Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body.

If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include not just the twitter.com URL but also xcancle.org (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source (archive.today, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org). Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed.

Mass-tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken Markov chain bot will result in a comm ban.

Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.

Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned.

Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society.

Those who were around in the early days of the news megathread may remember Pedro Castillo, the left-leaning leader of Peru who was deposed in December 2022. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, the first woman to be President of Peru, who described herself as a progressive but afterwards routinely sided with Peruvian conservatives and American interests. To say she was unpopular is an understatement of titanic proportions - she descended to such lows that she was, at one point, the single most unpopular leader on the planet. As with most deeply unpopular leaders that side with the West, she kept power for a bafflingly long time.

However, on October 10th, after a period of protests against the government, she was impeached and removed by Peru's Congress in a unanimous vote. José Jerí was sworn in as the new President, who was previously the President of the Congress and is a member of a centrist Peruvian party. The government is trying the classic strategy: keep doing the same thing as before, and sacrifice an unpopular figure - here, Boluarte - in the hopes that this appeases the crowd.

Is this strategy working? It doesn't really seem to be - protests are not only continuing, but strengthening, as it is clear that neoliberalism will not reformed and the brutality by police will not stop (there was very recently a high-profile case in which a musician, Mauricio Ruiz, was murdered). Controversies surrounding Jerí, including allegations of SA, are already being reported. If Jerí is deposed, the next person in line to try their hand at ruling will be the former army general Roberto Chiabra, who would be the ninth President in less than a decade.

The Venezuelan government claims to have captured a group of mercenaries linked to the CIA. State media reports that the captured men said a U.S. military exercise that began today in Trinidad and Tobago will be used as a pretext to attack Venezuela.

[–] ColombianLenin@hexbear.net 33 points 5 days ago

Lmao, no way they fell to venezuelan fishermen again

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 34 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

They really like their strategy of sending a small group of mercenaries

[–] Lovely_sombrero@hexbear.net 26 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The CIA is not good at directly doing a mission. They are only good when they arm & fund a third party. And even most of those fail, but they have so many resources that it doesn't matter.

Israeli doctors were giving chemotherapy to healthy Palestinian detainees, making them think they had cancer.

Emad Al Saraj is one of the cases. After his release, doctors ran tests and told him he didn’t have cancer.

wtf what even is the point of that? just mental torture?

If they don't have cancer, then the testing is for determining the safety/toxicity profile of the drugs, considering an actual drug testing protocol.

In other words, testing the possible toxic effects of dangerous chemicals without consent. Literally what scientists use lab animals for. They don't see Palestinians as human, if anyone still needs any confirmation.

Palestinians have been lab rats for a while, so this isnt surprising.

Still in development: milei very likely to win the midterms lmfao

Results in about 15 minutes.

He will probably find a way to fuck up.

[–] ColombianLenin@hexbear.net 23 points 5 days ago

Can we get an :argentina-cool:?

[–] Torenico@hexbear.net 45 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Argentinian midterms results:

Congress (92% of the votes)

La Libertad Avanza (milei): 40%

Fuerza Patria (Peronism and others): 31%

Provincias Unidas (Remnants of the old UCR party and other local parties): 7%

Frente de Izquierda Unidad (Trots): 5%

Senate (90% of the votes)

La Libertad Avanza (milei): 42%

Fuerza Patria (Peronism and others): 28%

Provincias Unidas (Remnants of the old UCR party and other local parties): 13%

Frente de Izquierda Unidad (Trots): 4%

Somehow milei was able to overturn his pretty terrible defeat in the Buenos Aires province EVEN THOUGH his candidate had to drop out due to links with drug smugglers. They hold a 1% lead over the peronist coalition.

Participation was around 60%, the lowest since 1983.

[–] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 35 points 5 days ago

Insane that the guy who crashed the economy that he runs by consulting his dead dog via séance is winning the fucking elections, and his only opposition appears to be fellow neolibs/fash? Fuck me

[–] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 28 points 5 days ago (1 children)

A depressing result. Possible that the low turnout relates to people feeling defeated by austerity and just not bothering to participate?

[–] Socialism_Is_The_Alternative@hexbear.net 22 points 5 days ago (2 children)

In my opinion, we should not rule out the possibility that the Milei regime simply rigged the elections. It's very odd result, with the Argentinian economy in terminal decline and the debts rising...

[–] Torenico@hexbear.net 33 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (4 children)

No rigging took place, despite it's many flaws our electoral system is quite robust and democratic (politically speaking), even more democratic than the US one for example (which is not a lot to say).

What happens is that there's a sense among people that they would rather suffer tremendous hardships before getting governed by peronists once again. It's insane, completely uncharted territory, but we're here.

[–] corvidenjoyer@hexbear.net 21 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

So in the minds of the people there really is no serious opposition?

U.S. Troops to Arrive in Trinidad and Tobago for Military Drills - Telesur English

Article

Deployment near Venezuelan coast comes amid rising regional tensions. On Friday, the Trinidadian Foreign Affairs Ministry announced that U.S. troops will arrive in Trinidad and Tobago this weekend to conduct military exercises over several days.

This small Caribbean nation lies very close to Venezuela, with the island of Trinidad located just 7 miles from the Venezuelan coast at its nearest point.

The first troops are scheduled to arrive on Sunday in Port of Spain, the Trinidadian capital, aboard the destroyer USS Gravely, which will later be followed by the U.S. Marine Corps’ 22nd Expeditionary Unit.

The USS Gravely will carry out joint training exercises with the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force and is set to depart on Oct. 30.

President Maduro says the US military buildup in the Caribbean is aimed at Venezuela's oil, gas and gold reserves, which are among the biggest in the world. He says the US is creating “Hollywood stories” about narco-trafficking to portray him as the villain and justify…

In the coming days, the U.S. Marine Corps will conduct military exercises with Trinidad and Tobago off the Venezuelan coast.

In recent months, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump of seeking to promote political destabilization operations against the Bolivarian revolution.

So far, the United States has deployed warships, a submarine, and fighter jets to the Caribbean Sea to allegedly conduct counter-narcotics operations. These actions have resulted in 37 deaths in nine bombings targeting small motorboats said to be transporting drugs.

EU Fails to Agree on Using Frozen Russian Assets to Fund Ukraine Aid - Telesur English

Article

Von der Leyen seeks to create a ‘reparation loan’ of around 140 billion euros. On Thursday, EU leaders failed to agree on a plan to use frozen Russian assets to finance new loans for Ukraine, after divisions resurfaced at a European Council summit.

The summit’s conclusions contained significantly softer wording than earlier drafts, reflecting Belgium’s objections and legal concerns raised by the European Central Bank (ECB).

EU leaders reaffirmed their political, economic and military support for Ukraine but stopped short of backing any specific funding mechanism. The conclusions merely invited the Commission to present, “as soon as possible, options for financial support based on an assessment of Ukraine’s financing needs,” saying that the issue would be revisited at the next EU summit in December.

The document also reiterated that Russia’s assets should remain immobilized until “Russia ceases its war of aggression against Ukraine and compensates it for the damage caused.”

The dispute centers on a proposal outlined by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her September State of the Union address to create a “reparation loan” of around 140 billion euros (about US$163 billion), backed by frozen Russian sovereign assets.

The plan is supported by Germany, France and the Baltic States, but opposed by Belgium and the ECB, which warn that it could breach international law and threaten eurozone financial stability.

Belgium holds most of the Russian central bank assets immobilized by the EU shortly after the conflict began. Speaking ahead of the summit, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said he would block the plan unless other EU members agreed to share the financial risks equally, provide guarantees in case frozen assets must later be returned to Moscow, and ensure all countries holding Russian funds act together.

“If we move, we must move all together, that’s European solidarity,” he said, warning he would use all political and legal means to stop the decision if these conditions were not met.

Wait so they’ll seize the money but use it for loans? Ukraine would still have to pay Europe back even though it isn’t Europe’s money?

Elon Musk spent $288M to cost Tesla $1.4B in lost revenue – and more to come

Tesla CEO Elon Musk managed to find a way to turn lobbying, which is typically one of the most efficient ways to spend money as a company, into a net revenue loser for his company – flipping the script again from a true “innovator” in the field of corporate destruction.

But, due to Musk’s social media addiction to his bizarre upside-down twitter feed, he and many others convinced themselves that somehow, harming EVs would be good for an EV company.

To be fair, the only reason why Tesla is worth so much is because Elon's stupid brain vibes so well with all the stupids who then buy Tesla stock.

spoiler

During the 2024 US election, Elon Musk spent a total of $288 million on bribes to get anti-EV candidates elected. He did this despite full public knowledge that these candidates opposed electric vehicles, and had promised to harm them.

But, due to Musk’s social media addiction to his bizarre upside-down twitter feed, he and many others convinced themselves that somehow, harming EVs would be good for an EV company.

So, Musk spent the millions, got what he wanted, claims it was all because of him (egotistical much?), and as a result, his company… is worse off.

According to the company’s 10-Q filing, Tesla lost $1.41 billion worth of revenue in just the last 9 months that it would have had if not for changes in regulatory regimes. Here’s the passage, in financial speak:

Translated, that means that the value of Tesla’s various contracts to sell regulatory credits to other companies has reduced by $1.41 billion dollars as compared to where they were at the end of last year. Tesla says that the specific reason for this is due to the change in regulatory credits that its bad CEO lobbied for.

Heading To War | Predictive History - Prof. Jiang

Jang Shui Chin predicts that further ("Israeli") war with Iran is likely imminent, and that it will be "all out" and prolonged.

He also talks about things like:

  • How states' internal pressures can (sometimes) overcome their immediate geopolitical interests.
  • The war in Ukraine, and why both NATO and Ukraine are committed to their own defeat rather than diplomacy.
  • The reasons China doesn't become directly involved militarily in conflicts.

After months of buildup, Russia has successfully tested the nuclear powered and nuclear armed Burevestnik (Storm Petrel in English, SSC-X-9 Skyfall NATO designation) cruise missile.

The Chief of the General Staff [Gerasimov] reported that the test took place on 21 October 2025 and that "unlike in previous tests, this time the missile covered the distance of 14,000 km. And this is not a limit." He later added that the missile was in flight for about 15 hours. The missile used its nuclear propulsion system during the flight and conducted a series of "vertical and horizontal maneuvers" demonstrating the capability to evade air- and missile defense.

The same as a regular cruise missile, but over essentially an unlimited range. The idea of a nuclear powered cruise missile is not new, with the US experimenting during the cold war, but abandoning the idea after fielding ICBMs.

The president [Putin] noted that "it will be necessary to decide how to classify this type of armament (presumably to distinguish it from regular cruise missiles), to determine the possible ways of employing this system, and to start preparing the infrastructure for the deployment of this weapon in our armed forces."

English source

Official Kremlin source with video, relevant discussion 9 minutes in

Important to note this test took place exactly one day after the reportedly disastrous Lavrov - Rubio phonecall that led to the cancellation of the hypothesised Budapest summit. Russia has played the Burevestnik test card now, after months of signalling and hinting.

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 34 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

Curiously, this is something we’ve seen three times in under a year. We’ve see it happen with the Adjustment, the Kirkening, and now the Napoligone Jewels where people think the culprits made a 100% clean getaway just because the cops didn’t immediately reveal intimate details of ongoing investigations to the media, with boatloads of ink spilled over analyzing the actions of clearly experienced ruthless mobsters only for it to turn out to be a bunch of random dudes whose criminal records consist of stealing Timmy’s pencil in second grade

Is it from watching too much cop dramas where people get the idea that the cops are totally lost if nobody’s locked up within 24 hours? That because we’re privy to investigation details in a fictional show that’s how it works in real life too, so the cops not saying anything = not knowing anything?

The first two had redditors mouthing off about professional hits with their “””analysis””” like they were experts with decades of experience, it will be fun to see whether any of their confident “””analysis””” of this heist turns out to be correct or whether you can’t actually deduce intimate details of a crime solely from a grainy CCTV video taken from another building (a real mystery that has me on the edge of my seat). I guess a reddit “””investigation””” is considered S-class if it doesn’t get some random person death threats and/or shot

[–] PosadistInevitablity@hexbear.net 32 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (5 children)

If you commit a high profile enough crime for the security forces to just decide to ignore the laws to catch you, you are pretty much fucked.

The surveillance state is completely overwhelming - a single person is trivial to find with those resources when constitutional rights are discarded in pursuit of them.

Not to disagree with the main point you've made, but I also think it's premature to declare the perps caught until the goods are returned, just like how I think its premature to say they "got the adjustor" when Luigi's case has more holes than the CEO.

As for why folks always believe the cops have failed within the first 24hrs? I think some of it is that we expect the pigs to be present at the scene of the crime; you'd think there'd be security at the Louvre, or some cops in pretty much any immediate vicinity of a typical US city. I think it shatters the perception of police being preventative to these sorts of high profile crimes.

Oh, and I think folks are always desperate for a win.

Lula da Silva and Donald Trump meet in Malaysia. President Lula says that teams from both countries will meet to resolve the situation regarding tariffs and sanctions against Brazilian officials. Lula offered to mediate an end to the conflict between the United States and Venezuela. The Brazilian president stated that Latin America is a region of peace, without armed conflict.

Trump said he admires Brazil and Lula's political career. Trump reportedly said that Lula was persecuted in Brazil, but proved his innocence and is now in his third term. When asked about Jair Bolsonaro by journalists, Trump reportedly said, “That's none of your business.” Trump said he will visit Brazil, and Lula confirmed that he will travel to the United States.

RAND REPORT - Accept China has won. Best case scenario is avoiding a century of humiliation

clarify U.S. objectives in the rivalry with language that explicitly rejects absolute versions of victory and accepts the legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party.

each side must accept, in ways that are deeply ingrained and broadly shared among decision-making officials, that some degree of modus vivendi must necessarily be part of the relationship

each side must accept the essential political legitimacy of the other.

state that it does not support Taiwan independence, seek a permanent separation across the Straits, or oppose peaceful unification

creating the maximum incentive for Beijing to pursue gradual approaches to realizing its ultimate goal

Reunification. Taiwan surrendered its stranglehold on chips and became a chip itself to be traded accordingly.

[The US should] balance its commitments to Taiwan with leveraging its influence to ensure Taiwan's actions do not escalate tensions with China… use its potential leverage over Taiwan to limit its activities that upset the status quo.

This would have been a great strategy for the US to adopt 10 years ago.
