I was actually bummed when netflix stopped their dvd service. I preferred that to streaming. Not everything is available on streaming. Plus the can only buy bullshit streaming services (amazon) try to pull is annoying.

the limits on streaming has to do with licensing, not the media used.

If I recall correctly, Netflix had an offer from Redbox to buy their DVD by mail service. Netflix turned them down.

Pretty sure there's nothing stopping anyone that wants to do this. Aside from the accountants and VCs who think (probably quite accurately) that there's no way to do it profitably anymore.
