The features of an effective American war (proxy or otherwise) is that it is a) against opponents with much less military power than you; b) with very low American losses; c) with victories you can visibly show off from time to time to justify involvement, and d) with a profit margin beyond merely giving money to military corporations. The war against Yemen was none of those; airplanes tumbled off aircraft carriers, and the navy complained of the hardest fighting conditions in decades. Conquering Yemen for its resources was inconceivable given the terrain, lack of good intelligence, and the strength of Ansarallah, and all that seemed to be visibly harmed were empty patches of desert and civilians.

Apparently, the ceasefire last month merely stipulated that they stop attacking merchant vessels in the Red Sea; it said nothing about attacking Israel. Therefore, Yemen is absolutely free to create a new blockade of Israel by just striking their airports and seaports, and all Israel can seem to do is try and bomb them in retaliation, a futile strategy which has failed to produce a military or political change in Yemen for the last decade when many other countries have tried it. And if America directly attacks them in response to attacks on Israel, the ceasefire is off, and expensive equipment will continue to be lost.

Across the strait from Yemen is an interesting array of countries. Egypt's position in this war is well-known, and Somalia is under a kind of US occupation under the guise of fighting terrorism (Trump withdrew most troops, but they were then sent back under Biden). The other three are Sudan, Djibouti, and Eritrea. All three are increasingly being drawn into the anti-imperialist camp, as they cooperate with Iran, Russia, and/or China. Sudan is undergoing a civil war, but the rebels fighting the government are famously backed by the UAE. Djibouti has refused to allow themselves to be a launchpad for US strikes on Yemen.

Eritrea has a fascinating history of flip-flopping between West and East over the past few decades, but has, since 2020, sided with the East. It was one of the five countries to oppose the 2022 UN resolution condemning Russia's war with Ukraine. Eritrea sends two thirds of its exports to China, and Iran has reportedly supplied them with military equipment. If a stronger link could be reforged, then Iran would have significantly less trouble sending military technology to Ansarallah, and to other friendly groups throughout the region.

Naturally, the lidless eye of the imperial core is shifting its gaze onto Eritrea. Meanwhile, Ethiopia - a country that has experienced frequent conflict with Eritrea - is part of BRICS+ and their economy is increasingly reliant on China (as is most countries' economies nowadays). If a permanent resolution between the two could be created, it would be a victory for themselves and the Resistance, and a defeat for America, which thrives on conflict and destabilization.

Israel raises record $5bn in bond sales to US investors as Gaza genocide strains economy

Israel has raised a record $5 billion through Israel Bonds, a US-based broker-dealer, to help finance its ongoing war on Palestinians in Gaza, marking a surge in foreign support for the country’s economy despite mounting concerns over domestic fiscal sustainability.

Since the start of the war, Israel has spent some $67 billion to destroy Gaza and slaughter some 110,000 Palestinians, an estimated 80 percent civilians. US taxpayers provided Israel with nearly $18 billion in military aid during the first year of the war alone, according to the Costs of War Project at Brown University.

Israel’s war-related spending has ballooned, leading to a record government borrowing of nearly $76 billion last year. While most of Israel’s debt is raised in the local bond market, international placements and Israel Bonds play a vital supplementary role. US states such as New York, Texas, Ohio, and Florida, particularly Palm Beach County, its largest single investor at $700 million, are among the most prominent backers.

But even as capital flows in, experts have warned about the war’s long-term economic toll. Karnit Flug, a former Governor of the Bank of Israel and a senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute, stated this week that increased war spending threatens to collapse essential public services, including hospitals, schools, and public transportation. Speaking ahead of the Eli Hurvitz Conference on Economy and Society, Flug cautioned that the current path is unsustainable. “Without changes in the government’s course of budget policy and without internalizing the potential snowball effect of sanctions and restrictions, Israel will find itself on a very risky path,” she said.

As taxes rise and public services deteriorate, she warned that the burden is falling disproportionately on high-productivity, tax-paying Israelis—many of whom are the most mobile and capable of leaving the country. Flug urged the government to reassess its budget priorities and reduce dependence on wartime borrowing, citing Israel’s heavy reliance on human capital and infrastructure for future growth.

Netanyahu’s ultra-Orthodox partners move ahead with Knesset dissolution plan

Ultra-Orthodox (Haredim) Israeli parties in Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition said on 6 June that they are moving forward with an effort to dissolve the Knesset over the government’s failure to pass a law exempting members of the Haredi community from military service.

On Thursday, Israel’s Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara announced that the army will issue over 50,000 conscription orders to ultra-Orthodox students next month, further fueling outrage across the Haredi community. The attorney general said the matter of drafting ultra-Orthodox into the army “is not progressing sufficiently, as the army urgently needs new recruits, which requires imposing personal sanctions on draft evaders,” according to Israel’s Broadcasting Corporation (KAN).

Ultra-Orthodox Israeli Jews of military age have been able to avoid compulsory enlistment into the army for decades by enrolling in yeshivas (religious schools) and obtaining repeated one-year service deferrals until they reach the age of military exemption. Since the war in Gaza began, a manpower crisis plaguing the army has compelled the government to move forward with drafting the ultra-Orthodox into military service – to the chagrin of the far-right, religious parties in the prime minister’s ruling coalition.

Also interesting is this:

Iran orders Chinese materials for 'hundreds of ballistic missiles': Report

Iran has reportedly ordered thousands of tons of ingredients necessary for the development of ballistic missiles from China, sources cited by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on 5 June claimed. The sources said Tehran plans to beef up its military arsenal as it engages in nuclear talks with Washington. “Shipments of ammonium perchlorate are expected to reach Iran in the coming months and could fuel hundreds of ballistic missiles … Some of the material would likely be sent to militias in the region aligned with Iran, including Houthis in Yemen,” they added.

Iranian ships docked in China earlier this year were reportedly loaded with over 1,000 tons of sodium perchlorate, needed for the propellant in ballistic missiles. An official cited by WSJ said, “the new, larger contract for ammonium perchlorate could be enough for Iran to produce 800 missiles.”

Last month, the US imposed sanctions on Chinese firms it said were aiding the Iranian ballistic missile program. “Iran remains heavily reliant on China to conduct its malign activities [in the region],” the US State Department said in a statement.

Earlier I asked whether China was more of a help to Israel or Iran, and this is definitely a point in the Iran column. I'd imagined China's help towards the Resistance is more covert, so it's hard to tally up.

The US has been publicly insisting that Iran will not be allowed to enrich uranium in any agreement. Iran has rejected the US demand and says it will continue enrichment with or without a deal.

I haven't been keeping up with the nuclear talks that much; it's an interesting display of confidence and strength compared to the Iran of a decade ago, especially given that Iran's current government is a little more willing to talk with the West than before. Israel and the US are clearly doing a coordinated good-cop-bad-cop routine; "Hey, now, you better accept the deal or my partner... well, he's an angry guy, I can't control him that well, who knows what will happen to you..." and Iran seems fairly confident that they can resist this despite Israel's belligerency.

After Hezbollah did not unleash their enormous missile arsenals, I won't confidently state anymore that if Israel doesn't make peace with Iranian enrichment then Israel is fucked (perhaps the president will be like "Hm, yes, we must try and reach a comprehensive peace deal here..." after thousands of civilians are murdered by Israel, like the Lebanese government did) but if Iran does choose to do True Promise 3 and beyond, then that would be devastating for Israel and the US generally.

Once Hezbollah is back in action and able to apply pressure onto northern Israel again (hopefully sooner rather than later), combined with Ansarallah's constant pressure on Israel, we might really be getting somewhere.

Bit late, but did ya hear that the modern Ukrainian nazi government was mad at Poland for publically remembering how their people were genocided by ww2 Ukrainian nazis? They decided to say no Ukrainians did a genocide against their silly Polish neighbors and the Ukrainian national heroes that are celebrated by the Ukrainian government has had their honor tarnished by the Perfidious Polish Sejm, and that the Poles need to remember the true enemy - who didn't genocide them with impunity for their nazi German masters - the Russians

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine considers the decision of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland to establish 11 July as a Day of Remembrance for the victims of the so-called “genocide committed by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic” to fly in the face of the spirit of good neighbourly relations between Ukraine and Poland.

Such unilateral steps do not contribute to achieving mutual understanding and reconciliation, which our countries have been working on for a long time, particularly in the format of the Joint Ukrainian-Polish Working Group on Historical Issues, which operates with the participation of the ministries of culture and national memory institutions from both countries.

Ukraine consistently advocates for a scientific and unbiased study of the complex pages of our shared history. We are convinced that the path to true reconciliation lies through dialogue, mutual respect and joint work by historians, rather than through unilateral political assessments.

We urge the Polish side to refrain from steps that could lead to increased tension in bilateral relations and undermine the achievements gained through constructive dialogue and cooperation between Ukraine and Poland.

Despite the bias and political context of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland's decision, we continue to conduct search and exhumation work in Ukraine and Poland, respectively. We have already achieved practical results in this area, which should be developed further in the future.

Once again, we remind you that Poles should not look for enemies among Ukrainians, and Ukrainians should not look for enemies among Poles. We have a common enemy – Russia.

For the sake of the common strength, freedom and security of our two friendly countries, we must resolve problematic issues together, rather than exacerbating them.

ABC: Zelenskyy says Russian drivers 'didn't know anything' about role in audacious drone attack

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Russian truck drivers who transported what would become platforms for Ukraine's large-scale surprise drone attack on Russian warplanes a week ago did so unwittingly.

Literally caught in 4K admitting to a cut-and-dry war crime on US national TV. He didn't even leave any wiggle room for himself.

And of course, Western media is jerking him off for violating the Geneva Convention.

[–] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 5 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

How does that happen? Like do truck drivers not take 1 look in the trunk to see what they're carrying?

[–] companero@hexbear.net 9 points 2 hours ago

The drones were hidden in false roofs.

[–] PosadistInevitablity@hexbear.net 5 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

They appeared to be cabinets and furniture. Then a false panel opened up to release the drones.

It would have been very unlikely for them to inspect basic cargo so closely.

Western press has been talking about how big of an L this is for Russia. True, it's very embarrassing. However, it doesn't change the fact that Russia still controls 20% of Ukrainian territory.

That is not the case with India-Pakistan "war", where India lost multiple fighter jets and gained nothing.

[–] qcop@hexbear.net 14 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

I am not that familiar with the Geneva convention what is the war crime and violation of the convention here? Using unwitting truck drivers ?

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 30 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Using unmarked civilian vehicles for military purposes is a violation, because it encourages the targeting of uninvolved civilians. Even if the drivers were aware or were military personnel it would be a violation, but this is essentially using civilian human shields without their knowledge.

It is prohibited to kill, injure or capture an adversary by resort to perfidy. Acts inviting the confidence of an adversary to lead him to believe that he is entitled to, or is obliged to accord, protection under the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict, with intent to betray that confidence, shall constitute perfidy. The following acts are examples of perfidy:

  • The feigning of an intent to negotiate under a flag of truce or of a surrender;
  • The feigning of an incapacitation by wounds or sickness;
  • The feigning of civilian, non-combatant status; and
  • The feigning of protected status by the use of signs, emblems or uniforms of the United Nations or of neutral or other States not Parties to the conflict.

https://www.ohchr.org/en/instruments-mechanisms/instruments/protocol-additional-geneva-conventions-12-august-1949-and (Article 37)

Ukraine invited the confidence of Russia to accord protection to the civilian drivers, with the intent to betray that confidence. I guess if you wanted to do mental gymnastics, you could say that Ukraine didn't kill, injure, or capture anyone, but the attacks were big enough that I'm sure Russia could find someone who was "injured".

If you are just tuning in, wide ranging immigration raids in Los Angeles yesterday faced backlash from dozens of protestors, with police responding with crowd control such as flashbangs and tear gas. A summary and video of the violent arrest of SEIU president David Huerta can be seen here courtesy of Z_Poster365.

Brief clip from AP news showing conflict between cops and the people during the response:

Police and protesters clash outside federal detention center in LA after ICE raids

One thing you can see in this clip is a technique for neutralizing a tear gas grenade at 0:55. A demonstrator puts a traffic cone over the grenade and pours a bottle of water into the top. Several of the police in the shield line are wearing plain-clothes with riot gear over. It's a bit funny to see them jump and get startled by their own flashbang at 0:23+.

The fear that is clearly visible among even the kitted out troops in these clips shows they were likely not expecting such intense resistance from regular people, or they are untrained chuds that can't handle the terror that strikes them when the fantasy of crushing dissent becomes reality and the people massively outnumber you. There are completely average looking people, even elderly, throwing objects and screaming at the goons as they back off. The more these clips come out, the more people are becoming incensed. Even on Reddit comments the majority seem to be aligning with the idea that these nazis need to be stopped.

It was interesting to compare the front pages of a couple major news outlets after what was somewhat intense unrest involving a significant number of people. AP News is probably seen as less biased either right or left by most USians, but their right-wing bias is clear when you compare the major headlines with others. Here's the AP front page when viewed on my PC a minute ago:

Compare to Reuters:

The only full article from AP I could find about the violence had this headline: Federal authorities arrest dozens for immigration violations across Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After federal immigration authorities arrested more than 40 people Friday across Los Angeles, protesters gathered outside a federal detention center demanding their release before police in riot gear tossed tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers executed search warrants at multiple locations, including outside a clothing warehouse where a tense scene unfolded as a crowd tried to block agents from driving away. Sirens blared as protesters surrounded black SUVs and tactical vehicles. Officers threw flash bangs into the street to disperse people as they shouted and filmed the scene with their cell phones. One demonstrator tried to physically stop a vehicle from leaving.

"One demonstrator tried to physically stop a vehicle", what happened after that? They were partially ran over, as well as a bicycle and nearly it's rider while the ICE vehicle escaped, that wasn't relevant information according to AP. I haven't found any update on their condition, but from what I could tell on the helicopter footage before they quickly cut away they were being helped up by others so it didn't appear they were severely or gravely injured.

Forty-four people were arrested on immigration violations across multiple locations, said Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe, a spokesperson for Homeland Security Investigations. The president of SEIU California, a major labor union, was arrested and charged for impeding a federal agent while protesting, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.

Can't bother mentioning a labor leaders name I suppose (David Huerta), or the fact that he was injured and sent to the hospital from the arrest. They don't mention that the charges will most likely be dropped because he was not actually impeding anyone and was acting as an observer, but I suppose that would be editorializing anyway.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the activity was meant to “sow terror” in the nation’s second-largest city.

The video coverage from Reuters is a decent summary, they even have a close up on the face and visible name of one of the nazis named "Bruner". The AP videos had no commentary and made sure to obscure the police actions, but had some clear clips of protesters faces and actions. Reuters seemed to avoid filming faces of those protesting, purposely filming from a low angle.

Reuters: Riot police, anti-ICE protesters square off in Los Angeles after raids

LOS ANGELES, June 6 (Reuters) - Helmeted police in riot gear turned out on Friday evening in a tense confrontation with protesters in downtown Los Angeles, after a day of federal immigration raids in which dozens of people across the city were reported to be taken into custody.

Live Reuters video showed Los Angeles Police Department officers lined up on a downtown street wielding batons and what appeared to be tear gas rifles, facing off with demonstrators after authorities had ordered crowds of protesters to disperse around nightfall.

Early in the standoff, some protesters hurled chunks of broken concrete toward officers, and police responded by firing volleys of tear gas and pepper spray. Police also fired "flash-bang" concussion rounds. It was not clear whether there were any immediate arrests.

An LAPD spokesperson, Drake Madison, told Reuters that police on the scene had declared an unlawful assembly, meaning that those who failed to leave the area were subject to arrest. Television news footage earlier in the day showed caravans of unmarked military-style vehicles and vans loaded with uniformed federal agents streaming through Los Angeles streets as part of the immigration enforcement operation.

Thnaks for writing this up. I was hoping someone would mention it in this thread or the news comm. It's. A huge signal of escalating revolutionary tensions/conditions imo. I had 2020 vibes seeing some of these pictures and videos.

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 4 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

That's precisely why I did, I don't normally but I was getting impatient waiting for someone to post about it haha. But yes I haven't seen this sort of impromptu escalation since 2020, and I can't imagine it's going to slow down soon, especially in LA. A reporter from NBC said there were an estimated one million undocumented people living or working in LA county. If the government is serious about their crackdown I could see a sustained campaign in some cities.

❗️Iran obtains massive trove of highly sensitive Israeli documents —

Iran’s intelligence agencies have acquired a large cache of highly sensitive and strategic documents from the Israeli regime, including thousands of files pertaining to its nuclear infrastructure and plans.

According to sources cited by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the breach marks one of the most significant setbacks for Israel.

The sources explained that while the operation to secure the documents was carried out some time ago, the extensive volume of material and the need to ensure its secure transfer into Iran required a period of complete secrecy.

They added that the sheer quantity of documents, along with accompanying photos and videos, has required a considerable amount of time to review and analyze.
