At the end of the day, no matter how progressive, Catholic is still Catholic. Society will have to drag them into the future on this issue rather than the other way around.

Every time there's a new Pope we basically just cross our fingers that they're kind of, sort of decent people on some topics so that maybe some of their fanatical followers will be kind of, sort of decent people on some topics.
