Independently verify doesn't mean "calling the party that made the initial claim".

It means finding other verifiable sources.

And in this case, it's going to be really hard to do that as Israel doesn't allow journalists unsupervised access to Gaza, which more responsible news outlets mention when they say they can't independently verify claims.

Also false. There is satellite footage of the ambulances surrounded by Israeli troops and UN video of the bodies being dug up.

These "news" outlets also do not mention they "cannot independently verify claims" when they are putting IDF quotes in their headlines

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 27 points 1 day ago

That's a totally fair criticism.

Like say...

The UN who made the claim?

[–] bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

“the Palestine Red Crescent Society said”. Where do you get the UN from?

I'm tired of people that read stuff like this and assume the journalist is trying to discredit the source. This is journalism 101. Do not explicitly claim anything to be true unless you personally can independently and reliably demonstrate it. Its just to cover your ass so you can't get sued.

If they wanted to give Israel better press, they very easily could have just not reported on this in the first place.

Unless they are quoting Israel in which case NYT will gladly make up lies and repeat any unverified allegation made by Israel without disclaimers going as far as putting it in their headlines.

Well next time you should post that, it would be much more scandalous.

Those posts have been made many times.

Even TheOnion has dunked on NYT for their disinformation campaign:

‘New York Times’ Invents Entirely New Numerical System To Avoid Reporting Gazan Death Toll

[–] sanpedropeddler@sh.itjust.works 3 points 14 hours ago

That's worse than I expected, thanks for providing examples.

nice delivery. i agree with the above poster, id rather see this numerous times than the post we're commenting on

Some commenters like to point out that journalism practices support the narrative that the NYT is not reflecting - whether directly or indirectly - any particular point of view. This could not be independently confirmed. When reached for comment the entire corporate structure of the New York Times refused comment.
