All the mainstream media organizations have effectively capitulated to fascism, at this point. They can and should be fighting this from a 1st amendment standpoint. The only reason they aren't, is because this is what they stand for.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 month ago (5 children)

The first amendment doesn't protect them from their advertisers. Unilever and coke don't want their names attached to anything that pisses off 1/3rd of the country. Its the same reason YouTube is so sanitized now.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 month ago (2 children)

This was apparently the FCC chair, threatening them with retribution. That is illegal.

[–] primrosepathspeedrun@anarchist.nexus 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Can we please stop pretending anyone who matters gives a single shit about the law?

[–] unphazed@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's become a glaring example of "Rules for thee, not for me."

Always was, just more thee now.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Did abc say that? If so, you're right, and this ought to be interesting

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

ABC didn't have to. The FCC chair said it publicly, on a right-wing podcast. Then, suddenly...ABC cancels him.

Seems like the real issue is the conglomerate that owns the affiliates

The stunning dropping of Kimmel comes mere minutes after Nexstar axed his late night show on the 32 ABC affiliates it owns out of a total of 200 stations throughout the nation.

And, of course, Nexstar has an acquisition currently pending which needs FCC approval

I wonder how much $TRUMP the CEO of Nextstar owns....

This is about a 6 billion dollar merger, not advertisers. This is not about advertising.

[–] primrosepathspeedrun@anarchist.nexus 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Then be pissier and louder.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I love a good boycott but I already don't watch anything from abc and they probably know that

Check their advertisers.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Unilever and coke don't want their names attached to anything that pisses off 1/3rd of the country.

Hmmm, but which third is it that they don't want to piss off? Because they only seem to care about the alt-reich third of the country.

This is the same network that fired Roseanne for a racist tweet a few years ago. The message doesn't matter, the timing and the number of outraged people does. Its not ideology it's pure business.

I highly recommend reading (even just skimming) Manufacturing Consent for an overview about how mass media systematically self-censors. @the_crotch@sh.itjust.works already mentioned advertising, one of those five major filters.

It's important to understand that this effect doesn't require any conspiracy.

Colbert was the canary in the gold mine and canary #2 just dropped

[–] Grapho@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

First they came for the shitlibs

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

fortunately, there are so many of them that there's a chance they won't be able to move on the next group. lol

[–] onlooker@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 month ago (3 children)

And canaries #3 and #4 seem to already be lined up. From CNN's article:

“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social on Wednesday night. “Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!!”

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

and americans will still continue to insist that other country's are the authoritarian; not us.

[–] ValarieLenin@midwest.social 2 points 1 month ago

Jimmy and Seth are both so so so much worse hosts than Colbert and Kimmel. As a millennial its been insane to watch Kimmel's career path and person growth from when I was first introduced to him in the Man Show.

[–] Grapho@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

Jimmy Fallon won't even get spared after all the legwork he did for the Trump campaign bruh 😂

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 month ago

Snowflakes.

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 month ago (9 children)

As an outsider, it's utterly astonishing how fucked up your country has become in only 9 short months.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 month ago

it was fucked up long before that. Everyobody is scared and shooting each other, everybody is broke buying pointless shit.

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 month ago

Well it was pretty fucked up before, too

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It's always been like this, but it had a mask before trump that made everything happen slow enough to make people doubt that it was happening, so that it all can eventually seem acceptable; trump doesn't care about the mask and has accelerated it to a noticeable speed before everyone is ready to accept it.

[–] folaht@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

If you're astonished, then you haven't read any history of the US.
It's so much steeped in blood and so wildly capitalist
that it's more astonishing that it was able to not collapse
and keep a good image during the 20th century.
It's saving grace is having the largest deposits of coal by far,
but with solar power on the rise that's not cutting it anymore.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 month ago

Liberals laid the groundwork for years to prepare for Fascism with the police state and illegal wars. All Trump had to do was pull the lever.

[–] return2ozma@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

But wait, there's more!

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 month ago

The country has been fucked up for many years, this is just the qualitative leap.

[–] Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

Just wait until we hit back.

[–] Mrkawfee@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Imperial decline. Its quite something to witness.

[–] pdxfed@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

title should call out Disney-ABC, not just ABC. It's important to connect the dots how few outlets there are and how they are aligned. Christofacist will not be any stretch for Disney, and they have a king background in war propaganda films.

[–] Aria@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 1 month ago

I expected him to have said something celebratory or at least making light of it. The only thing he said is that the 'MAGA gang' are capitalising on his death.

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The key part to note is that the cancellation of the show did not need to be mandated by the state because the state represents the interests of the ruling class which is the capital owning class. The capitalists who own the network made a political decision to cancel him.

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 1 month ago

Its also to set an example that no discourse is allowed because all Kimmel did was point out that Trump didn't seem to care much about Kirk by posting that video where he is asked about Kirk and he starts rambling that he is happy that there is a lot of trucks hauling stuff for his saloon.

[–] TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fuck every one of these network stations. Why do they even still exist?

[–] Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This will be there end. They'd rather have fascism than stay in business. Same as the Democrats would rather support Israel raping people instead of stopping fascism. But not us. Fuck them and fuck this.

[–] TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I hope but look at all the corporations that just got bigger after Hitler

[–] Catalyst_A@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

That was 1930s Germany. We, the radicals in the civilian population aren't the fucking people from Germany. We've studied this and know the counters. These corporations won't grow. New ones, new factions will grow.

[–] kemsat@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

It’s not even about Kirk. It’s about calling out Trump for being full of shit. Trump got asked about grieving Kirk, said he was fine then began talking about trucks starting construction.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

So who's the next late night host? Kid Rock? Rob Schneider?

[–] Hexadecimalkink@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

I didn't think the USA would be stiffling free speech consideri this is the fredom they try to export all over the world.

[–] DancingBear@midwest.social 3 points 1 month ago

This is because the corporation wants a 6 billion dollar merger. This is the only reason in fact.

[–] RedRibbonArmy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

It's political correctness. We're fucked.
