Guy, there’s the Black Power Ranger and the Yellow Power Ranger, with a black guy and an Asian girl respectively.

They knew.

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Thats what I'm saying!

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 13 points 7 hours ago

It really depends where you put that small pause.

Its like saying spider-man without the hyphen.

Wasn't the white power ranger the green power ranger first, or am I misremembering the story (it's been a while, sorry)?

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 8 points 4 hours ago

He was.

I remember only because at the time they were advertising that the green power ranger would be getting a power upgrade and I said to my older brother that I bet he would become the white power ranger (not being aware of the connotations at the time, nor anything else other than the kid's show).

He said that wasn't possible. How would they display the trademark white diamonds, he asked? It still boggles my mind that that was his only reasoning.

Yeah it's like, "Srsly, you don't hear it?"

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 59 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Only when taken out of context.

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 13 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Context is: "Hey honey, the clown cancelled for little Bobby's 4th birthday, do you want me to call the White Power Ranger to replace them?"

[–] Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.ca 21 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Makes sense still. There are several colors of Power Rangers, and they are always referred to as the [Color] Power Ranger.

Does this sound off to you?

Hey honey, the clown cancelled for little Bobby's 4th birthday, do you want me to call the Blue Power Ranger to replace them?

To which the wife responds with "what are you? A KREE LOVER?! I fucking knew it, you thought I really believed Yon-Rogg was just a close friend at work?!"

[–] whimsy@lemmy.zip 48 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

(white) (power ranger), not (white power) (ranger)

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 42 points 10 hours ago (6 children)

I'm 41. Which means I was a kid when the original came out.

In all my years of knowing of the power rangers, I've never once thought of it as (white power)(ranger).

I did however go from thinking Rita Repulsa was grotesque as a kid, to thinking "Damn, she's kinda hott!" as an adult. Plus she has that stick that makes her monster grow.

.......I think every guy would find that usrful.

[–] bizarroland@fedia.io 5 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

I saw a movie that had the actress that played Rita Repulsa in it as the mail order bride of a random side character who would occasionally sneak away to the bar across the street from their house and shoot ping pong balls out of her pussy.

It's not really relevant to this conversation, but every single time Rita Repulsa is mentioned in some thread somewhere, I always go back to seeing the ping-pong balls flying from between her legs.

I think it was the movie about drag queens going across Australia.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

This sounds like a perfect movie for the "Terrible Movies Night" my friends and I have every once in a while where we emulate MST3K!

Do you know the name? I really don't want "Rita Repulsa pussy ping pong balls" in my search history...

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

They really should have included that storyline in Power Rangers, TBH.

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

The internet proves again, that you will always be able to find someone who shares your (degenerate) opinion.

If Rita wanted this monster to grow, all she had to do was back that dumpy up.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Dumps like a truck, truck, truck, horns like what, what, what…

I just went and had a looksie. Not nearly as repulsive in pics as I remember. I think attitude might be half of it.

[–] scytale@lemmy.zip 23 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

I grew up calling them “ ranger”. I don’t think anyone, at least in my part of the world at the time, called each member in full as a power ranger; only as a group.

[–] TheFunkyMonk@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Northwest US, same.

[–] HenryDorsett@lemmy.world 8 points 9 hours ago

Southern US.

I was kid at the time it originally aired in America.

I agree, its Ranger, or as a group, The Power Rangers.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

Same and I’m from the southeast us.

its his job title, not necessarily his ideology

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 3 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

I mean, they made the Asian girl the yellow ranger, the "Native American" (not sure if the actor actually is but the character was) the Red Ranger, the black guy the Black Ranger, with Basic White People as gender-defaults Pink and Blue.

The White Power Ranger might be innocent but the producers knew what they were doing. He's even more powerful than the others put together...

To be fair, Walter Jones (Zack) was given a choice of which color to be. After thinking that there was no way in hell they would let him be Red, he chose Black so he could be a Black superhero/role model.

Thuy was also the second one cast for the Yellow ranger after the original quit when she saw how shitty they were getting paid (which would eventually lead to Austin, Walter, and Thuy quitting in the second season when contract negotiations fell through)

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Are you saying he lives 2 lives where one may be ashamed of the other?

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 11 points 11 hours ago (4 children)

Only if you expect the pink power ranger to go mincing about throwing glitter grenades.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 38 minutes ago
