Let's be clear though

The payment processors did the blocking but the requests came from some religious group that wants the entire world to be as miserable as they are.

Fuck all religions and fuck them for always wanting their claws in everything to try and control everything and everyone

[–] meliaesc@lemmy.world 5 points 7 hours ago

Appeasing rambling cults is not acceptable.

[–] rickdg@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Can you boycott visa/mastercard when paying at steam or do most methods just end up using them anyway?

[–] capt_wolf@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Run the payment through PayPal direct to your bank account.

Alternatively, you could add the funds directly to your steam wallet using your regular card and say "Fuck you, you can't even stop me!" to them.

[–] BigPotato@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

But then you support PayPal.

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

I’ve wondered if a good boycott method would be starting a different credit card - IF any of them have made statements about foregoing censorship. But I could be corrected if it turns out others like Discover end up going through V/MC systems somehow.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 13 points 20 hours ago

I want Visa and MC to show us a time they were prosecuted by the government for processing a payment they shouldn't have.

All data carriers, like ISPs, payment processors, email services, etc. should have NO control, nor even oversight or input, over the content of their transmission or the purposes thereof.

Imagine if all roads were privately own and they wanted to know every detail about those traveling on their roadways. Origin and destination, every detail about you, about your vehicle, what you have in your car, etc. And imagine they could decide that certain cars were allowed on their roads, you weren't allowed to use their roads to get to certain destinations, they get lobbied by bigots to not allow gays to drive on their roads, or people that have porn in their vehicle. There's no public alternative, and sometimes no private alternative, and even private alternatives do the exact same thing... if we wouldn't allow that sort of surveillance, interference, and autocratic control with or means of movement, why should we allow it with our means of trade.

Maybe it is time for an anti-trust investigation.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

in this administration?

good luck....

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Visa and Mastercard operate worldwide and as far as I know many games got blocked in other countries too right? Because that would mean a lot of countries could be having anti trust investigations.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 21 hours ago

Might dust off Taft-Hartley to bust some unions though

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Just use whichever payment processor is the lesser evil to push them towards getting better.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Because that's working out super great with politics!

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I use my local bank for that.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Banks and payment processors are not the same thing though.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 1 points 19 hours ago

And yet I can pay directly from my bank account in the steam store.

[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Buying from steam I currently have the option of Mastercard or visa. They don't accept the other ways I have, and it's difficult for me to get the ones they accept.

As I understand it they are both doing it in coordination.

Given the show this meme is taken from, I can't tell if the quote itself is unaltered or not. 🤣

Ghost Stories?

Fill the hole, hole filler.

Still itch.io deindexed all nsfw games

Edit: Okay so they now reindexed them.

Today, we are re-indexing free adult NSFW content. We are still in ongoing discussions with payment processors and will be re-introducing paid content slowly to ensure we can confidently support the widest range of creators in the long term.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 33 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Would you rather they had shut down because nobody is able to pay them anymore? They complied with the demands for the time being because they have a business to run - and then they immediately started looking for a solution.

[–] MyDarkestTimeline01@ani.social 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't believe people fault itch.io or steam for what they did. You can be upset with an action and still understand why it was done. It's the same mental allowance you would give to someone if they agreed to cover your shift but the morning of their kid got sick and you had to come in anyway. Sure, you're upset but you also understand that someone would need to take care of their kid.

So we can be upset that NSFW games were delisted. But the other options would be them only getting paid through physically bought Steam and Itich.io gift cards.

I wonder why the payment processors went on the backfoot.

[–] Zron@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

Immediate and harsh criticism.

[–] bappity@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

and stripe apparently plans to allow NSFW content in future, which is super promising.

I hope itch.io finds an alternative in the meantime though

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago

allow

Shouldn't be their decision in the first place. Process the fucking payments, payment processors.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

One of these moron payment companies is going to realize what's up sooner or later.

Patreon is for creators to do creative stuff professionally. Onlyfans tried to be the same thing. The only difference was they allowed NSFW stuff. Now guess which one pulls significantly more revenue?

If you become the payment processor for NSFW stuff, you can do whatever the hell you want and still be rolling in cash.

[–] rdri@lemmy.world 51 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They just missed very old news about how games that depict illegal activities do not really cause people to do illegal activities. Therefore they can't be illegal themselves.

[–] prex@aussie.zone 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Plus, where do you draw the line?
Social media where users discuss illegal activities? Movies that depict illegal activities?
There are a lot of illegal activities in the bible.

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

I committed genocide in age of empires 2 yesterday, but lewd games is where I draw the line!

[–] shyguyblue@lemmy.world 59 points 1 day ago

"Just dig the hole, hole digger"

Not to mention their little gaslighting memos they sent out trying to say it wasn't them that told them they wouldn't process those payments.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

The good timeline.

[–] bryndos@fedia.io 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Damn, am I really going to have to start going to bank regularly, getting cash from the cashier, and boycotting card-only places.

Meh, I guess I've nowt better to with my time.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Try to find cash discounts too, so you don't subsidize other people's credit card usage.

[–] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 day ago

Jesus girl would side with the payment processor.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Surely they are being pressured by the governments, right?
