Isn't this stupid won't you loose your health care?

[–] Ulrich_the_Old@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

The only USA tourist attraction I am interested in is trump's grave.

There are bomb craters in Ukraine more inviting than the US.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago

HARD PASS ♾️

[–] MyMotherIsAHamster@lemmy.ca 16 points 2 days ago

Wow, I can stay longer in a fascist shithole ruled by a narcissistic rapist and his Christo-fascist puppet masters? Yeah........no.

[–] IronKrill@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

I'm sure they'd be happy to let me stay longer as long as I'm rotting in a prison while providing slave labour

[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

Any dollar they get from me can be used to enslave us.

I know it's not possible to fully detach but I'm going to avoid it as much as I can.

[–] caffinatedone@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Wow, coming up with dumb solutions to self-inflicted problems. Woo.

Maybe just impeach and remove the problem instead?

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Yeah no thanks. Im of Latino, indigenous heritage. The moment i cross, they’ll look in my phone, see the anti trump posts, look at my tattoos and it’s off to a Central American gulag for me, and I’m not even joking

[–] LordPassionFruit@lemm.ee 5 points 2 days ago

My partner is American (we're working on that), so I need to cross to visit them. I'm the most "works and office job and doesn't do much else" looking person you can imagine. I've been asked when the last time I was arrested was, how much drugs do I really have in the car when I said none the first time they asked, had them check my trunk and back seats because I handed them my passport funny, and almost been denied entry because I had a dress suit in my back seat.

I would never risk crossing if I wasn't a white male at this point.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago
[–] BlackSheep@lemmy.ca 20 points 2 days ago

As a Canadian woman, I feel unsafe crossing the border.

[–] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 9 points 2 days ago

Lmao. Desperate fucks.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 6 points 1 day ago

Nice is that would be, you don't want to do it under the Trump shitministration. Those bastards old deport anybody for any reason, up to and including American citizens now. Granted they're really scraping the edge on that one, but it won't be long before they try to really push it.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago
[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 days ago

Do they actually think minor inconveniences like visa length are what's stopping us from visiting? Fuck, that shit hole country really is full of idiots.

[–] walktheplank@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

I haven't been since bush Jr. My wife hasn't been since she was a little girl. My kids have never been. We won't be starting any time soon or likely ever again. They couldn't pay us to go. Not to mention our lucky 13 tattoos.

[–] asg101@lemmy.ca 32 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Any Canadian traveling to the Fourth Reich for anything other than life-saving reasons is a traitor.

"We don't need anything from Canada"

Proceeds to table bill to get our sweet, sweet tourism dollars

[–] brax@sh.itjust.works 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"We don't need anything from Canada, but boy do we want them as a state"

Hmmmmm

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago

And we want their tourism

🤡🖕🇺🇸

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 75 points 3 days ago

Doesn’t matter if you won’t set foot in the US anymore.

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

That's the strangest way yet to say, "Trump wants to make Canada 51st state."

[–] Sixtyforce@sh.itjust.works 30 points 3 days ago

I'm never ever going to the USA willingly ever again unless we're invaded by them.

[–] SirMaple__@lemmy.ca 56 points 3 days ago

Don't go. It's a trap!

You couldn't pay me to ever step foot in that country again.

[–] InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works 58 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I expect brown Canadians and LGTBQ+ Canadians to still be at risk of some ICE shenanigans, so fuck it anyway.
May the snowbird tourism industry fucking burn, they might as well spend their money somewhere that isn't hostile to our sovereignty.

[–] shittydwarf@sh.itjust.works 38 points 3 days ago

I would wager any Canadians against nazism to be at risk also, better to avoid the US altogether

No, thank you.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 39 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The issue that is keeping Canadians away is not how long we can stay in the US visa free. It's the Trump administration and all the Republicans in Congress that haven't done a single thing to even try to keep Trump in check.

[–] gmalette@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 days ago

And the risk of an involuntary one-way trip to El Salvadore for my social media account content

[–] aushtan@lemm.ee 43 points 3 days ago

Ayo fuck that. Abuser tactics coming from that dumpster fire down south

[–] thefool@sh.itjust.works 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If Ontario residents stay 7 months, they lose their health care.

"To qualify for Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) coverage, a person must be a resident of Ontario as defined in Regulation 552 of the Health Insurance Act (HIA). Except for those residents identified in section 1.1(1)(a) below, a resident must ordinarily be present in Ontario which means the resident must make his or her permanent and principal home in Ontario and, with some exceptions, be present in Ontario for 153 days in any given 12-month period."

Not that this bill would convince me to ever cross the border again

[–] BlackSheep@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And yet, Albertans want to join the US? Do they think they’re going to retain their health care, maternity leave, etc.??? Are they just stupid?

[–] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 4 points 2 days ago

Albertan health care is actively being Americanized. Heard of Covenant Health?

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Do they know we're mostly from India?

[–] 5PACEBAR@lemmy.world 42 points 3 days ago

Like I'd want to visit this shithole

[–] owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 28 points 3 days ago

Might be safer to get in the windowless van with the guy promising candy.

[–] jhymesba@lemmy.world 30 points 3 days ago (3 children)

American coming in peace.

I like all of your comments. We've fucked around and we're starting to find out and are becoming desperate.

These Republicans who are trying to woo you back should be putting their weight behind impeaching the Orange Menace.

Until the shitgibbon is gone, spend your tourism dollars elsewhere, and let us keep begging.

I really wish I could join you guys and trade my American citizenship for Canadian citizenship.

Elbows up. You got this.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Thanks. But even after orange shitler is gone, in another four years after that there will be some other nutjob Republican voted in who will continue to extend the trump project of corrupt rule by total chaos. But they will be younger, and maybe smarter, so even more dangerous. The US is dead to me and dead forever to a huge majority of Canadians. The 51st state rhetoric, Canada doesn’t exist, arbitrary border, has socialized healthcare only because Canada doesn’t spend enough on its military, free trade bait and switch, stack the federal Govt with incompetent morons on purpose, taken altogether - did it. The US has crossed not one but hundreds of red lines. We. Are. Done.

[–] jhymesba@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Not gonna lie. I'm disappointed. But this isn't a you problem. It's a we problem, or a US problem. Trump isn't the problem. We are the problem. And I don't know how we can fix that. How do you fix stupid?

[–] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Two thoughts.

Most Canadians view changing your administration as a collective responsibility of all US citizens. Kind thoughts are appreciated but most of us are increasingly impatient.

Second, have you considered that, like many other Americans, you may be a Canadian by descent? And if so, any children you may have also?

At present, due to a 2023 Superior Court Bjorkquist decision on Lost Canadians in Ontario (unchallenged by the federal government), there is an exceptional situation where people born outside Canada who are descendants of people born in Canada can apply to claim citizenship.

See this page - the flag at the top gives the latest extension of the interim provisions (that override the existing law that the Court stayed).

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/become-canadian-citizen/eligibility/already-citizen.html

While I wouldn’t normally direct anyone to Reddit, the CanadianCitizenship subreddit has a lot of information on people’s experiences in navigating the process.

See the FAQ at https://www.reddit.com/r/Canadiancitizenship/s/rHN4JVQwQO

Very interesting. I'll have to look. My mom was the genealogist of our family, so she has some great records. As far as I'm aware, none of my ancestors are Canadian, but it seems that this site is saying to dig deeply into both my wife's and my family history and look for any indications someone might have had a Canadian background? I'll look, but even if it doesn't apply to me, maybe it can get some other good people out of this rapidly worsening country.

I'm thinking even if this doesn't help me, it'll potentially help others!

Until things get sorted out in the US, its not safe for immigrants

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago

It’s not safe for brown people, people of colour, Black folks, trans and LGBTQ folks.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago
[–] Grant_M@lemmy.ca 17 points 3 days ago

That would only offer more time and opportunity for the ICE gestapo to find and imprison Canadians.
