This stick of ram has been my emotional support stick of ram for almost a decade. It's traveled with me around the world, and been in my backpack through tough times.
Since it's so old and only 4GB, i can't really use it or sell it, which is why i turned it into a knife. It's surprisingly sharp, and short enough that the airlines in my country allow it in carry-on and checked luggage, so it can still be my travel companion

Weirdly, thanks for the inspiration…

I have a couple of 250mb ram sticks laying around, very old I know, they were kind of fun dangly decorations in my old place but my partner does not like the look. I hate throwing things away as it feels wasteful, so I’ll be attempting to carve a knife out of them.

Good luck with your project :3

[–] Corno@lemm.ee 36 points 1 day ago

Old and only 4 GB? This looks cutting edge.

[–] MITM0@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

So this is what the kids mean by cyberwarfare!

I though of a really bad skit for this.

(mafia boss in a dark room with a man) Mafia boss--"now, now ronny tell me were the money is

Ronny--"i dont remember!"

mafia boss--"i have a friend who helps people remember random memorys, BRING OUT THE MEMORY JOGGER!"

On a less shitposty note, thats knife is fucking sick bro. Looks like a cyberpunk weapon.

You are going to lose your cush job in the prison library bro

[–] phorq@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, but he's gonna get a job in the prison computer lab to die for

You mean Rat.

[–] pelya@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (4 children)

The hardwaregoriest thing I saw in person was Intel 486 chip with a hole on a keychain, with legs sawed off. RAM shank is way more classy.

I dunno if it's gorier but I keep a Ryzen 5 3600 on my desk as a fidget toy.

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You have a real gift for framing.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm still putting in work with one of these bad boys. Best 80 bucks ever

[–] CidVicious@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I recently upgraded to a 5800x3d which is pretty killer for gaming. AM4 is a very nice platform. I didn't scrap this cpu on purpose, it just kinda stuck to the heatsink and I accidentally sent it flying when I detached it. 💀

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I've been slowly but surely upgrading, I was rocking rocking a stock cooler, and a 1050ti for a minute, finally got a good card and a new PSU/cooler, working my way towards the am5 board and one of those 3d cpus, and I'm going to use this current equipment as a home server. Been trying to get it done on sbcs, and it just always had minor quirks in performance I was never happy with. Hoping this will do the trick

[–] pelya@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Eh, it has no moving parts, unless you break off some.

[–] Earflap@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago

They're very satisfying to spin.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I did the same with a 386 back in the day. Drilling that bastard was remarkably difficult.

A buddy of mine converted the fan and part of the heatsink from a Radeon 9800 Pro, at one point the fastest consumer GPU on the planet, to a hippie daisy decoration for his little dragon statue on his desk to hold.

I don't know what he did with the rest of the card.

[–] bisby@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have 2 AMD k6 300mhz chips. I tried to do that to one of them and never was able to get it finished. They are both just sitting in a bag in the back of a drawer somewhere so it's not like it mattered either way

[–] pelya@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Make a pair of earrings from them!

[–] Sparky@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

I have an Intel i7 7500u laptop cpu, so maybe I should try to make a pendant

I desoldered that cpu from a dead laptop

[–] Deebster@infosec.pub 14 points 1 day ago

What a charming emotional support shiv.

[–] troyunrau@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Any security guard that lets that onto a plane is asking to get fired haha. Report back from your experience :)

[–] Sparky@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I called up the agency that owns all airports and oversees airline rules in my country, and I asked about about my ram knife. They said something in the lines of "if the blade is no longer than 6cm, then you're good to go". I'd imagine staff can veto this if they see something particularly sketchy, but we'll see :)

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 day ago

but if they decide you can't keep it, you have to throw it away :( right?

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

In the (near) post-apocalyptic future I'm gonna stab you with my own memories.

Or laser-disc you from afar.

Or cat–5–whip you like the dirty slut you are.

However I will leave random printed memes on your corpse for the next person trying to pick up some random loot.

With the dot matrix?

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 4 points 1 day ago

Give someone "hard drive shoes" so they can "sleep in the liquid cooling reservoir."

[–] ByteOnBikes@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 day ago

OP, This little knife isn't strong enough for my workload.

I require that you make a "RAM Blade".

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

And here to perform the edge test is Doug Marcaida who will be using the contestant's blade to cut through some pig carcasses.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

I'm pretty sure Doug would've been upset over the missed opportunity for OP to have made a kaRAMbit.

[–] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 10 points 1 day ago

someone is readying themselves for that RTO

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Looks like you're about to shank your fellow inmate.

[–] Sparky@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I'm sure they won't forget that

[–] neatobuilds@lemmy.today 6 points 1 day ago

The memories will come back to them randomly

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Needs some kind of guard so you don't hurt your fingies while stabbing.

[–] Sparky@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I actually didn't think of that. Maybe version 2 will have a finger guard

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 day ago

This is how WW4 will be fought

[–] merari42@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

If killing a ram hungry process is not enough.

Very post apocalyptic
