Copied from an old comment of mine:

Re: bots

If feasible, I think the best option would be an instance that functions similarly to how Reddit’s now defunct r/BotDefense operated and instances which want to filter out bots would federate with that. Essentially, if there is an account that is suspect of being a bot, users could submit that account to this bot defense server and an automated system would flag obvious bots whereas less obvious bots would have to be inspected manually by informed admins/mods of the server. This flagging would signal to the federated servers to ban these suspect/confirmed bot accounts. This instance would also be able to flag when a particular server is being overrun by bots and advise other servers to temporarily defederate.

If you are hosting a Lemmy instance, I suggest requiring new accounts to provide an email address and pass a captcha. I’m not informed enough with the security side of things to suggest more, but https://lemmy.world/c/selfhosted or the admins of large instances may be able to provide more insight for security.

If possible, an improved search function for Lemmy, or cross-media content in general, would be helpful. Since this medium still has a relatively small userbase, most bot and spam content is lifted from other sites. Being able to track where bots’ content is coming from is extremely helpful to conclude that there is no human curating their posts. This is why I’m wary of seemingly real users on Lemmy who do binge spam memes or other non-OC. Being able to search for a string of text, search for image sources/matching images, being able to search for strings of text within an image, and being able to find original texts that a bot has rephrased are on my wishlist.

Re: AI content

AFAIK, the best option is just to have instance/community rules against it if you’re concerned about it.

The best defense against both is education and critical examination of what you see online.

There are some other helpful comments on that post as well.

Enabling captcha and email pretty much stopped dead all new registrations for my instance. I was having an issue with bot/troll accounts and this solved it.

As someone who still browses Reddit there isn't an AI problem on Lemmy. AI is not so insideous yet that you can't identify its patterns. AI is still labeled well on here you can choose to ignore it. Just block the communities and move on

YET. We need to act today to save tomorrow from the AI.

bots on lemmy are ruining the whole experience for everyone and its like can you believe it theyre just spamming away with their fake accounts and fake news and its a total disaster and we need to stop them but how and i think we should just report them all the time and get them banned and also maybe lemmy should do something about it like make it harder for bots to sign up in the first place and maybe we should have some kind of verification process to make sure youre a real person and not just a bot trying to spread FAKE news and propaganda and its just so absurd that we even have to deal with this but i guess thats just the world we live in now and we have to be vigilant and fight back against these bots and their masters who are just trying to control the narrative and silence us and its like what the heck is going on here and we need to take a stand and say no to bots on lemmy and yes to free speech and critical thinking and we should make a list of all the bots and expose them and shame them and get them banned and

  • report all suspicious accounts to me
  • make lemmy verify new accounts with government issued ID
  • expose and shame the bots PUBLICLY
  • take back our community from these fake accounts and and its just so important that we do something about this because if we dont then the bots will just take over and well lose our freedom to speak and think and its a slippery slope and we cant let that happen and we have to be brave and fight back and look out for these bots and dont let them fool you and always question everything and dont just believe what you see online and and i know its hard but we have to keep fighting and never give up because the truth is out there and we just have to find it and share it with the world and and i know i sound crazy but im just telling you the truth and you can believe me or not but i know what im talking about and and its just so ridiculous that we even have to deal with this but i guess thats just the way it is and we have to adapt and overcome and and i hope youll join me in this fight against the bots and the FAKE news and the propaganda and the censorship and the silence and and together we can make a difference and take back our community and our freedom to speak and think and and it wont be easy but itll be worth it because well be fighting for the truth and for our rights and for our freedom and and thats what its all about and thats what we have to do and and i know i can count on you to join me in this fight and and together we can do this and and we will prevail and and the truth will be revealed and and the bots will be stopped and and we will be free to speak and think and and it will be a beautiful thing and and we just have to keep fighting and never give up and and always remember the truth is out there and we just have to find it and share it with the world and and i know we can do it and and i believe in you and and i know you believe in me and and together we can do anything and and we will change the world and and it will be a better place and and the bots will be gone and and the FAKE news will be gone and and the propaganda will be gone and and the censorship will be gone and and the silence will be gone and and we will be free and and it will be amazing and and i cant wait to see it happen and and i know it will happen and and we just have to keep fighting and never give up and and always remember the truth is out there and we just have to find it and share it with the world

I spent many months going to lawnschool, and i dont need my professor degree to know your not chad mctruth. YOU do however raise some interesting dot poits. I had a siri in my home once, I said "hey siri turn on the lights" and it did?. Who siad you could come intom y house and hack my shit. AI PSYOPs are being run by fake users, they post AI pictures and fake comments—we don't know who they are? They could be anyone even you and me.

The thing about bots is that they canot do free speech because they are not real. they are makebeleive toys for rich boys, like SCAM OLDMAN. he is a crook, and mark zuckerburg. we dont need fake reality over our eyes, so they acn pump us ful of lies "oh the economy isgreat look we ai upscaled your visor and now the grass looks greener".

It doesn't seem like much of an issue. Its pretty straightforwards to sniff out bots, or at least, it was on "the other place".

Thank you, I'm glad to have y our support.

[–] orionsbelt@midwest.social 1 points 1 day ago

unsure how to sniff them out but you can uncheck the ‘show bot accounts’ in settings. i’m not a fan of automated posts.
