I just can't believe the ee user who tried to deflect a hate killing of a gay man in texas into you see this is why China bad moment.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 63 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Also citing Russia's homophobic laws. Yeah, dude, I know Russia is homophobic! That's one of many reasons why I think they shouldn't have dissolved the USSR!

Not to mention that, for all of China's faults WRT LGBTQ people, I think it's borderline unheard of for the government to be so out of touch and callous in China that the police would allow a hate crime like this to go down after months of the victim complaining about their neighbors being hateful bigots.

Then gets mad at people derailing the thread, that rin originally derailed

I guess you can be an honorary hexbear admin

This is how you honour our hero? With empty felicitations?

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 38 points 3 days ago

well if we're not careful, FunkyStuff might destroy hexbear with his most enormous powers if granted even more power to wield at his whim.

Ah, this is really too bad, because I liked being on an instance that was federated with pretty much every other instance because I feel that defederation generally sucks, barring some extreme exceptions (n.b., the so-called "Tankie Triad" :D is not one of those exceptions).

As far as I know, this will only leave lemmy.sdf.org and lemmy.zip as fully federated instances. :(

Edit: I forgot to mention lemmy.ml. Also, apparently lemmy.today is also pretty good about not defederating. Lemmy.sdf.org is a bit problematic because it's not actively maintained.

[–] omegathrowaway@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 hours ago

Leminal.space is good

[–] Owl@hexbear.net 41 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Isn't lemmy.ml still federated to almost everything?

(I do not keep up with instance news, very prepared to be laughably wrong here)

[–] turtle@lemm.ee 31 points 3 days ago (4 children)

True too. I forgot that. I think I'm leery because usually the people who keep whining about the "Tankie Triad" include lemmy.ml as part of that triad and keep lobbying for other instances to defederate from it.

Reddthat.com also has a policy of federating just about everyone. I think the only instance they're defederated from is Threads.

I do wonder where I'll go if/when sdf is gone

[–] turtle@lemm.ee 15 points 3 days ago (6 children)

If you like seeing posts from all (legal) lemmy instances, it seems that lemmy.zip will be the only other lemmy instance that's federated with pretty much everyone. I mentioned lemmy.today in my post, but have since learned that they're apparently having problems with spam accounts.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Good to know. I just am always hesitant to use anything on a .zip domain

[–] turtle@lemm.ee 11 points 3 days ago

Yes, that was an unfortunate choice.

Can end up downloading bad things unintentionally. People like to hide or obscure things by putting them in a zip (while also making it easier to send files)

Proof that bullying libs works

[–] Zuzak@hexbear.net 50 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Mao had just said, "uhh the state is an oppressive institution so now we'll just dismantle everything and y'all can just organize horizontally or whatever."

The funny thing is, he kinda did. The result was these roving, undisciplined militias calling themselves Red Guards and holding (actual) struggle sessions and killing each other, and committing a bunch of atrocities.

I know there were actual historical reasons but I like to imagine that one day Mao somehow got possessed by a redditor and started doing what any "anti-tankie" would say he should do, denouncing the government as having fallen to bourgeois opportunists and calling on the people to rise up in this structureless, "anti-authoritarian" way. But since the outcome was bad, it's of course, "No, not like that."

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 41 points 3 days ago

Yeah it's a great example, and there's a lot of irony in how during this part of history Western Maoism became the main current of the left student movement. The anti-authoritarians have always been very quick to adopt the most idealistic, anti-materialist lines just because it "feels right."

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 28 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My favorite was Ben Shapiro saying "Mao took away everyone's guns," and reactionaries started parroting this, which was the complete opposite of what happened. Mao was like "Here have some guns. I'm not gonna tell you what you should do, but also it'd be a real shame if some landlords tried to collect rent from their tenants."

They'll claim he killed 60 million people, but then not explain how. Hint: revolutionaries went around shooting anyone they didn't like after communists won the civil war.

I was in that same thread shooting the shit. They didn't know we shoot to kill!

Honestly, I was just trying to get banned from their instance so I didn't have to see their garbage anymore. This is some of the best and funniest news I've heard on here in a long while

But I thought they wanted to be on a free speech instance?

[–] procapra@lemm.ee 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Im not really sure what instance to switch to. Lemmy.zip maybe? I just want to be able to interact with as many people as possible (until I'm banned or blocked ofc).

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago

I think lemmy.sdf.org or simply lemmy.ml are probably the best bets.
