I work in retail, and I used to help wherever I was needed. If a customer looked lost or had a question, I’d step in, even if it wasn’t technically my department.
Then a supervisor told me, “Stick to your area. Let the others handle their own zones.”

So the next day, a woman was clearly struggling with a heavy item two aisles over. I was five feet away. We made eye contact. She asked if I could help. I smiled and said, “Sorry, I’m not assigned to that section.”
