Can somebody give me some overview about which Linux phones are there exactly and which are the most developed?

[โ€“] Sunshine@piefed.ca 26 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Most developed:

Ubuntu Touch and Sailfish.

Completely independent from Android components:

Postmarket OS and Tizen.

Though my phone has run sailfish for nearly a year now, I'm not sure my next phone will - SFOS is very good in a lot of ways but its not open source, so its progress at getting better is very slow due to the small team that works on it

Man, is Plasma mobile dead?

[โ€“] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Fairly

Edit: apparently development just no longer takes place in the separate mobile repo

There's a pretty good list here: https://linmob.net/resources/

There is the Volla Quintus which can dual Boot its own Volla OS, but also Ubuntu Touch.

There is the Pine Phone which supports every major Linux mobile OS.

There is the FuriPhone FLX1 which runs on an Android kernel.

There is also the Librem 5 which runs PureOS.

Iโ€™m sure other people know way more than me, especially on the linuxphone sub.

Iโ€™m kinda surprised, a lot of what phone users do are simple in regards to how a smartphone is used. Iโ€™m a simpleton, a few apps, text and call or video call if needed. Thatโ€™s it.

โ€œYou canโ€™t program your phone and sideload custom built apps!โ€

โ€œDo you do that?โ€

โ€œWell, noโ€ฆbut I could!โ€

I think more open phones should be the norm whether or not weโ€™re using the function that much but also I agree that I really just donโ€™t need to run some crazy shit off it, either. I even spend probably too much time with my phone and still donโ€™t get it!

Open sourcing video call would be possible positive. Yes thatโ€™s a double edge sword, but Iโ€™d much rather not have to use a dedicated app just for one thing. Hot Take: text and call (including video) should be on open source protocols

Isn't that basically what XMPP is ?

I sideload all my apps because the Google play store is not on my phone.

[โ€“] Sunshine@piefed.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

It has to run Genshin Impact natively or else!

[โ€“] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 11 points 2 weeks ago

is that... Bruce Buscemi ?

[โ€“] Turret3857@infosec.pub 5 points 2 weeks ago

I want to support postmarket but none of the devices I own get past boot stage, and I don't really know how to help with that.
