Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

It's 2008 and the job market is shit

It's 2011 and the job market is shit

It's 2016 and the job market is shit

It's 2020 and the job market is shit

It's 2025 and the job market is shit

At what point is it just a permanent state of being?

the great recession still hasn't ended for the working class. it never will until we end capitalism

[–] AOCapitulator@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

It was good for a bit during the black death, but then it was all downhill.

[–] novibe@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 day ago

“Sir you must pay me more, my whole family died! So I’m the only cattle rearer you have 😏”

Such good times

[–] BoxedFenders@hexbear.net 46 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This is actually worse than it sounds. Not only are new graduates unable to find a job, but they have taken on more college debt than any generation before them. More debt to pay off with a smaller than expected salary also means a lower chance to buy a home. They will be forever stuck in a cycle of paying debts and rent without building any real equity. They were talking about this crisis back when I was in college (late 90s) and it has only gotten worse since. This generation is turbofucked from all ends.

A highly skilled proletarianized group of young people with no future prospects. My, I wonder what will happen when you have nothing to lose but their chains?

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 4 points 22 hours ago

Thank you porky for ripping away one of capitalism’s big cliches.

Capitalism is a lazy system and capitalists are lazy. Said it before but the empire isn’t dying, it’s retiring. The working class is suffering because of capitalists being lazy, complacent creatures.

Of course no one will take school seriously when employers have essentially been sleeping on the job. Work hard for what jobs? Employers don’t want to put anyone to work.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I never want to fucking hear a word of “muh efficiency” from the porks.

Yeah, you’re too efficient. Look at all the humans literally going to waste and no porky, you can’t save them for later they need jobs now or they die. All the educations that needed not happen, all the people who didn’t need to be born and all the resources going into raising people who in porky’s infinite wisdom, they have decided they will literally be born just to die. Leaving all those resources used up for nothing.

[–] redchert@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 23 hours ago

Efficiency is propaganda and fake, and always was. Socialism is actually efficency, capitalism isnt, because thats not the goal.

No amount of :smuglord: ing by people who do trades will help either, because if everyone who did college instead did trades, you'd have a similar problem. Also, in my country at least, construction and plumbing is being hit hard for some reason, so it's not a guarantee for success.

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

“Just to go college, bro.”

“STEM only bro”

“Engineering or coding only bro”

“Just learn a trade, bro.” <- You are here

“Just join the military bro”

“Just start your own business bro.”

“Just live in the woods, bro.”

Bonus round (no particular order):

“Just network bro.”

“Just be a full-time volunteer, bro.”

“Just take online courses porky doesn’t even count, bro.”

“Just accept flipping burgers forever, bro.”

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 3 points 19 hours ago

We're so fucked 😭

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Everyone switching to "profitable degrees" ends up tanking the value of that degree and it's happened multiple times within the last 40 years. Dentistry in the 80s, law in the 90s, web design in the 00s, and now computer science in 2025. The trades, as you say, are no different. They're just a cheaper version of degrees with higher return on investment.

I suspect if your country is seeing plumbing and construction go down the drain, it's a sign new buildings aren't being built, repaired, or renovated. Could be due to too many empty office buildings since the start of covid making everything work from home.

In 10 years when the oldest Gen Alpha are young adults: "Help, I did 5 years apprenticing and I can't find work, my parents lied to me, they said I was guaranteed a job!"

Gen Z commenting: "you just didn't grind hard enough bro. How many side hustles did you have while learning?"

[–] Meltyheartlove@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago

Research shows that entering the job market during an economic slump can . . . hamper wealth building

When do I start building wealth?????????????

Bean based dips are always going up in value.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I really don't like all these "MAN THE JOB MARKET IS SHIT" articles coming out right when I really want to be like "Hey boss I think you should pay me at least $4/hr more because that's the value of the fucking food I was taking home that you've imperiously decided for everyone must be thrown away instead like you're the Grapes of Fucking Wrath incarnate, plus even without that I'm already underpaid because I do a lot of serious creative work and effort intensive techniques with the food I make that I KNOW you weren't getting from previous vegan chefs BECAUSE MY PREDECESSOR TELLS ME "yeah I didn't do that I wasn't paid enough, I told them fuck that I'm not paid enough" like working on the menu, all of which I do because I actually enjoy the work"

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

p.s. rate my rant, how likely do you think that'd get me a raise. I could rant WAY harder though

[–] mrfugu@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

Depends on your boss. There’s three types (unequally distributed): 1. “I’m already paying you as much as the overlords will let me but let me relay your message just in case.” 2. “Oh for sure I was knowingly underpaying you because you never said anything.” 3. “fuck you, take what you get or leave.”

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

My friend, you and I make for a great rant game. But I don’t any one of us will fill the BMF hole in Hexbear. deeper-sadness

But we can certainly try. 8/10

The generation who had their college/hs experiences ruined by COVID are loving that the job market is just as fun

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Oh hey, like in China! If only they weren't copying our totally cool economic system that's working really well right now lol.
