Image, and a considerable amount of the preamble's analysis, comes from this article in People's Dispatch.

A week ago, the Bolivian left-wing party, the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), currently led by Luis Arce, decisively lost the round of elections against the right-wing. This comes after a prolonged period of "infighting" between Arce, and Morales, who previously led the MAS prior to the 2019 coup which briefly installed Jeanine Anez.

I put infighting in quotes because despite the nominal similarities between Arce and Morales, it is clear that this is not merely a counterproductive battle between two men - instead, the Bolivian left has arrived at a time of unavoidable conflict between two competing strategies. The electoral strategy is represented by Arce, who has aligned himself with a more middle-class-oriented campaign that is more economically liberal, whereas Morales represents a more working-class-oriented campaign that seeks to go further than tepid reform.

Such a conflict between electoralism and revolutionary action is inevitable in any and every developing country that 1) possesses a functioning left-wing party or organization, and 2) is under internal and/or external pressure by capitalists. This crisis must be resolved eventually - and this electoral failure is how such a crisis is manifesting right now. So while the Bolivian left has indeed lost the election, it is not yet defeated. The revolutionary campaign can, if it is willing, still ultimately stand triumphant. But what must be done is a real movement towards socialism, which goes beyond technocrats reforming from above, and instead transforms the state into a full political project of the working class, in which their movements, organizations, and protests are genuinely empowered. Such a project will involve repression by the forces of reaction, not least by the United States, but it is the only road left to take.

Iran's parl. launches emergency plan to exit NPT by Mehr News Agency

Article

The deputy chairman of the Parliament's Article 90 Commission Hossein Ali Haji Deligani told local Iranian media on Friday night that the parliament has begun drafting an emergency three-part plan for a complete withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and said that this plan will be uploaded to the parliament's system tomorrow so that it can go through the legal process for review and approval in the parliament's public sessions next week.

The lawmaker said that the Iranian MPs move is a response to the Thursday move by three European powers in formally activating the process of snapback of the UN sanctions on Iran within 30 days.

He also said that the parliament will take other actions to make the three European state regret their action against Iran.

Haji Deligani explained that according to the three-part emergency plan in the parliament, Iran will withdraw from the NPT and the so-called Additional Protocol.

Tehran will also suspend any negotiations with the United States and three European countries, he said, adding that, " monitoring (inspection) cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency will end."

Israel recently carried out a wave of airstrikes and naval strikes on the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, and reportedly in Amran Governorate too. The strikes are rumoured to have targeted senior leadership figures in the Ansarallah/Houthi movement, and occurred while Abdul Malik al-Houthi's pre recorded weekly speech was on TV. The results are unknown at this time, with Ansarallah/Yemeni aligned news outlets stating that Israel is confused and hit nothing of importance, and no official comment from Israel on the reported targets, just that the strikes occurred.

Ok, what's the deal with Robert Fico, PM of Slovakia, and his party? Reading the party's wikipedia page and they seem pretty unique among European parties in power. Pro-communist states but not communist, super homophobic and kind of sexist, consistently anti-imperialist but Islamophobic. It's a weird mix. Anyone got Takes?

🇾🇪 Yemeni Presidency: — In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

"Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah. Some of them have fulfilled their vow by death, and some are still waiting, and they have not changed their commitment in the least." This is the truth of Allah Almighty.

In triumph for the oppression of the Palestinian people, Yemen waged the battle of the Promised Conquest and the Sacred Jihad, achieving great honor and offering convoys of martyrs from the heroes of the Armed Forces and other sons of the great Yemeni people who carried the banner and pledged to Allah to remain steadfast in truth, no matter the cost.

Today, amidst the open battle with the "israeli" enemy entity, we announce to our people and nation a new constellation of great martyrs from the national leaders who represent the Yemeni people in all its spectrums. We declare the martyrdom of the fighter Ahmed Ghalib Al-Rahawi, Prime Minister in the Government of Change and Construction, along with a number of his fellow ministers. The criminal, treacherous "israeli" enemy targeted them in a regular workshop held by the government to evaluate its activities and performance during a year of its work. Others of their companions were also wounded with moderate and serious injuries and are under medical care. This occurred on Thursday afternoon, the fifth of Rabi' al-Awwal 1447 AH.

We reassure our great Yemeni people and pledge to them that the government, with the help of Allah Almighty, will fulfill its role in the framework of managing affairs, and institutions will continue to provide their services to the steadfast, patient, struggling Yemeni people. It will not be affected, no matter the extent of the calamity... and the blood of the great martyrs will be fuel and motivation to continue on the same path.

We affirm to our great Yemeni people, to the oppressed Palestinian people, to all the sons of our nation, and to all free people in the world, that we continue our authentic stance in supporting and aiding the people of Gaza, and in building our armed forces and developing their capabilities to face all challenges and dangers, just as our great Yemeni people are present in all fields and arenas with all determination, will, and faith.

Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return, and Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.

Immortality and mercy for the martyrs. And healing for the wounded And freedom for the prisoners And glory and victory for our dear people and for all the free people of the nation. 7 Rabi' al-Awwal 1447 AH August 30, 2025

U.S. Planned for 1,763 F-35As But at Current Pace, They Won't Arrive Until 2050s

U.S. Air Force has received less than a third of planned F-35s, sparking debate over their relevance in 20–30 years. The U.S. Air Force earlier this year received its milestone 500th fifth-generation F-35A fighter jet, which was delivered to the 125th Fighter Wing. With this number, these aircraft currently remain the second most numerous type in the U.S. Air Force after the multirole F-16 fighters. The delivery of the milestone jet was confirmed to Air and Space Forces Magazine by both the U.S. Air Force and Lockheed Martin. A company representative emphasized that together they are celebrating "the delivery of more than 500 F-35 aircraft into their squadrons, adding to a combat-proven global fleet that provides peace through strength for the U.S and its allies.

It is important to note, as Defense Express highlights, that this figure refers specifically to jets delivered to the U.S. Air Force. In total, Lockheed Martin had already marked the production of the 1,000th F-35 aircraft in January 2024. Although 500 aircraft is a significant number, more than 1,200 remain to be delivered to reach the original target. Back in the 2000s, the U.S. Air Force outlined a goal of acquiring a total of 1,763 F-35 stealth fighters. However, even with the procurement of 48 aircraft per year, it would take until the 2050s to reach such numbers. Already today, discussions are underway within the service about whether to eventually halt the F-35 program for a simple reason — will it still be relevant 30 years from now?

At one point, there were even considerations to cap the fleet at the current 500 aircraft, though it appears that decision did not gain support. Another noteworthy detail is that the budget request for 2026 includes funding for just 24 aircraft, not 48 as previously planned.

Israel Katz (Minister of Defense): "When Brazilian President Lula @LulaOficial disrespected the memory of the Holocaust during my tenure as Foreign Minister, I declared him persona non grata in Israel until he apologized."

"Now he has revealed his true colors as an avowed anti-Semite and supporter of Hamas by withdrawing Brazil from the IHRA—the international body created to combat anti-Semitism and hatred against Israel—placing the country alongside regimes such as Iran, which openly denies the Holocaust and threatens to destroy the State of Israel."

"As Israel's Defense Minister, I affirm: we will know how to defend ourselves against the axis of evil of radical Islam, even without the help of Lula and his allies. Shame on the wonderful Brazilian people and Israel's many friends in Brazil that this is their president. Better days are yet to come for the relationship between our countries."

Exclusive: Maker of Ukraine's new Flamingo cruise missile facing corruption probe

The country's anti-corruption agency is looking into Fire Point's alleged ties to Zelensky's former associate, and whether the firm inflated contracts with the state. Ukraine's anti-corruption agency has been investigating the country's star deep-strike drone company — Fire Point — over concerns it misled the government on pricing and deliveries, five sources with knowledge of the investigation told the Kyiv Independent. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau, or NABU, is also looking into the co-owner of President Volodymyr Zelensky's former film studio as the alleged ultimate beneficiary of the company, sources said.

Until recently, the weapons maker was virtually unknown outside of Ukraine's defense circles, despite appearing to be one of the largest — if not the largest — recipient of Defense Ministry drone budget funds, according to documents obtained by the Kyiv Independent. But over the past weeks, Fire Point has gone on a charm offensive, promoting its FP-1 deep-strike drones and "Flamingo" cruise missile in Western media. In his first public comments about the weapon, Zelensky last week called the Flamingo Ukraine's "most successful" missile the country has in its arsenal to defend against Russia's nearly four-year full-scale invasion. Ukraine has prioritized developing long-range strike drones and cruise missiles to hit Russian targets far behind the front lines and slow Moscow's war machine.

As part of the investigation, NABU is probing concerns that Fire Point inflated either the value of its components or the number of drones it delivers to the military, or both, according to the sources, who include current and former government officials and industry representatives, all of whom agreed to speak on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation and company details. When contacted, a spokesperson for NABU declined to comment, saying the agency could not discuss it "as it concerns the secrecy of investigations." Fire Point confirmed the existence of an investigation to the Kyiv Independent but downplayed its significance, denying the accusations and portraying the investigation as based on rumors spread by opponents and part of wider probes into Ukraine's defense procurement system. "It makes no sense to look for the secrets where there are no secrets," Iryna Terekh, Fire Point’s chief technology officer, told the Kyiv Independent.

Wartime secrecy has kept weapons production largely in the shadows. While it is currently unclear how far along NABU's investigation into Fire Point is, the probe marks one of the most significant known inquiries into Ukraine’s fast-growing drone and missile industry — and into its new darlings of defense production. It also comes on the heels of a government crackdown on NABU last month, widely seen as a response to the agency’s scrutiny of Zelensky’s associates. The current NABU investigation is tracing the firm's ultimate ownership to Timur Mindich, a businessman who co-owns Kvartal 95, the television studio started by Zelensky, three of the sources said. As the investigation is ongoing, no charges have been brought against any individuals or entities. "Rumors are going around pretty actively that (Fire Point's) drones are linked with Mindich, and I have every conviction that this version of events corresponds to reality," the government source, who is familiar with the investigation's materials, told the Kyiv Independent. NABU did not respond to any questions regarding Mindich. The Kyiv Independent was able to reach an attorney for Mindich, who said they had no information on a connection between their client and Fire Point.

Rise of Ukraine's drone prodigy

According to documents seen by the Kyiv Independent, the firm sold Hr 13.2 billion worth of its FP-1 long-range drones — roughly $320 million — to the government in 2024. Per its annual budget, the Defense Ministry spent a total of Hr 43 billion ($1.04 billion) on drones that year, giving Fire Point just under a third of the total. Terekh told the Kyiv Independent that the firm sold around 2,000 long-range drones in 2024. The firm sells the drones for roughly $55,000 each, which would total around $110 million in sales. Between 2023 and 2024, the company's revenue, according to publicly available corporate documentation, grew from $4 million to over $100 million. Terekh told the Kyiv Independent that Fire Point's staff grew from 18 in 2023 to 2,200 employees in the present day. A source with knowledge of Fire Point’s contracts says the company is set to receive more than $1 billion in 2025 from government contracts. Terekh acknowledged receiving funds via the "Danish model" of European funding going to Fire Point via the Defense Ministry. Fire Point also received funding as part of a 5-billion-euro deal with the German government, announced in May, Terekh told the Kyiv Independent. The former government official, who had direct knowledge of the contracts, told the Kyiv Independent that among drone companies receiving government funds, Fire Point was "without a doubt the top."

A recent Associated Press interview with Fire Point reported the firm was producing 100 of its long-range FP-1 drones per day. Those numbers would total around $2 billion annually. Terekh told the Kyiv Independent that 100 in a day is the maximum the firm can produce. Between contracts, they do not hit those quotas, but they are set to produce roughly 9,000 this year, she said. Those figures don't include its FP-5 "Flamingo" cruise missiles that it similarly began advertising recently. It is currently impossible to confirm Fire Point's production figures independently. The effectiveness of its weapons is also difficult to gauge, as the government does not publicize that information. Terekh put the percentage of their drones that hit their Russian targets at 55-60%. According to the Kyiv Independent's reporting, the FP-1 is today an effective deep-strike drone, but that did not seem to be the case in 2024 — when the company was already selling large quantities of the drone to the Defense Ministry. The two industry sources allege that within a short time after formation in 2023, the company was turning out barely functional drones while receiving massive preferential funding from the government. While producing ineffective drones in its early days is neither illegal nor necessarily unethical, a company that benefits from political favoritism while delivering a subpar product raises questions about oversight and accountability. In the case of Fire Point, it looks to have been designated as the heir apparent of Ukraine’s deep-strike ambitions from the outset.

The people behind Fire Point

According to the source in the government, the investigation began roughly four months ago — shortly before a high-profile crackdown by the Zelensky administration to curtail NABU's independence last month. The government source told the Kyiv Independent that Fire Point's origins "seem to be a priority for (NABU’s investigation) at the moment." There are no obvious links between Fire Point and Mindich. It’s not clear how the NABU investigation is tracing the connection to Zelensky’s former business associate. The people formally linked to Fire Point are new to the drone industry. Following the start of the full-scale invasion, the two fundraised for a non-profit organization called Civic Hub, which turned into a long-range drone project, according to the NGO’s website and social media posts. Terekh also ran Frieden, a charity fund based in Germany. Skalyha, for his part, is a veteran of Ukraine's film industry and did the location scouting for Ukrainian movies "Luxembourg, Luxembourg" and "Egregor."

...

Terekh's background is equally unrelated to the defense industry. Her previous firm, the Terekh.Group, created artful concrete installations, for which she ended up on Forbes Ukraine’s 30 under 30 list in 2022. Then, in December of last year, she was selected to be on a business council that met in the President's Office, in the ranks of many of the wealthiest businesspeople in the country. Sira Rechovyna, the corporate entity behind Terekh.Group, has never reported an annual revenue above $70,000. And at the end of April, Yermak named both Terekh and Skalyha to a new government council of 82 businesspeople, alongside business leaders from cellular giant Kyivstar and Ukraine’s answer to Amazon, Rozetka. In that council, Terekh was listed under Terekh.Group.

The Kyiv Independent reached out to the President's Office, asking about any connections it has with Fire Point, but did not receive a reply by the time of publication. "Nobody can choose between Yermak and Mindich as to who we are associated with," Terekh quipped, dismissing high-powered political backing as rumors. She also blamed the Digital Transformation Ministry for targeting Fire Point with rumors, saying that NABU had "copy-pasted" claims from the ministry in its investigation. Terekh acknowledged broad issues of corruption in Ukraine’s defense procurement and their effect on the front line. "I understand why people are so skeptical — I would also be skeptical." "The worst possible human thing that can happen during a war is to steal from the war," said Terekh.

Good article from Kawsachun News about the situation in Bolivia:

https://kawsachun.com/five-myths-about-the-crisis-of-the-left-in-bolivia-by-sacha-llorenti/

articleSacha Llorenti is Bolivian, a lawyer, former minister, and former president of the UN Security Council.

I have read very carefully the comments of many comrades, people whom I love and respect greatly, who simplify the situation of the crisis of the left in Bolivia. I know that these criticisms come from honest people, born of genuine concern and solidarity with the Bolivian people.

However, a number of common points arise that deserve explanation, given the unique characteristics of Bolivia, its social organizations, and its left.

  1. “The fracture of the left is a struggle of personal ambitions”

It is not egos, lack of generosity, or pettiness that marked the break between social organizations and the government of Luis Arce. This is a reductionism that hides a lack of understanding of what the Political Instrument of social organizations that came to conquer political power in Bolivia in December 2005 means.

This instrument is the sum of the largest indigenous and peasant organizations in the country, in a country that is, needless to say, predominantly indigenous.

These organizations are structured into unions, union sub-centrals, provincial centrals, departmental federations, and national confederations. It is these structures that debate and decide the course of the instrument. These are not personal decisions or whims, but organic decisions that cut across Bolivian territory.

These organizations were systematically attacked by the government of Luis Arce, who, as a result of manipulations of the justice system, managed to take away their party acronym.

So, the break with Arce, among many other reasons, was due to his decision to ban the entire movement organized around the Political Instrument, his catastrophic economic management, and serious allegations of corruption.

Furthermore, these organizations decided that their candidate should be Evo Morales. The demonstrations and protests against the ban were met with repression, an attempt on Evo’s life, and the violent takeover of several union headquarters. As of this writing, dozens of indigenous leaders are still in prison or in hiding.

  1. “No one sought unity”

Although Luis Arce’s government used the same tactics as Lenin Moreno when he banned Rafael Correa, Evo Morales, and the social organizations of the Political Instrument proposed several alternatives to prevent implosion. First, they proposed holding closed internal primaries with the participation of the party’s membership, which exceeded one million registered members. Then, when this was rejected, he proposed holding open primaries in the Argentine style. That proposal was also rejected. Finally, Evo Morales proposed conducting Mexican-style polls to select the candidate, with a commitment to fully support whoever was favored. That proposal was also rejected because the intention was always to politically annul Evo Morales at all costs and, therefore, the organic decisions. Andrónico Rodríguez also did not want primaries to be held.

  1. “Andrónico Rodríguez’s candidacy represented the popular bloc”

Andrónico was the young politician who could best represent the interests of the Bolivian popular bloc. An indigenous person, union leader, political scientist, and president of the Senate, he was seen by all as the natural heir to Evo Morales’ political legacy.

However, he committed the political crime of launching his candidacy behind the backs of the social organizations that make up the Political Instrument. It was through a press conference that the indigenous and peasant leadership learned that Andrónico had made the individual decision to launch his candidacy, without it being the result of a decision by the structures of those organizations.

It was a personal candidacy that dealt one of the hardest blows to the Political Instrument because it usurped a representation that had not been conferred upon him, legitimized the proscription of the popular movement, and broke with the logic of collective decision-making. Rodríguez was expelled from his union and his peasant federation. His very low percentage in the elections is proof that his candidacy did not have popular support. To make matters worse, his lists of candidates included people who were clearly right-wing.

  1. “The null vote is useless”

The decision to campaign for the null vote was not an individual or capricious decision by Evo Morales. It was a collective decision that took time to make and was based on the logic that these elections were illegitimate because they were held while banning the country’s largest political movement. Despite the brevity of the campaign, the null vote reached nearly 20 percent of the votes, when the average of all previous elections was closer to 3.5 percent. It was a protest vote, a disciplined vote, a vote that shows that social organizations continue to be the soul and essence of the Bolivian left.

  1. “It is the twilight of Evo Morales and the Bolivian left”

The election results show that the Bolivian left is based on indigenous and peasant social organizations, that Evo Morales remains the undisputed leader, and that this is where the real opposition to the right wing that will take political power in November lies.

Just as happened after the coup d’état, it was these organizations and this leadership that managed to restore democracy. After the series of blows that this time came from the Arce government and Rodríguez’s breakaway, it will be these organizations that will chart the course that the popular and revolutionary movement in Bolivia must follow.

Final note on equidistance

A call to the Latin American left: there can be no equidistance between those who betray and those who are betrayed, between those who seek to destroy our political organizations and those who defend them, between those who proscribe and those who are proscribed, between those who seek to assassinate our comrades and those who are the victims, between those who imprison indigenous leaders and those who are imprisoned. Our equidistance in the face of injustice is a weapon for our enemies.

As José Martí rightly said: “Men cannot be more perfect than the sun. The sun burns with the same light with which it shines. The sun has spots. The grateful see the light. The ungrateful see the spots.”

Algeria Urges UN to Halt “Greater Israel” Project and Protect Two-State Solution - Telesur English

Article

Algeria has called on the United Nations Security Council to take urgent action to stop what it describes as the “Greater Israel” project, warning that it threatens the viability of the two-state solution and exacerbates the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In an official statement released by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government condemned the UN’s recent declaration of famine in Gaza as a “dangerous precedent.”

Algeria asserted that the famine is not the result of natural or unavoidable circumstances, but rather a “political decision” stemming from the “planning and management of the Israeli occupation.”

The statement links the famine directly to Israel’s alleged strategy of displacement and reoccupation of Gaza, framing it as part of the broader “Greater Israel” project.

Algeria denounced what it called Tel Aviv’s “genocidal policies” and described the situation as a “war of extermination” against the population of Gaza.

As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Algeria reaffirmed its commitment to diplomatic efforts in support of the Palestinian people. It called for immediate measures to end what it termed an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe” and urged the international community to accelerate the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

The appeal comes amid growing international concern over the worsening conditions in Gaza, where famine-related deaths have surged and infrastructure has collapsed under continued military pressure.

Cambricon Technologies Corp Ltd, an up-and-coming Chinese GPU producer, reaches 477% stock increase this year — South China Morning Post.

I expect Cambricon to be a household name shortly and may even incite the AI bubble burst after proving that Nvidia is not the only company that can make capable data center hardware.

Switzerland in 3-Level F-35 Trap: First Losses Near $1B, Next Steps Look Even Tougher

If Switzerland ditches the F-35 for a European jet, it faces a three-layer trap where money and time are lost at each step. In 2021 Switzerland chose the F-35 to replace its F/A-18C/D fleet, placing an order in 2022 for 36 aircraft worth 6.25 billion Swiss francs (about 6.55 billion USD at the time). But now the country finds itself in a trap of this procurement. First, the contract did not include a fixed price, and the cost has already risen to 7.3 billion francs (9.1 billion USD). Second, Switzerland has been hit by the 39% additional tariffs on Swiss exports introduced by Trump. The blow to watches and coffee has become a major catalyst for the growing calls to cancel the deal. Yet whatever option Switzerland takes will mean losses of both money and time.

trump-drenched I am altering the deal, pray I don't alter it any further

The main problem is that the service life of the 30 existing F/A-18C/Ds ends in 2030. If Switzerland cancels the F-35, signs a new contract for an alternative, and then waits for deliveries, the country risks being left without a combat air force. Therefore, it would be necessary to invest in extending the service life of the current fighters. The government has estimated the cost of extending the Hornets' service to 2035–2037 at 0.8–1 billion francs (about 1–1.24 billion USD). That equals roughly 33–41 million USD per aircraft for an additional 5–7 years of service. But this is only the first level of the trap created by the decision to buy the F-35 three years ago. If Switzerland truly abandons the F-35 in favor of a European alternative, it will have only three choices: Rafale, Eurofighter, and Gripen.

Three years ago Switzerland calculated that 36 F-35s would cost 6.55 billion USD in total, or about 182 million USD per jet, including the whole package. The latest known Rafale export price, from the deal with Serbia, is 225 million euros per aircraft. That is not only much higher than the F-35's old price, but almost equal to its current cost for Switzerland of about 253 million USD (220 million euros). On top of that, Rafale production is already booked with a delivery queue stretching up to nine years. Gripen, on the other hand, is likely the cheapest Western 4+ generation fighter currently available, with a recent Thai contract priced at 138.25 million USD per unit without weapons. But the F-35 trap still applies: Gripen uses the American F414-GE-39E engine from General Electric, along with several other U.S. components. That means Switzerland would need U.S. approval to purchase Gripen — approval that may not come if the F-35 deal is canceled, straining relations with Washington. As for Eurofighter, its latest export price is unknown since it hasn't been sold abroad in a long time, but it is unlikely to be much cheaper than Rafale or F-35. All of this means that walking away from the F-35 program is not at all a simple decision for Switzerland.

it's probably never going to happen, but it'd be incredibly funny if Western countries start buying Chinese jets since the Western MIC is apparently incapable of actually delivering anything within a reasonable timeframe some-controversy
