I honestly don't see how the average working class adult find that time. I feel like gaming is a luxury for rich/middle-class teens.

I don't have kids, so I have a few hours a week for the video games. Oblivion remaster is consuming all of that time currently. I fucking love the original and this new one is just so beautiful

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Yes, with no kids. But because time is limited, it can easily become all you do with your free time.

[–] ptc075@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

Not really no. I make a point to game online a bit with my nephews on Friday nights. But the rest of the week - no, there's just too much that needs doing. In addition to working full time, cooking, and maintaining the home, now that I'm older I have also added making a point to get enough sleep and get my workouts in. That's it, that's all the time there is.

I purposely booked a week of vacation for my birthday this year where I intend to finally play Breath of the Wild. And that's it, that's the whole week. Looking forward to it.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

it's about making time.

just got a retroid pocket 5 and installed steam player on it.

I love it. I've played at least an hour every day since I've got it.

[–] qevlarr@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Sometimes, but I have to make time. So I think in gaming sessions of 30 minutes to a few hours at most, depending on how much time I have. Then maybe I can't play for a week.

This means it's quite hard to pick what I want to play. Grand strategy or Civ is out for me, takes too long. Long campaign games I never even start. Often I end up with the same few staples like CS2, or a digital board game against AI. Lately I've been enjoying Balatro a lot

If you have kids, you really don't have time. And when you do have time, you don't have the energy.

[–] callcc@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago
[–] janus2@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

no :( I play Balatro on my phone when I poop, and I boot up Minecraft about once a year...

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Didn't really get to for ages, but with a steam deck it's doable to do it after the kid's in bed to play an hour or 2 of something. You definitely have to pick other types of games than the ones I used to play tho (FPS and RTS don't really work well with the Steam deck controls).

[–] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah! Steamdeck makes it happen. Playing in short bursts and the ability to sleep the console is amazing. I hated having to sit at a desk and dedicate enough time until a save point to play. The anxiety of playing for 5 minutes and then having to quit because something came up made me not want to play at all.

Now, I game so much more than I used to.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 4 points 3 days ago

Yes, a bit at least. If your routine doesn't have any time for what you love, it's an extremely shitty situation.

I try to manage my work hours even if it hits income a bit.

[–] TemplaerDude@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago

I get an hour or so if I’m lucky.

[–] PurpleGameBoy@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

Yes, no kids yet and only working 36 hours on average.

[–] toomanypancakes@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

I have time, but not the energy. I'll usually play on the weekends some, but after work and getting dinner made I don't usually want to engage my brain much

[–] Gabadabs@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago

I have time to play videogames, and it's my primary hobby - but I also don't date nor have any interest in having kids. I imagine it's a lot harder for people with romantic lives or kids.

[–] deaddigger@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Yes i do, married and with kids

[–] Nibodhika@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I had a good chunk of time where I wasn't gaming. But when I first got my Steam Deck I went through some of my backlogged catalog, the ability to pause, sleep the deck and come back to it later and be back where I stopped in seconds was really useful. After that I remembered how much I enjoyed gaming and so made some changes in my routine to allow for some game time every now and then.

[–] fefellama@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Am thinking of getting a steam deck for the same reason. I have plenty of time to play games, but almost none of it is uninterrupted time. I NEED the ability to pause and put something down for minutes or hours at any moment to deal with real-world responsibilities.

Yes but not as much as I used to. Please bring back cheat codes and easy difficulty mode so I can actually play these things without having to grind hours of my life away.

It's a constant struggle...if I play, I feel guilty for not studying/working/spending time with my young kids. If I don't play, I feel like I'm not doing anything for *me".

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yes. I don't have kids though. Also I work in games so I can persuade myself that I'm doing market research or whatever

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Fifty plus here and yes I still play. Two fifteen minute breaks and a half hour lunch so I game during that time. Plus a couple hours on Monday nights and same on Friday nights. Gives me a little time to unwind. Definitely not middle class

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

One to two matches a day. Thats as much time that I get.

I don't play a dedicated video game setup, but I do play a merge game on my phone that's endless that I can whip out and do anywhere.

Just started AC Odyssey over again. Finished it on the hardest setting the first time around, this time I'm taking a leisurely stroll through on the default difficulty level. Fun!

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 2 days ago

I actually have time, but I often spend it doing other stuff. Once in a while, I will play some of my videogames, but I also play boardgames, which are great for my needs to socialize and interact with people

[–] MrIamsosmrt@feddit.org 3 points 3 days ago

I don't have kids so I still have plenty of free time that I could use to game. I get home from work at 5 pm and usually go to bed at 11 pm so thats 6 hours of free time during the work day. Of course some of that is used for housework and cooking but if I really want to I can game for 5 hours a day.

But often I just watch a TV show, movie or YouTube instead becauee I'm exhausted from work

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

Steamdeck in bed when it gets really busy, PC gaming when things are slow.

[–] muxika@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I find the time to do it, but is mostly with my kids and their games. I got them into my Steam library, so it works out. We're plowing through Subnautica currently, and they absolutely love it.

[–] ipkpjersi@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I've had a knee injury the past 3 weeks and counting so I've not been able to do much of anything else, so I'd say yes.

Yeah I just don’t sleep. My kids and wife go to bed and I stay up cleaning, and gaming. Also work from home so I can game on my breaks or down time. So all in all i can pack the hours in. I put 35 hours into AC shadows on the first week of release and that was on top of my job

[–] the_q@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago

Video games as a hobby is one of the cheapest ones out there. As far as having time, in my experience people that say they don't have time for it can't see the time they spend doing anything else as time spent.

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Steam Deck helps a lot. Kid wants to watch some awful Paw Patrol or whatever before bed? Sure, I can sit down and spend 20 minutes failing to make progress on The Binding of Isaac.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I usually catch five or ten minutes here and there. So, no.

[–] palarith@aussie.zone 3 points 3 days ago

Now much more selective with my time. have no patience for grind and fps’ seem samey.

I did make time for cyberpunk and bg3. Might fire up metaphor one day.
