Alaa Tannous was pleased when the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) ordered Air Canada to pay him $2,079 for delayed luggage, following a flight he and wife, Nancy, took from Toronto to Vancouver in 2022.

"I felt it's fair," said Tannous, who had waited more than two years for the CTA's decision.

But instead of receiving a payout from Air Canada, the airline served him with court documents this past December — on Christmas Eve. Air Canada is taking Tannous to Federal Court in an attempt to overturn the CTA's decision.

The CTA, Canada's transport regulator, isn't named in the court case, so Tannous is on his own.

Why would they not be going after the CTA for their ruling and instead targeting the original victim?

Seems kinda dumb

Because the CTA ruled in their favour but lacked the means to force the airline to obey their ruling.

I hate airline delays as much and anyone, but "$2,079 to cover toiletries, make-up and clothing he and his wife purchased after landing in Vancouver without the one suitcase they had packed for a weekend getaway" - really?

About a thousand each. If they'd made reservations for an expensive evening out, and had to replace their outfits for that down to the dress shoes, plus another change of clothes or two, plus the minor stuff, the number maybe isn't all that crazy.

Not to mention the time that you need to take out of your vacation to go shopping to replace those items. They were only there for a weekend so that would've been a pretty big chunk of it.

Yeah. And that means there wouldn't have been much opportunity to comparison shop or look for sales—they'd have been buying the first acceptable option they found, at full price.

Actually not that bad. I went to Europe for a wedding and they lost my luggage for 8 out of the 10 days. I raked up a conservative 700 Euros for make up, dress and shoes. It’s pricey there and I didn’t even get close to high end!
