solely Hamas representatives. For the imperialists, they want a puppet group that excludes Hamas that will be controlled by the Board, so the technocrats must be compradors.
The contradiction here, and on the rearmament issue, is one I see blowing up the temporary peace down the line. Palestinians want to keep their weapons and have a government that represents them. The occupier wants to permanently remove their weapons and ability to self govern. These can not be resolved through diplomacy.
Side note, has anyone been getting the anti Hamas ads on YouTube? They play censored footage of the executions of collaborators and claim Hamas is just murdering Palestinians for fun. Feels like consent manufacturing to blame Palestinians for the collapse of the ceasefire
