Sir, I'm impressed. Are you a sound effects artist in real life?

Do you, by any chance, take requests? I'd like to hear again the sounds of old modems dialing.

Easy fix: call a fax machine with your phone :D

don't ask me how I know...

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 3 points 1 month ago

I know because I used to work on a help desk and if someone called about their fax being down I would call the line to see if I needed to send it to the phone team or the printer team.

Well this is a new bother for me, you got the commas in the wrong spot.

It should be

Bap, ba da bap, ba da bap, ba da bap, bap... Ringtone.

Seeing what you can do with that mouth has me predictably moist (audible sound of peeling one warm slice of bologna from another)

I was once playing in a classical concert. In one piece that my instrument wasn't needed for, I was given the job of controlling the volume knob on the amplifier we used to connect to the keyboard (with organ sounds), so the organist could play a range of dynamics.

I had not turned off my phone.

I got a text during the middle of the concert. Sitting right next to the amplifier.

Venjent is a modern legend. He will take the most random or even iconic sounds and turn them into sick beats.

I assumed you were linking Mario Piu's take from 15 years earlier. It was a club classic.

AFAIK they did that because of GSM interference and the phenomenon mostly disappeared not because those cheap little speakers are mostly extinct, but because the technology used by cell phones changed. In fact, GSM is being phased out in most countries.

I have an ancient clock radio and it still goes off if my phone is close enough.

I like that as I hate unexpected calls, so it's nice to get a heads up.

My parents recently got a new wired telephone at their home. It announces on the display that a call is coming in, but only starts ringing a second later.

I would love to know why that was deemed a good design decision.

[–] silasmariner@programming.dev 13 points 1 month ago

It's so if you're hovering over the phone you can pick it up in silence and look like a wizard

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Light travels faster than sound, duh.

[–] RunawayFixer@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

That's good for office work, the constant ringing gets annoying and when sitting behind the desk, you're going to see the display light up anyhow. But yes, those settings shouldn't be used for a house phone, I wouldn't be surprised if that telecom company uses the same standard install for small businesses and households.

Anyone else wonder how many legos those speakers ate?

[–] sidebro@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

Kids of today will never know.
