If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

This is a Stygian Owl who's recovering from a badly fractured wing. This species is highly adaptable. They can make a home in deciduous or evergreen forests as well as in open areas with patchy forest. These birds have been found living at elevations from sea level to 10,000 feet.

Stygian owls make their homes in South America, parts of Central America, the Caribbean, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. There have been three (3) documented sightings of these owls in the USA.

This owl's versatility continues in its' diet. This species takes in a fairly wide range of prey including birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, and insects.

In a rare (for this species) display of narrowness, Stygian Owls hunt only at night.

On a pleasant note, the species is not globally threatened although it's status varies a great deal insome parts of its range.

The car bill I'm used to. It's those doctor visits that leave me like this!

Stygian is a very cool word.

A lot of articles will try to make it seem scary with its eyes all refracting artificial lighting, but these guys are cute and silly in their natural state.
