The Poor People's Campaign was a march on Washington D.C. to gain economic justice for poor people in the United States that began on this day in 1968, just one month after the assassination of one of its key organizers, MLK Jr.

The protest was also organized by Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and carried out under the leadership of Ralph Abernathy in the wake of King's assassination.

After presenting an organized set of demands to Congress and executive agencies, participants set up a 3,000-person protest camp on the Washington Mall, where they stayed for six weeks in the spring of 1968.

Among those demands was a proposal for an "economic bill of rights" that included a commitment to full employment, a guaranteed annual income measure, and more low-income housing for poor Americans of all races.

"I think it is necessary for us to realize that we have moved from the era of civil rights to the era of human rights…

When we see that there must be a radical redistribution of economic and political power, then we see that for the last twelve years we have been in a reform movement…

That after Selma and the Voting Rights Bill, we moved into a new era, which must be an era of revolution…"

-MLK Jr., in a 1967 planning meeting

Are they randomly adding "talk about white genocide in south Africa" to the prompts?

[–] Blockocheese@hexbear.net 3 points 20 minutes ago

Yeah, elon wanted the AI to talk about "white genocide" in South Africa but fucked it up so it just keeps mentioning it

Andor spoilers, relationship violence,

Okay so everyone made a big deal about that scene in Andor where Syril abuses Deedra, but like... she is killing a planet and gaslighting him, and he chokes her. I don't want to minimize relationship violence, but she has a body count larger than Hitler at this point and she has been lying to him for their entire relationship and she orders his arrest and firing upon a crowd she knows he's in. How the hell is the shocking bit his choking. Obviously that's bad, but he just found out she ordered genocide. Maybe I'm not neurotypical enough for this, but I think people are doing that thing where we act like direct acts that violate social norms are in a totally different and worse category than objectively more harmful acts that fit within societal norms and expectations.

Its kinda cool that the villain in Sinners is spurring these conversations about forced assimilation / colonization to happen.

Sinners spoilers

when a person becomes a vampire they are cut off from their ancestors / descendants, so people are saying its unfair and cruel that Remmick never gets to reconnect. I get to explain how that tragedy reflects the reality of assimilation into whiteness / patriarchy, and via fanonian theory -- replicates that violence upon others.

I think people relate to his emptiness, they see themselves reflected. They want him to be reunited, and I hope that desire fuels them to do it themselves.

"Lol, we don't really read resumes. Never your's especially! It's just toooo hard!"

Oh my God, can corpos stop pretending their gross and utter incompetence is cute and quirky? Gen Z can't start their lives because we're all forced to wait in line for porky to eventually decide to get off his lazy butt and maybe consider hiring.

I wish people would stop thinking I'm flirting with them when I'm just being polite

I'm flattered, but I don't date owls.

I get the exact opposite! I'm really bad at eye contact with strangers, so a lot of times I think I come off as a creepo. But I just want to tell people their shoes are cool or whatever. Guaranteed I would rather be on this side of this type of interaction though, unwanted advances are so uncomfortable

How do people feel about Constantine? Specifically the 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves, that is. My understanding is that critics at the time didn't like it, but I'm a big fan. I will admit I've never read the comics, nor have I ever watched the Constantine TV show or The Sandman. But on its own merits I think it's a very strong performance from Reeves - or at the very least it's a role well-suited to him - and an underrated gem of his career.

A+ Caesar, instrumental in creating the meritocratic bureaucracy of the Dominate.

Bit idea: Making the removal of PFAS and PFOA forever chemicals woke, and convincing conspiracy brained people to drink airport firefighting foam as a cure-all. The deep state doesn't want you to know that replacing all your fatty tissues with organic flourine is the one true way to become the anti-woke warrior.

Do not actually do this.

Sabrina Carpenter’s aunt is apparently Nancy Cartwright. Does this mean Sabrina is also a member of Scientology?

many criticisms are made against Friends, and most of them are valid, but in my opinion the greatest sin by far was acting like paleontology isn't interesting as fuck

[–] fox@hexbear.net 1 points 18 minutes ago

Ross gets laid by doing an after-hours tour of the museum. If paleontology is presented as boring it's because Ross is boring

Need him back on screen post-Empire where he just goes "back in the good old days" yapping to passengers. Most realistic/grounded character in Star War.

[–] Spudposting@hexbear.net 6 points 7 hours ago

When an account you hate finishes to completion all over your jacket potato

[–] Goblinmancer@hexbear.net 8 points 8 hours ago

I hope the Superman movie randomly have real world geopolitics like that time Superman mentions kashmir which got people mad.

I love how the Penguin implies Taiwan has sucessfuly reunited itself into China.

[–] HarryLime@hexbear.net 5 points 8 hours ago

[–] Cimbazarov@hexbear.net 9 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

In the new Superman trailer, Superman is getting interviewed and the interviewer is like "sure you stopped a war, but did you ever stop and think that it was illegal for you to enter that country" smuglord

Feels like it's critiquing libs but from the fascist point of view. I haven't watched any new superhero slop since the batman and looks like that shall continue

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 8 points 10 hours ago

I think its just lois lane giving him a hard time so he would be ready for the US gov people angry at him. I feel the trailer was showing him on the right but the world is against him

But i could be wrong, it wouldnt be the first time superman gets used to push reactionary propaganda

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 7 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 1 points 33 minutes ago

It's mostly plastic and ceramic bowls and plates in there, plus cutlery, I've got small drinking glasses and I usually just use them for water, or coffee and tea when there are no mugs free. So, I don't really notice/mind that things go streaky. If it was full of things like larger glass tumblers or wine glasses I'd probably use the rinse aid tho

Having my cake and eating it too, what a dumbfuck saying what else am I gonna do with this cake?

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 12 hours ago

Companies are actually making more money off piracy than ever before cause you used to be able to rent a shitload of movies, rip em and upload them. Now people need to buy them

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 5 points 10 hours ago

It is scary when I don't see my friends for so long, they just stop existing and nonexistence is something my brain can't wrap itself around. Hope they are ok in the void

[–] WizardOfLoneliness@hexbear.net 10 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

they were gonna do 5 seasons of Andor but they "realized the time commitment of filming each season" which translated means: Diego Luna didn't wanna work on this shit for much longer

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 8 points 12 hours ago (6 children)

That is quite the commitment. I think if this season had been split into 2 seasons then a lot of the issues I had would resolve themselves just by having more breathing room. Wouldn't fix the last scene though. Bix deserved better.
